pairing: CW! Captain Rex x reader
word count: 2k
warnings: fluff, clones being clones, awkward situations, flirting, mild language
Anakin and Fives have seen the way you and the captain look at each other, so they decide to give you both a little nudge in the right direction.
a/n: first time writing about the clones, kinda nervy. I just love the 501st. Also a little bit of a longer fic, so lmk how you guys like it!
When the 501st told Captain Rex to meet them at 79’s at exactly 9pm, he knew something was up.
Not only were his brothers so insistent on the time, but it was odd because they would always arrive together.
So when Fives told him to bring his own speeder, he was a little skeptical.
Packed wall to wall with clones during their breaks in between missions and whatnot.
As soon as Rex walked in, he spotted his brothers at the usual table—but this time, they had a guest.
The only type of girls that went into 79’s were usually there for a fun time with a clone.
Most of them hoping the lucky trooper had some kind of army or bondage related kink.
So seeing a girl that looked so…
Sitting there awkwardly, like she didn’t belong in a place like this—
Yeah. That caught his attention.
“Hey Cap, over here!” Fives called out, practically flagging him down in the middle of the bar.
Rex made his way over, already knowing he was going to regret this.
He was used to Fives’ antics, but he didn’t expect the entire 501st—and Anakin Skywalker—to be in on it this time.
That alone made him cautious.
His eyes flickered back to you.
You sat there, hands folded in your lap for a second before fidgeting with the edge of the table, clearly unsure of what to do with yourself.
“What is a girl like you doing at a clone’s bar?” he found himself thinking.
You, on the other hand, were questioning every life decision that led you to this exact moment.
Because how in the kriff did you end up here?
It all started back in the hangar.
You worked as a mechanic—the head mechanic, to be specific.
You grew up around Anakin, and it was his—and Plo Koon’s—input that got you the job on the main hangar.
Living practically in the hangar itself, you saw clones pass by all the time.
You grew to form friendships with quite a few of them.
Most memorably, Commander Wolffe, Commander Cody…
Which, in hindsight, was probably your first mistake.
The only reason you even agreed to go out tonight was because Fives told you he had a specific friend he wanted you to meet.
Unknowingly to you, Anakin had noticed the way your eyes lingered just a little too long whenever his Captain stopped by.
Fives had heard the way Rex talked about you when he thought no one was paying attention.
How highly he thought of you.
How you were “different.”
They definitely set this up.
Anakin tapped your shoulder as he stood up from his seat beside you.
“Y/n, this is Rex—my Captain and right hand man… but you already knew that.”
Oh you were going to kill him.
You forced a smile anyway.
Meanwhile, you could see Fives and Cody practically shoving Rex forward before quickly joining the rest of the group.
“First round of drinks on me tonight, boys!” Anakin shouted, already walking off.
Then you both looked literally anywhere else.
Rex cleared his throat first.
You mentally slapped yourself.
Rex rubbed the back of his neck, glancing over at the 501st—who were very obviously watching.
They weren’t even trying to hide it.
Fives was leaned forward like this was the most entertaining thing he had ever seen.
Cody had his arms crossed, pretending not to care.
Oh, he looked way too proud of himself.
“Oh, they’re dead,” you muttered.
Rex huffed out a quiet laugh.
“They’ve been dead,” he said. “I just haven’t decided how yet.”
“You didn’t know about this either?”
“I had a feeling something was off, but… not this.”
“Yeah, same. Fives told me I was meeting a ‘friend.’”
A drink suddenly appeared in front of you.
You both looked up to see a clone standing there.
“Courtesy of the boys,” he said, nodding toward the table before walking off.
“Are we being supervised?”
You picked up the glass anyway.
“Well… might as well make them regret it.”
Rex smirked slightly at that.
Conversation started slow.
You talked about the hangar, your work, the chaos of keeping ships running.
Not the polite kind people asked just to fill silence.
“So you basically keep us alive,” he said at one point.
“Someone has to fix your reckless flying.”
He smiled into his drink.
At some point, you forgot they were watching.
“Ten credits says he messes this up.”
Your head snapped toward the 501st.
“Excuse me?” you called out.
“Just saying, Captain’s not exactly smooth.”
“Sit,” you said, grabbing his wrist again.
You let go slower this time.
Fives leaned over to another trooper.
“Oh my—” you groaned, dropping your head into your hand.
“I am so sorry,” Rex muttered.
You looked back up at him.
“They’re kind of entertaining.”
“I’ve seen worse in the hangar.”
That got him to laugh again.
Time passed without you noticing.
But your focus stayed right there.
“You’re different than I expected,” he admitted quietly.
“Oh? And what did you expect?”
“I don’t know,” he said honestly.
The moment things stopped being just a setup.
“I should probably head back,” you said.
The second you stepped outside, the noise of 79’s faded behind you.
“I’m glad they did this,” he said after a moment.
“I didn’t think I would be.”
Relief flickered across his face—subtle, but there.
A loud cheer erupted from inside 79’s.
“They followed us out here?”
Rex pinched the bridge of his nose.
“I’m going to kill them.”
You leaned past him slightly.
A group of clones were pressed up against the window.
“Oh they’re never letting this go,” Rex muttered.
You stepped back slightly.
“Well… goodnight, Captain.”
“Maybe we pick the place.”
A small smile tugged at his lips.
Definitely not part of the plan.
