I tend to use the brushes mentioned like an airbrush, gently creating gradients on my flat colours to try and give what would have been a flat-edged shape more definition when i draw lineless like this, i find texturing this way as i go rather than overlaying an image/grain map afterwards gives me more control!

AWH thanks for the message! i'm really glad i managed to catch this ask. I absolutely adore when people point out their interpretations of this piece and i really truly love this depiction, trying to simplify all of the *hand wavey and vast* imagery and items tied to this series and these two characters is kind of ridiculously hard to do (as i found out trying to make this piece). I'm glad it's been received so well and so warmly over the last year or so, i'd really hoped the simpler style wouldn't take away the idea it still means something to me or could for other fans, and it means a lot when i hear it's been admired all this time c:
