1. partner does not always = boyfriend/girlfriend. some people use it interchangeably with another word, like boyfriend, fiancé, or wife, but some people use it for a specific reason.

2. this is the big one: words like partner and spouse are gender neutral words. unless specified, you do not know the gender of the person it applies to even if pronouns are included. yes, my partner is a cis man, but i do not always say that in posts.

i have a good friend who just got married to a nonbinary person who uses she/her and sometimes they/them pronouns. despite assumptions based on her pronouns, she IS NOT a woman and is NOT comfortable with the term wife.

when my friend says his SPOUSE, there is a specific reason for it, yet as soon as people see it coupled with she/her, they decide he’s married to a woman and that they can interchange that word with “wife.”
