Charles-Henri Sanson: My role as executioner makes an example of those who dare oppose the divine right of the king, and I wonder each night if what I'm doing will ever bring us closer to a world that respects the dignity of life. I started out with such strong ideals of what my purpose was and how I could shape the world around me; by the time I had the power and experience to act on those values, my hair had already greyed and my choices had all been made for me.
