Hello! My partner and I started our game company and our first board game is due to release this November. I believe I found my calling. How do you get money from potential investors so you can develop more games? We got lucky this first game but idk how to go about getting the few thousand I need for our next board game. Do you have experience or advice with this, specifically, for an indie company? Thank you so much in advance! I love your answers and read them all the time
You need to put together a pitch presentation and set up meetings with some publishers or other investors. In the presentation, you need to make sure that you cover all of the major elements of what it is you want from the investor and what it is the investor will get in return for backing you. This basically boils down to answering these four core questions:
What niche does your product fill and what makes it worth filling financially?
How is your product is going to fill that niche?
Why should the investors trust you with their money?
What do the investors get out of it?
In order to answer these questions efficiently, you need to assemble a pitch presentation. The most common elements you want to present are usually:
The one-sentence summary of your pitch (e.g. “Catan with armies!”)
The specific opening you see in the board game market
The target audience and why they are poised to spend money on your new game
How your game is going to meet this audience’s unfilled needs
Your revenue/business model plans
How you plan to take the game to market, including your production schedule
Plans for marketing the game to this audience
Who’s on your team and their specific expertise. Also any existing relationships you have with the necessary partner companies - manufacturing and such for the game board and pieces, etc.
Your current financials and projections for the future
Who your competitors are and their strengths and weaknesses
The cost breakdown for developing, producing, and marketing the game. How much total funding do you need? Do you need it all at once or can it be spread out over a period of weeks/months?
What the investors get out of investing in your company. Equity? Profits? IP ownership?
Anything you want the investors to bring to the table besides funding
I would suggest watching some pitch presentations on youtube and/or the TV show Shark Tank to get an idea for the format. You want your investors to envision the problem and how your solution fixes that problem. Each pitch follows the same format - essentially the same steps as I’ve outlined above. You should also put together handouts for your company - an executive summary of your company, any technical documentation, financial information, market research you’ve done, etc.
Once you’ve assembled a pitch presentation, you can reach out to various publishers and/or investors and arrange for meetings. Most publishers/investors have a point of contact for business inquiries for such reasons, so you can go with that. If you aren’t sure, you can try calling their direct line and asking. You can also try pitching friends or family if you don’t need a large amount of funding, especially if you only need a few thousand to do it. If you’ve got a good presentation, you can also try crowdfunding it. Just keep it clear from the beginning by making sure you answer those four core questions in your presentation. I wish you good luck.
