there has been a lot of talk on the sub about una from the everlasting being so much like brienne. i guess it's understandable that the things people remember most about brienne are her gender non-conformity, and how tall and big she is--and that she's ugly. that's all true. and people tend to recall the heroic aspect but it must imprint more as general badassery idk
to me, nothing about brienne is more memorable than no chance and no choice. it's this pedal to the floor, i will prevent any evil i am able to prevent no matter the cost that runs through her very dna.
brienne has so much clarity about who should be protected and who shouldn't. it's at the very core of her character, even to the point of fault at times. it's wild to me to compare her to a character who doesn't really have it, or who lets it be subsumed because of a desire for love or acceptance. i mean, this understanding of who should be protected is what leads brienne to have soul deep empathy for jaime, to deem him worthy of that protection. but it's also the thing that leads her to agree to sacrifice jaime, the one she loves most in the world, to save an innocent child.
no shade to the everlasting, it was a page turner (dueling second person povs and it works? my hat is off), and i really liked una a lot so i can absolutely understand why she's getting so much reaction. it's the comparison to brienne that has me feeling bristly. more so because i'm just like do we not understand what it is about brienne that makes her an all timer? for me it's so much more than the aesthetic, idk
