Best Night Evarrrrr

Oh my gosh! I just need to nerd out for a little bit! I just spent like four hours with some of the coolest ceramic artists!!!! Julia Galloway, Elaine Olafson Henry, Joe Bova, Anna Calluori Holocombe and Linda Lighton! I learned so much! And just to find out that even though someone is a really world renowned artist, they are just people! Just sweet talkative artsy people! Just like ME!!! So inspiring and supportive, just a great experience! It was also interesting how different the personalities of functional potters vs. sculptural artists are, and what really matters in their lives. (ie money, bragging rights, friendships, being happy, artwork)

Ok, my little happy rant is over, thanks for sticking with me!

P.S. My next couple mugshot mondays are going to be freaking GREAT! So look forward to that. :)

I've had an absolutely fantastic couple of days assisting Julia Galloway set up her instillation of 100 fabulous porcelain bird cups at the The Brinton Museum! Covered in pastels and exhausted but such a great experience! The show 'Flora and Fauna' curated by Elaine Olafson Henry will be open June 15 - September 2. Be sure to stop by if you are in the area, it is definitely worth your time!

Contemporary Ceramic : Japanese Women

Although Japanese women were involved in the Japanese pottery industry for centuries, mainly as decorative artists with their tea wares or performing menial tasks, they were excluded from being in direct contact with the kilns or taking on apprenticeships. Postwar Japan saw more opportunities arise for women in advanced education and they began to enter university art schools and other training facilities both in Japan and overseas. They were exposed to a broader range of creative disciplines and artistic movements and successfully integrated this into their ceramic art and sculptures, while maintaining a connection to the subtle Japanese aesthetic.

From the mid-50′s on they began to establish themselves as independent studio pottery artists. The current generation of female Japanese ceramicists have truly emerged with original and innovative works that seamlessly blend contemporary with traditional styles and techniques and open up new horizons in Japanese art.
