It was an eventful night. Now that Jason had pretty much moved into the forest, full moons were a lot more about companionship than about his happy puppy of a werewolf running around. Yes, his wolf still had a lot of built up energy inside him, but it seemed like now it had made peace with the fact that every so often it would come out and do as it pleased. And there were more important things, anyway. So Chris annoyed the shit out of his alpha, until he gave into some play fight and then convinced him to go out for a hunt. It was always easier to talk in wolf form somehow, and even if Jason didn't open up all that much, he had the feeling the little he did was already a step towards something better.
So it was a successful night, but really draining.
He got home quietly once the sun had come up, unsure if Bas had gone to bed already, and went straight for the shower. A few minutes later, a much more relaxed and cleaner Chris came out, wearing just Sebastian's pajama pants and wiping his damp hair with a towel. "Oh! Bas! Hi! I'm sorry, did I wake you?"
Bas was only hoping Chris hadn’t noticed how distracted and nervous he had been. He had still been trying to figure out the right moment to propose. Tonight it was full moon and even if it was still a little hard, Bas had learned not to worry about Chris being out during those nights, especially now he knew how protective his alfa was so now instead of waiting anxiously for his boyfriend to come back, he tried to relax, lying in bed with a book while his mind keep running with ideas.
He looked up when he heard the front door but soon realized Chris moved quickly to the bathroom for a post run shower, so he put his book away and sat up, waiting for Chris to come into the room. He smiled brightly and patted the matters, “I wasn’t asleep. I was waiting for you,” he said in a sleepy voice, “how was your night?” he asked as he enjoyed the view of Chris wearing his clothes all warm from the shower.
Chris couldn't contain a smile whenever Sebastian smiled at him like that. "You didn't have to wait up, it's really late" he said, a small blush on his cheeks as he moved to the bed, dropping the towel on the chair nearby "Well, or early, it depends how you see it" Chris chuckled, climbing into bed and leaning in to press his lips against Sebastian's right away, like they were magnets. "Hi" he repeated a little above a whisper "It was... a night." he said tiredly, scooting closer to snuggle against him with a happy sigh "I'm glad I'm home." Chris offered with a smile "How about yours?"
Sebastian shrugged, “I don’t care. I’ll always wait up for you,” he assured as he accepted the kiss and reached to cup his boyfriend’s face to make the kiss linger, “welcome home,” he sighed as he let Chris settle comfortably on the bed, raising an arm to wrap it around Chris’ waist to keep him close, “a good one I hope but it doesn’t really sound like it,” he said looking at him carefully to make sure he wasn’t hurt and it looked like he wasn’t, “I’m glad too,” he pressed another kiss on his temple, “it was ok. Nyle wasn’t happy about the new prescriptions food, but the vet said he did need to lose some weight,” he pouted playfully knowing how the husky was upset about his visit to the vet.
Chis blushed when Sebastian welcomed him. Now he couldn't think of anything else when he thought about home, this house, with Sebastian, Nyle and Starlord. That was home. He laid half on top of Sebastian, with his arms draped over his chest "It wasn't bad, it was just... I went to visit Jason, he's... not exactly well. So my wolf wasted double the energy worrying the whole night" Chris sighed, then rushed to add "He's fine, by the way. Like, physically and all. It's just... sad to see him like that." When Sebastian talked about Nyle's visit to the vet, Chris gasped in fake shock "How dare you call my son fat! He's perfectly in shape, that vet has no idea what he's talking about" He said a little louder, as if to make sure Nyle heard him, then whispered "Maybe we can mix it with some of his wet food? Until he gets used to it? I can get some more tomorrow when I go grocery shopping. Well. Today."
He listened carefully and nodded when he heard it was because his alpha seemed to be dealing with a hard time, “well it’s normal he’s gonna need some time. I’m sure it’s hard to go through losing someone you love,” he sighed as he tightened his hold on Chris, “I’m glad he has you to be there for him,” he smiled a bit. He chuckled when Chris reacted as he expected, all offended about the vet’s instructions, “well he said Nyle is not getting any younger and we need to watch out, so he doesn’t have knees problems as he get a bit older,” he explained and then nodded, “we’ll do that. We can help him ease to it. Maybe Starlord would want to join to help,” he suggested knowing their other dog wouldn’t like the plan.
He hummed and reached to caress Chris’ cheek, just looking at him with an unreadable expression, “When I moved here and I never in a million years thought I would be lucky enough to find someone like you,” he smiled, “and look at us now… three years later and I don’t think I could be any happier than I am,” he sighed.
"I hope we never find out" Chris murmured, snuggling closer to Sebastian. The idea of losing him was one he'd rather not dwell in or else he'd get really upset. And clingy. "I mean, Starlord eats pretty much anything you put in front of him, if we throw in some of those chew bones, he'll probably be convinced to join the new diet" he chuckled. He absolutely loved Starlord, but his baby wasn't the brightest tool in the shed.
His gaze softened when Sebastian said those words and Chris tangled their legs together, playfully nudging him with his feet "Well I can say, falling off that boat was the luckiest thing that ever happened to me" he chuckled "Also stopping for coffee that day and finding some stinky guy." He teased, leaning in to kiss his lips once more, repeating against his lips the words he was never tired of saying "I love you"
“Hopefully we never will,” he smiled even if he knew nothing lasted forever, he would still hold on to his forever with Chris. “Then we can do that and have them both into a healthier diet. The vet said it would be only for six months,” he added knowing that the information would help Chris relax knowing it wasn’t permanent.
Bas chuckled cause only Chris could make his accident sound like a good thing, and he couldn’t agree more, “you’re never gonna stop calling me stinky even when you’re the one coming home smelling like forest and dead squirrels?” he teased as he poked his ribs before accepting the kiss, “I love you too… more than anyone in the world,” he sighed, “I just can’t imagine my life without you. I don’t want to even think about it cause in my head I’ve decided that I’m keeping you forever,” he scrunched up his nose, “but since that’s actually not a decision I can make for you,” he sighed, “just… marry me?” he asked with a nervous expression when the words left his mouth cause this really wasn’t the way he was planning to pop the question. He just couldn’t wait any longer.
Hearing that it was not a permanent made him sigh in relief, it meant that Nyle wasn't in such a bad situation, just a tiny treatment and he'd be good as new. "Oh good! They can both handle a couple of months with a new diet. And who knows, maybe they even like it!"
That made him laugh and squirm when Sebastian poked him. In retaliation, Chris poked his chest "Hey! I showered, didn't I?" He joked, leaning into another peck. He sighed happily at Sebastian's declaration, a warm feeling in his chest. "Well good thing I- wait, what?" Chris pulled back, blinking and sitting onto the bed, confused. Did he hear it correctly? "What did- what did you just say?"
Bas hummed, “I’m sure they’ll get used to in no time and they’ll even complain when they go back to their old food,” he said knowing how their dogs sometimes were a bit dramatic and Chris was the spoiling parent so they took advantage of it.
He nodded, “you did but I’ve smelled you before,” he teased knowing Chris would know it wasn’t really true. He noticed the moment when the words made click in Chris’ head, “would you marry me?” he asked again feeling his voice tremble a little out of nervousness cause somehow the possibility of Chris saying no became very, very real.
Was he awake? He couldn't be awake, this was one of those scenarios that came to his mind right before he fell asleep, wasn't it? No, but those usually had a more dramatic setting. They never happened at their place, usually they were in a fancy restaurant or on a picnic or on freaking Disneyland - except in that one with the rose petals and the candles around the bed. They were always dismissed too, because they were usually too corny for them, and yes, Sebastian was a sweetheart and a softie, but he was always more authentic than that, and Chris' mind never settled on a prediction of how this would go - or if this would happen, he had always hoped it would, but still, it's not something you just assume, so much that he had started making plans himself on how to propose to Sebastian, but then he was shot down by his own mind when he asked himself if he'd be proposing because he wanted to or because he just couldn't wait for Sebastian to take his time, and then he'd get into a spiral of how maybe Sebastian was taking longer to do it because he didn't actually want to marry him and what if- WAIT HAS HE NOT SAID ANYTHING!? "YES" he blurted out after about a whole minute of freaking out inside his head, wrapping his arms around Sebastian's neck in a tight hug, a stupid non-believing grin on his face as he chuckled wetly, unsure of what to say except that single word "yes, yes, yes I- YES"
Sebastian was starting to getting worried when Chris only looked at him with a shocked expression. He didn't want to assume he would say yes because even when they had talked about it Chris had said he wanted to marry him but what if he had changed his mind? What if maybe he didn't want to get married because he didn't believe in marriage? What if it was too soon? That was for sure the longer minute of Sebastian's life until he hear that word and he let out a breath he hadn't noticed he was holding, and Chris' arms were around his neck and then there was a full chant of yeses, "you scared of there for a minute," he sighed as he rolled them around in the mattress and laid on top of his boyfriend. No! Not boyfriend anymore, fiancé! "I love you, Chris and now I finally can give you this," he said as he shifted enough to reach the drawer of his bedside table to get the black velvet box where the ring had been sitting for months! "Lemme do it properly now," he chucked as he climbed off of Chris and knelt on the bed, "Chris, would you do me the honor of being my husband?" He asked again as he opened the box to show the white gold band with small diamonds forming a crescent moon in the middle
Chris giggled at that "I'm sorry I'm sorry! I just- it's stupid but I thought I was sleeping" he blushed brightly, laughing when Sebastian rolled them around. The smile didn't seem to be able to leave his face, at least not for awhile and he watched curiously as Sebastian got on one knee and- "Wait, how long has it been there?! How did I not see it?!" He chuckled, then nodded with watery eyes as he offered his right hand for him to put the ring on "Yes, there's nothing I'd like more in the whole world than being your husband, Bas"
Sebastian shook his head, "honestly, this is far for what I had planned for a proposal, but I realized that it didn't matter how much I planned it. All it mattered was that you said yes."
Sebastian shrugged, "I brought it from L.A almost a year ago but it's been there on and off cause I had it with me a few times we were out," he admitted as Chris offered his hand for Sebastian to finally put the ring on it, "I hope you like it," he said before bringing Chris' hand to his lips to press a kiss on it, "good cause I can't wait for you to be Mr. Riggs-Hardwood."
Those words made Chris chuckle and he nodded along "it IS the whole purpose of proposing I guess" he teased with a smile.
"L.A.?! But that's- you've had it this WHOLE TIME?! Oh my God, Sebastian!" He blushed when Sebastian kissed his hand, then pulled him up so he'd join Chris back on the bed again and the wolf could admire the ring, the little crescent moon sparkling against the sunlight that started to come from the window "It's perfect" he said in a reverent whisper, then shrugged "Or Harwood-Riggs. Christopher Riggs kinda sounds cool too" he offered, looking for his ~boyfriend~ fiancé’s reaction.
Bas nodded and chuckled, “it is but I kinda wanted to make it something huge and special and all but almost eveyrone reminded me that it didn’t have to be like that, that it only should be special for the two of us,” he said with a smile, “and everything already is special when it’s with you,” he grinned.
He shrugged, “I’ve been wanting to marry you for a very long time, but I guess I’m a little slow sometimes,” he admitted cause if he had acted as impulsively as he could be, he would’ve proposed as soon as Chris moved in. His heart melted a little when he noticed Chris’ expression as he inspected the ring and said it was perfect, “I’m glad you think so,” he snuggled closer, peppering kisses on Chris’ neck. "I don't really care much about the order as long as there's a Riggs there. I just thought you probably would want to keep your father's last name," he said before kissing Chris' lips.
Chris whined, cheeks blushing a dark red when Sebastian was all romantic and sappy "Sebastian! You can't just say things like that!"
Chris chuckled when he said he was slow "It's okay, I can be the fast one of us both" he pecked his hunter's lips, then nodded "I do-" he noticed what he said, blushing again and adding "Wait, that I'm supposed to say in the altar, not now. I meant that I want to keep his name, yes, but I like yours. Ours."
Sebastian smiled, "why not? It's true," he said cause now it was just normal for him to say whatever was in his mind when he was with Chris.
He nodded, "that you are for sure, but I beat you to propose," he teased even if he had already told him he was gonna propose. "Well we can talk about it and decide how we want our last name to be. We still have time, and we need to think about how it'll sound better with our future kids names," he half joked because they had never talked about starting their own family.
Chris giggled at that, blushing and nuzzling Sebastian neck to hide his face. "Because it's-" he couldn't come up with a reason "...romantic and I don't know how to deal with that"
He pretended to gasp when Bas said he beat him to the proposal "Excuse you! I've been talking about proposing to you for MONTHS with Seth, I just never found the perfect ring." Part of him knew he'd never find it, because he wanted to have the opportunity to give him his parents' rings, like a legacy, but he discovered not long ago that they were buried with them. He stopped breathing when he mentioned their children. "Kids?" Chris pulled back to look him in the eyes, to see if he was kidding or not, his brain short circuiting.
Sebastian hummed and pressed a kiss on the top of Chris' head, "well just enjoying my cheesiness," he suggested.
"Well, I'm kinda glad you couldn't find a ring and beat me to it but just for the record I would've said yes even with a ring pop," he assured. He nodded and smiled, "only if you want to," he added so Chris wouldn't feel pressured.
He chuckled when Sebastian talked about the ring pop, snuggling closer "God, I love you cheesy"
"I do" he blurted out, then add with an embarrassed chuckle "shit, I keep saying that before the time! But- I mean, yes. I'd... very much like that. I- I think. With you."
"Good cause I love you too," he chuckled sighing happily as they snuggled comfortably in bed even if the sun was just coming out.
"I love how that sounds and can't wait for you to say it in the wedding," he grinned both for the word and the fact that Chris also wanted a family. "Perfect. I love the idea of having kids with you. To start our very own family now," he murmured between kisses all over Chris' face.
Chris giggled at the kisses, squirming slightly before pressing his lips against Sebastian's. He was dead tired, but he couldn't wait to start that new phase of their lives together. The metal band around his finger felt heavy and warm and he found himself staring at it with a stupid smile on his face. So many feelings twirled inside his chest, but most of all he felt loved, and that was something he never thought he'd have. "I can't wait, Bas" he murmured, letting his eyes fall closed as he rubbed circles on Sebastian's chest "I love you" he repeated, then added with that stupid smile "My fiancé."
This was it. This was all the perfection and bliss Sebastian had wanted for the proposal. Just then. Making it special and something just between them. Maybe they could throw a dinner to celebrate with their friends, but this moment was just for them. He smiled when he noticed Chris kept looking at the ring, "me neither. It's only gonna be more awesome from here on," he said confidently, "I love you too," he assured but then chuckled, "I love that title but I'm sure I'm gonna love more the next one," he sighed closing his eyes and relaxing, "we should get some sleep cause we have a whole life together ahead of us," he murmured into Chris' ear as they both know, letting the world wake up while they were ready to sleep.
And for the first time since he arrived her heart didn’t betray her, she was saying the truth. And that broke Chris’ heart.
“You don’t who I am” It wasn’t a question, and his eyes filled up with tears the exact moment realization hit him. “I’m- I-” and he was spiraling, unable to come up with reasons for her to remember him at all, that voice he so diligently tried to shove to the back of his head reminding him how not special he was.
Instead, with a broken whisper, he reapeated “What happened, Maya?”
It all came rushing back to Maya why she had tried to cover up her memory loss. It was the look she was getting now, the disappointment and pain it was clearly causing him. The feeling of being wrong tightened her chest again. “I’m sorry,” she said as an answer to his non-question. She didn’t remember him. She didn’t remember anyone.
At his actual question, she shrugged. “I went to bed on night in December of 2021 in a roadside motel and when I woke up in was 2022 and I was sleeping next to someone I’d never met before,” she replied. Sighing, Maya added, “Which despite the whole being a huge slut thing, actually never happens. I always go back to my own bed. I like to hog the covers.” It was not the covers, but she wasn’t about to come out and say it was due to her unresolved childhood issues.
Food forgotten, Chris wiped at his face, eyes looking anywhere but at Maya. His mind was reeling, he could only imagine how she was feeling, Chris's heart ached imagining the pain his friend was in. Or maybe not at all, they said ignorance was bliss, right? It certainly didn't feel like bliss to him.
"What about Hermes?" He asked when his eyes fell onto the dog "You don't...? Oh god" Poor baby. Did she even know how to take care of him now?

Maya knew immediately that she had fucked it up. She probably should’ve owned it right away, but it was exhausting explaining what had happened over and over. She took an automatic step back when he took a step forward.
“I, um…” she ran her fingers through her blonde hair, “I can’t remember anything from…pretty much the whole last year. I actually was only here because Warren claimed I spend a lot of time here and I though it might help me remember.” Maya looked around slightly hopeless at the house that had traces of her, but that she had no memory of.
And for the first time since he arrived her heart didn’t betray her, she was saying the truth. And that broke Chris’ heart.

Sebastian knew he should’ve told Chris before but he didn’t want to talk about something this delicate on the phone or through texts and it seemed like life had decided to make it impossible from them to talk before Chris decided to venture himself and visit Maya.
He was pacing on their living room after he got the panicked text from his boyfriend saying that something was wrong with Maya. He looked up when he heard the door, “Hey… come here,” he said opening his arms cause he already knew how upset Chris would be.

Chris ran home after that, heartbroken. He didn’t remember crying, but his face was wet with sweat and tears when he opened the door. Somehow, he didn’t feel anything, just numb. And it was scary, if he didn’t feel anything it was because the wolf had taken over.
He didn’t say anything, he just waked straight into Sebastian’s arms, hiding his face in his chest and inhaling deeply, trying to bring himself back.
