it takes quite a bit of social intelligence for a creature to understand:

I know what I am doing is wrong

I know there is an activity that looks similar that is not wrong

If I am quick I can plausibly pass one off as the other

these cats are displaying remarkable theory of mind skills by not only registering that the humans can perceive them but actively trying to manipulate that perception! that requires one to be aware that other individuals have complicated interior thoughts of their own, to know that those thoughts are not always based on truth, and to quickly decide on the best possible “lie” for the situation. this is why I despise animal intelligence tasks based on obedience— some of the most clever moments stem from intelligent disobedience.

#reblogging bc this is cute but also need to nerd out since im a cognitive science major #there is still arguement that this kind of cat behavior isnt proof of theory of mind #theory of mind is awareness of what another individual knows in their own head. its having a theory of anothers mind #the most popular example of theory of mind is having children under a certain age do a false belief task #children who pass can tell that a person doesnt know whats in the drawer bc they werent there when it was opened #and those who fail believe the person does know even though they didnt see the person open the drawer or be there when it was opened #anyways. theory of mind for cats here would be to claim the cat knows the human does not like their behavior and will stop when caught #but it doesnt account for conditional training. does the cat REALLY know #or does the cat know when its being looked at a certain way its going to be shooed or stopped?#if the cat does this behavior a lot and the human responds to that behavior #then the cat may be conditionally trained that it gets 'punished' when human sees it do that behavior #its a seriously important discussion on what theory of mind is #but this is not to say the cat does not display intelligence. the most common mistake is to equate theory of mind as proof of intelligence #which is what many cognitive and psychological scholars have done before #chom reblogs #thats my rant
