I recently went through a 7-day fast in order to test some things out involving my digestive system (I’ve discovered I likely have a serious issue with my gallbladder or have Chron’s Disease) and jotted down some notes each day on how I felt. I’ll copy them here.
Day 1: Normal, slightly hungry but nothing really new. I'm a pretty experienced faster so 1 day was no biggie for me.
Day 2: Intense hunger cravings like crazy! Man, I wanted some sort of Asian noodle dish so bad! Day 2 is always so horrible to get past.
Day 3: A lot of the hunger cravings had passed, though I still had a couple less severe cravings for salty foods. I figured I was low on sodium, so I boiled some beef bouillon cubes in water and put a bunch of Tabasco hot sauce in it. I LOVE that stuff. It's all cayenne and vinegar, really. My cravings went away that night afterwards.
Day 4: On day 4, I had a cup of coffee and the leftover broth from the previous day. I had a huge burst of energy that day, but near the end I felt a little worn out.
Day 5: I drank two bottles of water and will probably be heating up some of the (still) leftover broth I made the other day. I'll probably drink more water too. I only got 4 hours of sleep today, so I'm not sure if it is due to sleep deprivation or the fast, but I was very tired today. Hunger is very mild right now (no more stomach cramps, but I feel hungry sort of in my throat if that makes sense), but I do miss chewing food and the taste of it!
Day 6: Started to have low energy that day, but it wasn’t too big of a deal because it was my day off from work. I went to sleep early and woke up late.
Day 7: Cravings came back. The smell of food was intoxicating. All day that day I felt nauseous, dizzy, and had no energy. I decided to break my fast on midnight.
During my fast, I experienced no digestive issues at all. My energy stayed with me throughout most of it, and really only started to escape me when I stopped drinking as much water and did not take my electrolyte supplements. From now until at least the end of the year, I will be fasting 7 days every other week, and on the days in-between I’ll fast from Sunday to Wednesday. I feel that is very manageable at my current weight and is sustainable at least until my weight drops lower. In the mean time, I can enjoy the lack of digestive troubles and stomach pain. It’s really time to set up a doctor’s appointment. Really not looking forward to that colonoscopy/endoscopy.
Edit: I forgot to include that in 7 days I dropped 11 lbs, however the majority of that was water weight.
