So fun to hear that you want to start to draw :)

First of all, I may not be the best at giving advice, but I think you are never wasting time when practicing drawing. Anything you draw will be a step forward, even if it’s the same thing each time. It will take some time and effort, but you’ll get better as long as you keep at it.

Here’s some advice for anyone who is starting out: 

Reference photos are not “cheating”, but a good way to see how objects interact or how anatomy works in different poses. Use them. Google whatever you like and sketch from it. There are also some great sites for reference pictures and posing. Learning the basics is fundamental, so studying anatomy when you want to draw people or animals is a good start.

No matter what you want to focus on drawing (cartoons, realism, animals, landscapes) there are lots and lots of tutorials and artists who specialize in these subjects. Study them. Learn from them. Keep a folder of people’s art that you look up to and want to strive for yourself; it can serve as good motivation.

Never completely copy anyone’s art, but keep inspirational art styles you like close by. Every artist takes a little bit of this and a little bit of that and makes something new, something personal and individual. Don’t be afraid to experiment, to try and fail, to kill your darlings every once in a while.
