I really try not to go on tirades like this but there’s something that really, really bugs me on occasion about online headcanons. I’ve noticed it especially in the Ace Attorney community.

Why, when a character is verbally/emotionally abusive to begin with, do people also feel the need to add on later that they were physically/sexually abusive as well? While I do understand the instances where people are projecting onto the abused character, I really don’t see the point in any other case. I personally find it incredibly shallow.

Why CAN’T abuse be “left to” verbal, mental, and/or emotional? Aside from the instances of projection for catharsis, it strongly FEELS (feels) (important FEELS) (this is not fact this is how it FEELS to ME) as though people are downplaying the effects of verbal and emotional abuse. These headcanons, in my opinion, feel like they say “verbal/emotional abuse wasn’t enough.” Even speaking as someone who has faced physical and sexual abuse, yes, it’s awful, but these hcs help things feel like a big pissing contest over who has “the worst trauma,” and it really takes a lot of the weight of the concept from people who have only experienced hands-off abuse.

I see it a great deal with Blaise and Kristoph especially. I can’t talk in depth about Blaise because all I have to go off of is the fan translation right now, but I do not recall a single moment he ever stated or implied he laid his hands on Sebastian (it’s been years since I last played through the whole game, and again, I haven’t touched the official translation yet, so PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong!). Kristoph, I do not believe would go beyond the scope of what was done in canon, nor was it ever really implied or referenced or anything. In both cases, their impact on all characters they’ve affected is clear.

While one can make the argument that you don’t know what they’re doing off screen—and that’s fair, and in that case, as I stated before, you can headcanon whatever you like, it doesn’t mean I have to like it—I often find in fandom spaces people focus on these headcanons and how they work instead of the potential effects of emotional, mental, and verbal abuse the victims have sustained in canon.

I want to see more of Sebastian being easily guilt tripped, and eventually learning to identify crocodile tears and stand up for himself in those moments. I want to see more of how Klavier directly stood up to Kristoph, but maybe the aftermath of potentially regretting it, because his brother “never technically ‘actually’ did anything to him,” even though that isn’t the case in the slightest.
