she's so transgender they're trying to say it's mistranslated from the japanese version
"Oh but this male character is being sexualised too! So it's a win against sexism" and 100% of the time it's either a joke about how ridiculous it would be for men to be sexualised because they're real people and not objects, or it's fully just homophobic and or transmisogynistic

Unironically I think the early to mid 20s age group in America has unbelievably bad consent boundaries on all levels and so much language to defend it but this makes me sound like elon musk if I say it however the commonality of someone who will be like “I had 47 panic attacks and it’s your fault” if you tell them no is insane
I rejected someone and got called “the scariest person I’ve ever met” with so much therapy speak interspersed like alright okay alright okay alright okay
“You just say whatever you’re thinking and I don’t know how to handle it” was verbatim part of this conversation. Also everyone hates to see an autistic bitch
When I was in this age bracket, there was a huge emphasis on improving consent culture via graceful rejection, and it's gone by the wayside. Which sucks.
Twice in my youth (once in high school and once in college) I was in situations where I was asking someone out and I could tell they were calculating in their heads the risks of rejecting me, and both times I said, out loud, "you can say no, I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't prepared for either answer." And then they said no. This wasn't some spark of special wisdom I had - I knew to do it because feminist conversations among my age group brought it up regularly. This isn't happening nearly enough anymore.
More recently, I was really glad when we got to "rejection sensitive dysphoria" in my IOP program and it was one of those symptoms where the therapists really emphasized how it affects others. Because it does.
Being someone who cannot handle rejection makes you much more likely to violate boundaries, and yes, that includes sexual ones. Yes, you, reader who has never hurt a fly. If you don't want to stumble backwards into sexually assaulting someone, fix your RSD meltdowns. If you keep them up it's only a matter of time. Because if you're nice enough to interact with, but are known to have RSD meltdowns, guess what happens when your friends and acquaintances need to reject you?

can you imagine being a parent in the pokemon world and your kid comes home with one of those straight up basically human pokemon. i know those motherfuckers can talk.
its morning. i see my childs Throh getting some oj from the fridge. 'morning', i say. he doesnt catch himself in time and says 'morning' back. he freezes and we both stare at each other knowingly. 'throh,' he says, but its too fucking late
before my egg cracked, i had noticed that trans people were often pro-accessibility and up-to-date on the needs of disabled people, but i hadn’t seen any inherent connection between the two (other than the obvious minority-looking-out-for-other-minority thing). but now that i’m trans and medically transitioning, and i have to constantly repeat myself while talking to doctors and nurses, and explain things about my own anatomy to medical staff who should already know this, and having every single problem i might have blamed on my “condition” so nothing i say is taken seriously, all of the sudden i have a little sneak peak into the life of someone who has to deal with this all the time. like shit bro, being disabled probably sucks ass, someone should do something about this
happy disability pride month, we all deserve autonomy and respect and access to medication

It recently came up in conversation with my toddler that some birds can talk, and this has caused her great concern.
See, we were talking about how movies are pretend and how in real life, animals don’t talk. I mentioned that there are some birds who talk a little bit, but not like the animals in movies, and she just looked at me like “???”
So I informed her that some kinds of parrots can copy sounds that people make, and can learn how to say words. I thought this would give her a giggle, as fun new facts often do, but she was just deeply perplexed and a little worried about this.
“Birds can talk?” “Do they ask questions?” “What do they say?” Why do they talk?” “Do chickens talk?” “What about Blue Jays?” “Why do some birds talk?” “How do they talk?” “Birds TALK???”
We showed her a video of a parrot doing the “Hello, pretty bird, give a kiss” thing, and she was dead silent the whole time, hugging her comfort pillow with her knees to her chest. We asked if she wanted us to turn it off, and she shook her head. But we also asked if she wanted to see another one, and she shook her head even harder.
I don’t know why it has distressed her so greatly to learn that some birds can mimic human speech; but then again, I don’t know why it doesn’t distress the rest of us more to know that some birds can mimic human speech.
I keep thinking about that post that’s like “The first person to hear a parrot talk was probably Not Okay.” Because that’s exactly what happened. She had never been introduced to the concept, and her entire worldview got SHOOK.
Part of why Ravens are considered Spooky Bad Things We Associate With The Faeries is because they can and do mimic human speech - but much, much better than a parrot. With a parrot, you can tell something is off about the sound. You can tell it doesn’t belong to a human. Ravens don’t sound like that, no, cause they’re overacheivers. (And passerines). They sound EXACTLY like the voice of whoever they are mimicking.
But more importantly they love the sound of human laughter. No one knows why. But it is totally, 100% possible, and it happens to this day, to walk along the paths in the Black Forest and suddenly hear a strange kind of giggling sound, or maybe even a very clear, definitely human sounding “hello?” “Hiiiii!” Or “let’s go!”.
However, it takes a lot of practice for them to copy sounds as perfectly as they do, so you’re equally likely to hear something that definitely sounds human-like, but the words make no sense and the sound is unlike any language you know.
Ravens at the Tower of London do this all the time. Theyre pretty sociable with humans though, so they do it quite openly. I have seen videos of people, mostly Americans, look absolutely spooked out of their skins when a big ol’ raven (mind ye, these are birds that are 2 feet tall with a 5 foot wingspan) comes waltzing up on the deck and starts talking to them.
And ravens, especially the ones there that have been bred and raised by humans for centuries, don’t just imitate - they have one of the same language processing genes we do, and they understand the way a toddler might that things, places, and individuals have names, and can string together basic sentences much like an african grey.
I know because I used to work with one, Darlene, who knew, quite well, what she wanted and how to ask for it. If you were preparing her breakfast, she would hop on up and investigate. She used to be an illegal pet, and had been taught “manners”. That is to say, if she went for something and you told her, sternly, “mind your manners missy!” She would stop, look at you, perhaps for up to a minute, and then point with her beak to what she wanted. If that did not work, she would ask, in plain English, “grape?” Or “Darl have grape?” And lord help you if you gave her anything less than what she asked for. She would throw it at you, and try to bite you, sometimes while saying “No!” In the same tone as I imagine she was reprimanded in her home.
So yeah. Parrots arent the only ones.
Was anyone gonna tell me that ravens can talk or was I meant to read about it on a tumblr post?!
Talking Ravens has been a trope in fantasy for so long that people forgot that it is based in fact.
i think if you showed minecraft or fortnite to a little medieval peasant boy he would probably start writing parodies of church hymns. it’s human nature
this has rendered me speechless
thinking about slay the princess. Ive seen queer readings of the game before and i respect the hustle but i feel like a lot of them miss the point of the player character being a man and the princess being a woman. Theres a very intentional gender dynamic happening and thats a chunk of the point i think?
The long quiet is constructed with more agency than the princess and the princess has to be on her guard with you because of the nature of how the Construct constricts you both to your particular roles, you as the agent with control who's been instructed to be the aggressor despite the little instinctively empathetic voice in your head telling you that its wrong, and the princess as a prisoner of your interaction despite anything she might be capable of or any hope that you'll be kind, in the same way that men are often taught to be forward and aggressive while women are taught to be on the defensive against the risk of dangerous men. Like to me thats flagrantly a metaphor for how the societal construction of patriarchy and oppositional sexism can make dating women as a man and dating men as a woman become a minefield of trust and power dynamics instead of an open, free relationship of equal comfort and agency, and the subsequent evolutions of those routes explorations of how past dating experiences can color future ones or change your perspective on the past. If your last girlfriend hurt you, you may fear the next doing the same, or if you hurt your last girlfriend, the guilt may haunt you into your next relationship, and so on.
and thats reflected by the princess as a creature of perspective warped by how you percieve her as the Other, and also reflected in how there is One Specific Way this interaction is Supposed To Go if you listen to the narrative being sold to you and the game tells you in no uncertain terms to accept and follow it without question will leave you miserable and Cold, each new voice in the long quiet's mind a new lense to see the other Through.
Which isnt me saying a queer reading shouldnt be done in fact i think its, at times, one of the bisexualest games ive ever played where nothing explicitly same gender attracted is even possible because its most hopeful and healthy endings come from choosing to say fuck allllllll that noise and learn to intimately understand eachother's perspective with compassion and respect eachother's agency as fully realized people now that you're seperate yet intertwined despite how the narrative tries to pit you against eachother and treat you as two irreconcilable opposites rather than one whole thats been split apart arbitrarily by some guy who probably never bothered to understand why his wife left him when he thought everything was perfect because they were doing what they were Supposed To and decided that meant he should put together a plan to kill the concept of change to prevent 'the end of the world' even after he's long dead, a ghost, and Echo, and now you, the inheritors of this man's decision to split you into two beings in a construct made in no uncertain terms to keep you from understanding eachother, have to navigate being separated concepts and decide what your connection ought to look like. why else would 'happily ever after' be the first and only thing to make the narrator admit maybe he'd been trying to do something horribly wrong, if an eternal ending of static, shallow, conflict-free unconditional love where youre both far too afraid to challenge your roles and change even if the spark is dying and it rots in your mouth, and even you, his god-monster crafted symbolically in his own image, could let her go, and leave together on good terms so you can both move on to experience a brighter future, whether that be together or not.
Used to it…
sometimes i have strong opinions but they're also so inane that halfway through writing a post i'll be like "yeah, this is Absolutely not worth the energy it's taking" and delete everything. but then the opinion is still in my head. and i still want to share it. so within five minutes i go "you know, i bet i can phrase it more succinctly this time" and anyway. you all see where this is going. sometimes i do this four times in a row before i give up on the specific inane opinion and instead write a vague post about the concept of opinions as if that'll satisfy the urge to post the entirety of my inner monologue online. may or may not be relevant to what you're reading right now. and now all our lives have been enriched. you're welcome
