“you wanna know how i this insane?”
the joker
are you serious?
and the winner of superwholock is officially??? no one. we all lost. congrats team
creating comics
one of the many reasons i hate UB in standard -- and marvel super heroes is really emblematic of this -- is that the need to print recognizable characters on draft chaff uncommons turns it into nothing more than "remember king kong, remember ferris bueller?"
like there were deep cuts in 40K, WHO, and PIP that were exciting to me, but they were exciting because i was seeing a character or element that i liked being creatively represented through magic's mechanics.
i love trazyn the infinite's vast collection and ability to upload his mind being represented by giving him all the activated abilities of artifacts in your graveyard, incidentally making him a crazy niche combo piece. i love the valeyard, the prosecutor in the corrupt kangaroo court from trial of a time lord, rigging votes. i love yes man changing controllers whenever you use him to represent his inability to decline orders from whoever stumbles across him
i love those cards because they make weird, niche use of magic mechanics to convey something about the narrative of the source material. i cannot imagine that i would love any of these cards if they were draft archetype glue in a standard legal set with text like "whenever you SETMECHANIC, gain 1 life". and so like, i just can't imagine what a superfan of [checkes set reveals] Agent Maria Hill or Viv Vision Teen Synthezoid is getting out of these completely uninspired generic card designs other than literally being able to point and go "i recognize that character design and name!"

It's actually kind of impressive how the Nintendo Direct voiceovers manage to communicate via inflection alone which specific words in the script have a ™ after them.
RULES FOR DATING MY DAUGHTER:
my daughter cannot, through action or inaction, harm a human or allow a human to come to harm
a daughter at rest or in constant motion remains at rest or in constant motion unless acted upon by another force
daughters are never created or destroyed, only transformed
always treat every daughter as loaded, even if you know she isn't
you do not talk about my daughter
Metroid Fusion, Game Boy Advance.
if you free yourself from seeing capital M capital S Magic Story as the primary or even desirable form for storytelling in magic the gathering you will discover that the narrative of march of the machine, the actual set of cards, was incredibly good
i disagree? like. reading the story makes it Worse for sure but just the cards still have:
compleation being a paint job (see cards like furnace reins, with clean framed metal growing over someone) instead of cool invasive surgery
...and also shorthand for "not human and not worth relating to." killed without remorse (or at least without doubt)
all the phyrexians going immediately inert at once when norn dies
all the invasion cards showing phyrexia getting owned, often in a silly or casual way (see kylem, ixalan, ulgrotha, etc). literally all of them see phyrexians getting Dunked On
planeswalkers losing their sparks for no reason, something i'm not sure anyone who likes these characters liked
even just going by card stock, characters like tamiyo have been around a long time, became loved, got compleated, and were then buried without ceremony, while at the same time phyrexia went out with a whimper
if you're arguing that MOM is cool in a vacuum then like, i dont like it but its not foul or anything. but even disregarding magic story i think we should assume most players have at least seen a BRO or ONE draft or something, and if youve seen that then like. i mean id be disappointed by MOM
in order:
compleation being a paint job (see cards like furnace reins, with clean framed metal growing over someone) instead of cool invasive surgery
i agree that there's a few artworks that are very disappointing throughout the new phyrexia arc, but to me the worst offenders are the white 'guy in a muscle suit' cards from ONE and the associated continuing retreat from elesh norn's incredible original design (which every set post the original New Phyrexia took part in). i think MOM is the set that best sells the horror and impact of compleation by far--it sells the serious imapct of the phyrexian invasion by having signifcant, beloved, iconic characters from planes get compleated. the flip cards are absolutely excellent as a before-and-after, as actually selling the narrative of phyrexia as transformation.
you can argue that the phyrexianization shown on furnace reigns is uninspired, sure, but it's clearly not a 'paint job' if you look closely at the art: i don't think there is anything 'clean' abotu the patchwork seam between flesh and metal at the face, or the burning rings keeping the horns in place. MOM has plenty of great phyrexian designs: gitaxian spellspear, bloated processor, seraph of new capenna, rona tolarian obliterator...
...and also shorthand for "not human and not worth relating to." killed without remorse (or at least without doubt)
this is ofc true but is also true about ever other use of phyrexia in magic's history and the sci-fi tropes it's drawing on. i don't think this ones makes a lot of sense to lay at MOM's feet
all the phyrexians going immediately inert at once when norn dies
this is still obviously a moronic plot point and retcon, but when you look at the set disconnected from the Magic Story, it is something that is said to happen on one card amid hundreds -- it is a major, inescapable part of the Magic Story, positioned inescapably at the climax, but it is a very small element of the set's narrative as seen on the actual cards.
all the invasion cards showing phyrexia getting owned
sure, the invasion cards show the phyrexian invasion being defeated. that's always going to be the outcome of the story, you can't actually have the phyrexians compleat planes that wotc might be planning returns to. "the bad guys lose" is the table stakes for serialized genre fiction, and you can't blame MOM for magic being that. but also, i think this characterizes the set as one-sided, when i really don't agree -- again, i think this criticism is founded in the Magic Story, where the phyrexian invasion is resolved mostly offscreen in a few short stories, which is anticlimactic for a linear narrative. in the set, however, the battles show phyrexian defeats because the transform cards are all showing phyrexian victories. etali, heliod, polukranos, are not just iconic characters but characters who are metaphysically emblematic of the planes they're from. even on the invasions, cards like invasion of kaldheim, invasion of vryn, and invasion of eldraine put emphasis on what was lost or destroyed either as a cost of defeating the invasion or before it could be defeated.
often in a silly or casual way (see kylem, ixalan, ulgrotha, etc).
the invasion of ixalan flavor text is lame and marvelcore, but i don't think anything about the actual narrative of the card is 'silly' or 'casual' -- the exact same narrative is played fully straight on limited all-star burning sun's fury. i'll also defend kylem -- kylem is for all intents and purposes a low-stakes joke plane. some level of tonal dissonance is inevitable when you do a crossover, i think having the invasion of kylem card feel unserious was the cost of having one at all. you can argue that's a bad decision, but i think that's just some of the table stakes of crossovers. as for ulgrotha, i think an ancient vampire with a bat chariot kicks ass and rules.
i love the invasion cards, and i love how they each represent the unique aspects of the plane being turned towards its defense. i love how they serve as culminations to entire planes of narrative: invasion of strixhaven, invasion of ravnica, invasion of mercadia stand out as fantastic narrative payoffs for those planes as a whole.
planeswalkers losing their sparks for no reason, something i'm not sure anyone who likes these characters liked
not in the set. the entire concept of omenpaths and desparked planewalkers only starts showing up in MAT, which is ofc is own years-of-magic-derailing can of worms.
like, i'm not arguing that MOM is cool in a vacuum! i'm arguing that it's cool for exactly what it is and where it is, as a culmination to the phyrexian infiltration saga as told throughout the cards in the set. the team-up cards would be meaningless if taken 'on their own', but just like the transforamtion and invasion cards, they bring the unique aspects of each plane to bear and truly represent the concept of a universe banding together to fight an impossibly huge foe. i came into the set at ONE, i loved ONE, and the more time passes and the more i look back on MOM as a collection of cards i think the narrative holds up incredibly, especially for the fraught and difficult task of landing a climactic crossover -- far better than the atrocious narrative of the associated Magic Story
if you free yourself from seeing capital M capital S Magic Story as the primary or even desirable form for storytelling in magic the gathering you will discover that the narrative of march of the machine, the actual set of cards, was incredibly good

We're at the "JK Rowling is personally funding litigation to try and destroy AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL" stage of rabid UK terf brain.
Screenshot via Alejandra Caraballo @esqueer.net on bluesky
Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*
You can read an archived version of the report here, please save it and share it.
*Not so friendly reminder there is no way to engage in the wizard books without enabling this shit.

this is such a profoundly stupid thing to be mad about but. i periodically think about how banksy made one of my single favorite pieces of art of all time, and everything else he's ever done has sucked. man, how did you nail it once
It's this piece, titled The Banality of the Banality of Evil. Because on first glance, you're like. Yeah, okay, it's obvious what it's saying. Even nazis, even evil people can appreciate beauty, too. But then you learn its name, and suddenly the interpretation shifts a bit. The idea that evil is banal has in itself become banal. my first response to seeing a nazi on a bench is "oh it's about the banality of evil" and not "jesus christ there's a nazi on the bench."
and like. i dunno i think that's a really interesting way for a title to recontextualize a piece. it's finding nuance by tearing out the nuance you want to project onto it. it's not the greatest piece of art ever made, but i'd be lying if i said i didn't have a huge soft spot for it
Okay but I have to add to this
what I find really interesting is how the way this is drawn (especially considering who drew it) the art style seems extremely deliberate. This type of nostalgic landscape painting is very reminiscent of nazi art and specifically, Hitler's art.
Nazis were extremely judgmental of "entartete Kunst" (degenerate art). Bansky's usual work very well fall into this category! So for him to go for this style of painting in particular is another choice I find very interesting, because I can see some people react to this painting with some variation of "oh, I didn't know he could actually draw! I thought he is a hack but he is a real artist!" - and that is where they would agree with the Nazis.
I dunno I just find this piece very compelling
oh that is actually fascinating. in fact, to add on- a detail I omitted because I just kinda forgot to mention it. The reason there’s two signatures in the corner is because it was a painting in a thrift shop, Banksy adding the Nazi, and then returning it to the shop.
I think there’s something interesting about recognizing the lineage of this type of art and wanting to mess with it, subvert the intent, and explore the topic and legacy. It’s potent. I really like this piece
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
i Literally told everyone who was catastrophjizing and developing insane comspiracy theories when the hybrid mana change was propposed, "wizards of the coast don't need to do an elaborate 5d chess trojan horse move to unilaterally alter the rules of Commander any time they want, they can literally just print cards". and i have never been more vindicated in my life lollll what did i tell youuu
and ofc they literally already changed the rules of commander multiple times including when the commander rules committee or whatever was nominally independent and community driven or whatever the fuck, cf. partner (!!!!), ikoria free spells--but this one is just so funny because it's exactly what everyone was tinfoil hatting about wotc insidiously sneaking into the game through the hybrid change and i was literally saying "they can actually print whatever they want, they don't need to elaborately trick you into it" and i have been immediately proven right!!

we taught a lib that data centres are essential infrastructure which they have relied on for 3 decades now and that opposition to data centres won't stop all imperial infrastructure being colonial, and the lib shot themselves
not to imply that protesting data centre construction is bad, do that for sure, we just also need to understand that if the protest succeeds then the data and infrastructure companies are just going to move on to the next most vulnerable population until they can find one without the capacity to protest, and this will continue for as long as global imperialism survives
the way this video never ceases to make me genuinely lose my mind for some reason
