Ugh I want this big happy wolf dog
If only it was an actual wolfdog. As it stands, it’s a malamute. Pls don’t do the thing, it’s so annoying and harmful. Bye.
this is loki_the_wolfdog on insta who’s already been called out multiple times by naturepunk and various others for blatant misrep. “arctic wolf” my butt.
I have been utterly inundated with folks asking about Loki since this article was posted by BoredPanda, so I figured I’d address it (hopefully for the last time!) here. ;) As already mentioned by the wonderful folks above, Loki is not, in fact, a wolfdog.
He apparently came from a breeder who is notorious within the wolfdog community for misrepresenting their animals, and, more than anything, looks to be a husky/malamute mix.
Loki is bi-eyed (one eye brown; the other blue - neither being colors attributed to wolf genetics), has defined facial markings that are very typical of a malamute, sports a plush sable coat type common in many northern breeds (but lacking a wolf V-cape and mane), and has compact “cat” feet (instead of long-toed “hare feet seen on wolves), tall thin ears (not rounded, compact, or fully-furred like wolves’), a long-haired flag tail (instead of a full bottle brush), thick limbs (not long and lanky), a blocky muzzle (instead of arrow-shaped), a snow nose (being a dog trait only), and pure white nails (also a dog-only trait). All of these are indicative of husky and malamute.
In fact, nothing bout Loki stands out as being attributable to wolf content. So while I’m glad that, at the very least, Loki’s owners aren’t trying to claim that he’s “half wolf” or any of that nonsense, this animal wouldn’t even be considered a low/no by most seasoned phenotypers in the wolfdog community. Additionally, any claims of Arctic wolf in a wolfdog should be taken with a heaping pile of salt. Only a select few breeders in the USA have legitimate Arctic wolf on their lines, and all are very well-documented. None of these breeders are producing low-content animals.
Here are some legitimate Arctic wolf wolfdogs in the high-content range for comparison:
While here are some mid-content animals strongly believed (though not verified) to have some manner of Arctic wolf content in their ancestry:
And here are some nice low-content animals (gray/timber wolf, but no Arctic) that, like Loki, have husky and malamute in them:
Above are examples of what Loki should theoretically look like if he actually had wolf (regardless of subspecies) in him. Notice that, being low-content, many of these real wolfdogs have dog traits (snow nose, plush coats, white nails, etc) but ultimately, each one does exhibit many more wolfy attributes than Loki does. The top low-content animal has a narrow muzzle, golden eyes, a pronounced V-cape, and a proper bottle brush tail (and while you cannot see from these photos alone, she also has hare feet, lanky limbs, and single-tracks while she walks). The middle pup has some very lanky limbs, small angular eyes compared to skull size (they are also gold in color), a bottle brush tail, V-cape, long narrow muzzle, and cheek ruffs.
And the final pup from the low-content line-up also has small angular eyes (gold in color), pronounced cheek ruffs, and a V-cape. And while he does have compact feet and white nails, as well as a snow nose, he does have thick fully-furred ears that are set properly on his head, and nice, blended facial markings, as well. All of these low-content animals do indeed display some manner of wolf traits ALONG with their dog ones. Loki, however, displays no wolf traits whatsoever - only dog ones - predominantly husky and malamute. In short, Loki’s owners were obviously lied to about what he is, and while that is not necessarily their fault (fact-based information about REAL wolfdogs is difficult to find, and most people are under the impression that breeders know best), I do think that they should reconsider perpetuating the wolfdog label altogether. It would be absolutely amazing to see someone as popular with the media as Loki’s owner stepping up to the plate and saying, “I was wrong about Loki’s breed. After learning more about real wolfdogs and the issues of misrepresentation, I am happy with knowing that Loki is a husky/malamute mix” or something as simple as that.
It would set an excellent example so that other ‘wolfdog’ owners out there who simply have mixed-breed wolf-a-like mutts might follow suit, cutting back, in at least some manner, on the rampant misrepresentation issues that surround the wolfdog breed. One simple step could make an amazing and positive change for so many canine lives.
