I am thankful for every scar I have accumulated over the years. I wouldn’t love & rely on Jesus today without witnessing His faithfulness in the darkest of times. Our God is a redemptive God, a healing God, a loving God, full of grace, kindness and mercy. Every scar reminds me of these truths daily. Last Summer our Bethel Church Women's Rock Climbing group had our first weekend retreat. I finally turned my evening devo into a (rather lengthy) blog. Waiting for our circumstances to change is never easy. We live in an immediate, fast paced culture that wants our answers as quickly as it takes to ask Siri. Life doesn’t always have immediate answers. Instead, we are forced to sit in our circumstances, waiting for our next steps to be revealed. Waiting can be utterly exhausting, both mentally and physically. For those who follow Him, God promises hope and renewed strength in our waiting. He promises a plan, purpose, and a perfect path that can only be revealed through patients, perseverance, and faith. No matter our circumstances, no matter how weak we may feel in the moment, God promises to carry us on the wings like an eagle into His perfect peace. #rockclimbing #chickclimber #wingslikeeagles #jesusrocks (at Rapid City, South Dakota)

A new climber has difficulty understanding that a top rope means they are not going to take a hard fall. While they get the whole concept on the ground, when on the rock, their brain refuses to believe that they are not in danger of plummeting to their death. Their brain is believing a lie, rather than truth. This reminds me of the mental maps that we form over time by our experiences, family members, friends, culture, religion, experiences and education. They shape our beliefs about our identity, right and wrong, good or bad, who is trustworthy, our self-worth, expectations of others, our purpose, and the nature of God. Basically, our mental maps are the foundation for what we believe, how we react to life events, and what we perceive as truth.
