The Lobosca family was one of those families that seemed like something out of a book or movie. They were a large, close-knit family, the kind that gathered at Nonnaâs house every Sunday for dinner. The Lobosca family had immigrated to England long before Matteo and his siblings were born, but they still held onto their Italian roots. Matteo Lobosca was one of seven siblings, so family gatherings tended to be large, loud, and full of love. When he met Abigail Smith, an only child, she quickly fell in love with her new husbands family. Matteo worked at the Ministry in the International Magical Office of Law, and Abigail was a part time tutor and full time mother to their three children.Â
Chiara was born on November 15th, the family was overjoyed. With an older brother, Mattias, and her older sister Katherine, Chiara was doted on and spoiled. Her early childhood was a happy one, spending every Sunday at her Nonnaâs house for dinner, running in the yard with her cousins and siblings, playing and laughing. When they would go home on Sunday nights, the kids would be muddy from playing outside all day, full from their dinner, tired from the long day, but most importantly, they were content and happy. Things couldnât get better for them.
But then things took a turn the summer after Chiara turned eight. The Lobosca family had a yearly tradition of camping for a week towards the end of the summer before the older kids headed back to Hogwarts. Matteo and his siblings would rent a few cabins and the family would spend a week together, drinking, eating, and enjoying each others company. The kids would run themselves to exhaustion, playing well into the night. Those were some of Chiaraâs most cherished memories.
It was the last night of the trip when it happened. Nobody had thought anything about the full moon in the sky as the kids separated for a game of hide and seek. Eight year old Chiara found a hiding spot in the woods that were near the cabins. She had had no idea that he had been watching them all day, and she had been the unfortunate one to step into his trap.Â
That night changed everything. The parents had come running when they had heard her screams, but it had been too late.
Chiara woke up in St. Mungoâs a few days later to the unbearable news. She was a Werewolf. Even at eight years old she knew what that meant. Hadnât it been the night before that her oldest cousin, Niccolo was telling them a scary story about werewolves? Her parents tried to have a positive spin on it, and they promised her that it didnât change anything. They still loved her and they would make sure that she had everything that she needed to stay safe. The healers promised that werewolves could have as normal of a life as other people, but Chiara doubted it.Â
Things changed for the Lobosca family after that.
After Chiara came home from the hospital, they attended a dinner at Nonnaâs house, but things werenât the same. She had been so excited about seeing her cousins again that she hadnât thought much about how most of them didnât visit her in the hospital. She was just so ready to go back to normalcy again that she didnât let herself focus on anything but playing with her cousins. When they got there, she noticed that some of her cousins werenât there. She had thought nothing of it, but then when dinner was served and they still werenât there, she asked the innocent question of where they were. Everyone around the table got quiet and sent furtive glances at each other. When Chiara demanded to know where they were, her brother finally told her that they werenât coming because they were afraid of her.
It was a shocking revelation, one that stuck with her for the rest of her childhood. From that moment Chiara became quieter, and she started to refuse going to her Nonnaâs house. She didnât want to be the cause of her other cousins not coming around. Chiara felt out of place even in her own family, she began to feel restless, and alone. Her parents didnât tell her that Fenrir Greyback was trying to come for her, was trying to take her to his pack. They wanted to protect her. It would turn out to be their biggest mistake.
The Lobosca family was no longer the happy family they once had been. Matteo had had a falling out with most of his family by then, over Chiara and her lyncanthropy. They had moved to a house in the country when Chiara was nine. It had lots of land, but most importantly it had a shed in the backyard that they would chain her up in on the nights of the full moon. Even though they never said anything, Chiara felt like the rest of the family resented her, and she took it to heart.
The night before her eleventh birthday, Chiara had been certain that she wouldnât get a Hogwarts letter. Why would they want a werewolf at school?Â
The letter came that morning. It was the first time that Chiara felt hope in a long time. Her parents had sent furtive looks to each other, before locking themselves in her fatherâs study to discuss sending her to Hogwarts. In the end, after a lot of discussion between themselves, and with Professor Dumbledore, it was decided that Chiara would go to Hogwarts, and they would figure out a plan for Chiara.
That year leading up to her leaving to Hogwarts, her family saw some of the old Chiara back. There were flickers of her sunny personality again, and life seemed better for them.Â
Hogwarts was everything that Chiara had always dreamed of. She was sorted into Hufflepuff, which didnât even matter that her older siblings had always made fun of Hufflepuffs. She just felt accepted for the first time since the attack. None of the other students knew what she was, she was too afraid of rejection, and she was able to explain away her monthly disappearances for a while.Â
It wasnât until the beginning of her sixth year that things started to take a turn. Chiara had a good group of friends, her parents were proud of her for all that she had done, and she had just had her first kiss with a boy named Thomas Goldstein. He was kind and smart and the two started dating shortly after that. Chiara thought that everything was perfect, and she was the happiest she had ever been.
But then she made a vital mistake. The night before Halloween, she told Thomas everything, and most importantly that she was a werewolf. He had seemed to take the news well, and Chiara thought she found someone that understood her. The next morning, Halloween, she noticed that the dormitory was empty when she woke up, and when she went to the common room, she realized what had happened. He told everybody.
Devastated, Chiara locked herself in a broom closet for most of the day, refusing to go to class, and hiding her face. She felt so ashamed, and stupid that she had trusted him, only for him to betray her trust.
It was that night that Fenrir Greyback broke into Hogwarts. She had had no idea that he was looking for her. Chiaraâs parents hadnât been able to hide it from her that he had been the one to bite her, but they had told her such horrible stories about him that she was afraid of him. He was the reason that she was what she was. He had done this to her, it was her fault. He had turned her and then damned her to a life of hell.
She was shocked when she actually met him. He wanted her. He had been looking for her. She would have a place in his pack if she defected and joined him. He almost had her before they were interrupted and she was whisked away from him.Â
Chiara couldnât stop thinking about it from that moment. As things around her got worse now that the other students knew about what she was, she held onto the belief that Greyback and his pack wanted her. She had become a pariah at school, and by the time that she returned home for Christmas holiday, Chiara was teetering on the edge of running away to find him.Â
She made the decision to leave after a particularly tense Christmas. Her brother had refused to come home for Christmas with his new wife and baby because she was there, and her mother had spent the day crying. It was all her fault that her family had fallen apart. That night she packed some things in a backpack, left a note explaining what she had decided, and she set off to find him.Â
It wasnât nearly as hard as she had thought that it would be. When she walked up to them, she had met his eyes, and for the first time since before she was turned, Chiara felt like she was at home.Â
