Hey hi hello! Cherry here! I have been busy working on a cowboy AU for our favourite traumatized Templar and his snarky inquisitor. Welcome to the Siri and Cullen of "Sparks and Spurs". I plan to post the first smut scene to AO3 to see what everyone thinks of the AU first, then if people are enjoying it or further interested, I will be going back to post chapter 1. So far its just shy of 80k words that I have been writing over the last year and around 20 or so chapters. Many thanks as always to @pastelpiisces for their nonstop support for my goblins. Chapter One - 8 Second Ride:
It was too hot, too loud, and there were so many fucking hats. Siralyn Lavellan was beginning to regret letting Lily drag her to the rodeo.
"You're gonna love this," Lily had promised, bouncing beside her in a pair of high-waisted jeans and boots that looked aggressively local. "Come on, Petoskey. When in Texas…"
Siri had rolled her eyes, but she'd agreed. Barely. Begrudgingly.
Now she stood at a fence line, a plastic cup of lemonade sweating in her hand, watching dust swirl in the pit as a massive bull tore across the ring. Another rider had just been tossed like a ragdoll into the dirt. The crowd whooped. Siri squinted into the sun.
"People actually choose this?" she muttered.
"Religiously," Lily said, sipping sweet tea. "You've never seen one of Cullen's rides before, have you?"
"Cullen Rutherford." Lily grinned. "Tall. Blonde. Stupidly good with horses. We went to high school together. He used to-"
The announcer cut her off.
"Next up, y'all, we've got Cullen Rutherford back in the ring after six months off. Some of you remember his shoulder injury, but tonight he's ridin' Hellfire."
Siri blinked. "They named the bull Hellfire?"
Cullen stepped into the ring then. He wore a burgundy plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up, tan gloves, and the kind of confident stillness that Siri recognized immediately as dangerous calm. He wasn't showy like the others. He didn't nod to the crowd. Didn't flash a smile. Just set his jaw, checked his gloves, and climbed on like it was just a typical Thursday in Austin.
The gate blew open with a loud bang. Hellfire launched.
Eight seconds of violence, dirt, and thunder. He rode like he was born on the back of a fucking storm. Siri couldn't look away. Her jaw slackened, her lemonade fell from her hand as she stared, stunned.
When the buzzer hit, he let go like he chose to fall, hit the ground, rolled to his feet, and walked off like it was nothing. No big deal.
Siri stared. Open-mouthed. Disbelieving.
And before she could stop herself, she said, far too fucking too loud:
"What the fuck is in the water down here?"
Unfortunately, Cullen did too.
He glanced up from where he'd just hopped the gate. Sweat-slick hair curled at the ends. His lip, scarred just slightly on the right, pulled into a half-smile that shouldn't have been legal. He tipped his hat, polite and slow.
