So I watched parts of TFA in French, yesterday, most especially the interrogation scene and the beginning of the snow fight, and Iâve noticed a few things that have been discussed recently and that I thought people would be interested to hear.
I know itâs been said before, but the French dubâs voice for Kylo Ren is yummy.Â
Again, I think itâs been discussed before, but when he addresses Rey, Kylo uses the pronoun âtuâ, while Rey uses âvousâ with Kylo. Now, let me explain a thing. Thing is, while English makes no difference between 2nd person singular and 2nd person plural, which is âyouâ, since it dropped âthouâ over time, French does. âTuâ is singular, and âvousâ is plural. However, when you talk to a stranger, or a superior, you use the plural pronoun, which is âvousâ. If you use âtuâ, itâs because you are acquainted or even intimate with Rey. Considering he had no interaction with Rey before, the interrogation comes out as weirdly intimate on his side. I repeat, weirdly.
However (and thatâs really interesting), when Rey says: âNon, câest toi qui a peur, de ne pas avoir la force de Darth Vaderâ, which in English is: âYouâre afraid⌠that youâll never be as strong as Darth Vaderâ, the âtoiâ, which can be translated by âyouâ, is second person singular. She isnât using second person plural, which would be here âvousâ. Make of that what you will. (Did I say I actually prefer the way the line is said in French? It translates itself by âNo, youâre the one whoâs afraid, that youâll never be as strong as Darth Vader!â How badass is that?) Not to mention that when Kylo confronts Finn and Rey in the forest, Rey tells him: âTu es un monstreâ, which is of course âYou are a monsterâ. Again, at that moment, Rey isnât using âvousâ for Kylo, but âtuâ.
Going back just before, the line âYou know I can take whatever I wantâ comes out as A LOT LESS rapey in French than in English. When I first saw the movie, it was in French, so it might have influenced my perception of the pairing and why I picked up on Reylo so quickly. In French, itâs âTu sais que jâobtiens toujours ce que je veuxâ, which translates itself word for word: âYou know I always acquire whatever I wantâ, more than âtakeâ. And since he was talking about the map five seconds before, it definitely sounds more as if he tells her that itâs not use to be sassy, and that heâs going to take the map anyway, which is, in my opinion, what weâre supposed to understand.
That aspect has been discussed for the Russian dub (I think), but when Kylo says: âHan Solo cannot save youâ, it translates itself in French by âHan Solo ne peut pas te sauverâ. âTeâ is second person singular. If he was speaking to both Finn and Rey, it would have been second person plural: âHan Solo ne peut pas vous sauver.â Heâs indeed completely ignoring Finn and focusing solely on Rey.Â
But yeah, itâs the just the dubs, and it means nothing. ;)
