Jumbo quail have a live weight of 10-14oz, and good lines lean toward the 12-15oz mark. You lose around 30-35% of bird weight when processing, and some of that is bone weight, so each jumbo yields about 6-8oz of meat.

The eggs take 2.5 weeks to hatch. It takes about 6 weeks to raise a bird to maturity, and if you want that little bit of extra they'll put on, you can wait to 8 weeks. To raise a bird to 8 weeks costs me around $2-3. BUT. I have to raise all the birds to 2.5-3 weeks to sex them, whether I eat them or not.

I don't have to pay any processing fees. I don't need buy any special equipment to process them. I don't need to buy chicks because they reproduce on their own. I don't need to have a yard (even though I do), and I don't need to deal with neighbors regarding my birds.

It takes about 6 square feet of floor space to put in a tower/rack of hutches that can hold 36 quail.

Chickens take 3 weeks to hatch. Meat birds (whom you have to purchase chicks for because they can't reproduce on their own, which is typically $2-4/head) take 6-8 weeks to grow, but heritage breeds (that reproduce on their own) take 6-8 months. In that time, the birds will consume around $8 of feed, and use around $6-10 of litter if you're cleaning appropriately. Since chickens have ground access, they're more susceptible to parasites, and have more instances of illness, so chances are good you'll be buying meds for coccidia at least, and probably meds for worming. If you want to process them, you'll need to either buy (expensive) equipment or take them to processing and pay $4-8/head depending where you take them. You also have to keep a rooster, who is loud and potentially dangerous. They average around 6lbs live weight, 4lbs processed weight (some of which is bones).

So to raise 4lbs of meat (quail) costs me about $24, takes up about 6 square feet of space, does not need equipment storage space (or rely on scheduling with anyone else), and can be done in 6 weeks. To raise 4lbs of heritage chicken meat would cost me, on average, $25+ (and tbh the number of Problems I see chicken folk having tells me it's not tallying up that cheap for them), takes up 100sq/ft+ space, needs equipment storage space, and takes 6-8 months. And also I have to deal with a fucking chicken rooster (the worst).

So, to put it lightly, it's actually tangibly more worth it than chickens, or at least fairly equivalent.

But most people aren't raising backyard birds because of cost. They're raising them for better ethics and accessibility. They're raising them for the freshness factor.

And I straight up don't really enjoy keeping chickens. They're loud, they're destructive, they're mean, they're stinky, their eggs are exactly the wrong size for me, and they're a lot of work. They're really good at getting into things they shouldn't. When I had them, it was a massive hassle, constantly, and I didn't like it. I kept turkeys, too, and most of the ones I kept were actually bigger and meaner and stupider than chickens. I had one gal I really liked but even she was a hassle because she was so ornery, but the rest were also a giant hassle - meat and heritage alike. I had some toms breach containment and kill a local wild tom. They were always trying to kill each other. They were SO loud.

The quail? On top of being cheaper and taking less time to raise, they're unobtrusive. I've selected out of aggression within a few generations. They're off the ground so I don't have to treat for parasites (I check! I do inspections and fecal exams regularly). They make some noise but it's quiet. They're super cute. The most damage they can do is scratch me. They're all dark meat, which is my preference, and since I don't eat a lot of meat in one sitting normally, they're perfect for cooking up some meat to use in dishes (quail pot pie is on my list for this week!). Their eggs are super cute, and tasty. They have neat genetics. I like them a lot!

I HAVE the ability to keep large fowl, and I do, I have a whole bunch of Peafowl, and I have eaten extra males from them, too (talk about a bird NOT worth the money it takes to raise for meat). Chickens, turkeys, ducks- they're all accessible to me if I wanted to keep them and I have kept them all at some point on my farm. But I didn't like it. I like the quail. I find them to be a good balance between efficiency and workload and enjoyment.

✷ do i have to make finished art? nope — this challenge is intended for warming up and trying new things more than anything, so quick/unfinished sketches are fine! you can 'polish' your art if you want to, but it's not required at all!

This year’s events are made to be used for platonic relationships, romantic relationships, for the new relationship and the established relationships! For those in a modern, historical, or fantasy settings! We really hope it covers as many ships as possible!

We have 10 alternative prompts, 8 to replace the week trip and 2 extras as you’d like! Feel free to swap days as well if you’d like, but we did try to be more flexible between types of events.

Scroll down the Accessibility menu and click on the Keyboard Option

Under the "related settings" tab, click "Typing" which should have a description of "spellcheck, autocorrect, text suggestions."

Turn off the AI "correct misspelled words"

and most importantly: turn off Typing Insights.

"But Mx. November, it says right there Microsoft doesn't collect the typing insights data!"

I mean, yeah, it says that..... for *now.*

It also only specifies that Microsoft themselves don't collect it, and they wouldn't have made this something that I was automatically, secretly opted in for without my knowledge if they didn't have something to be gained by me not knowing it exists!

I only found this because a cat walked on the keyboard and turned on Filter Keys and while trying to figure out why my keyboard was just making chirping noises instead of typing, I happened to click on "typing insights" by accident.
