One of my favorite things about the locked tomb is how Muir portrays immortality. Because in so many fantasy books it's a thousand year old man waiting for a teenage girl his whole life (creepy as fuck) and he's been great friends with the same people for so long and he just never changes. But the lyctors? Mercy and Augustine and Gideon I and even John? They change a lot. Their relationships change. Their morals change. Imagine living ten thousand years with your coworkers. That's probably a special kind of hell. Muir does a great job of showing that if you live that long and only a few other people live the same amount of time, you're all going to end up hating each other and wanting to kill each other eventually. You're going to end up sleeping with each other and breaking each others hearts and having codependent relationships and becoming seriously fucked up. And if you live long enough, you might have a threesome with god

The Mythraem is like the Big Brother house where a bunch of people who may or may not be able to cohabitate with each other are stuck in a place thats cut off from the rest of civilization. But if you dont like someone you cant just vote them out you're stuck with them indefinitely. Like the absolutely deranged shit they must have gotten up to would make any reality show producer blush.

i think there is something to be said about this wave of white women made media that is so surface level with an underlying racist and/or insensitive bias and that refuses to engage with criticism. i'm talking taylor swift's the life of a showgirl, emerald fennell's wuthering heights, colleen hoover, the acotar series and booktok in general, etc. whenever you dare to raise concerns about the superficiality or the questionable writing or the treatment of poc in those pieces you get shut down with a "it's not that deep" or "let women have fun". this weaponisation of misogyny to justify slop made for mass consumption, especially considering how wide spread it is becoming, scares me quite a bit. to quote princess weekes, "the girlypopification of anti-intellectualism" is truly concerning, and i do believe it is linked to the rise of far right movements worldwide. if you refuse to engage with what you are being presented with, and exclusively consume brain smoothing content "for fun" then yeah you do become more susceptible to propaganda. it is that deep.
