Falling Into Each Other
Chapter 1: Falling Further
Tim x Lucy
PG-13
Following morning after 5X20
beep beep Tim rolled over to turn off his alarm, hoping that he didnât disturb Lucy. She still had a few hours before her shift. He loved working Metro, but the hours were difficult, and having to spend so much time away from Lucy didnât make it any easier, that was what he missed most about patrol. He laid there looking at her, laying there so peacefully, she made mornings difficult, he resisted the urge to wrap his body around hers and go back to bed, even in her sleep she had a firm hold on him. He kissed her cheek, and brushed the stay hairs out of her face and she smiled, that wonderful sleepy smile, then rolled over.
He couldnât get their conversation out of his head, he knew that Lucy was moving up and how much she enjoyed undercover work. He just hadnât put it into perspective, until he saw Isabel again. It was always in the back of his mind, but then it all came rushing back. Even before she went AWOL, the sleepless nights of not knowing where she was or if she was safe. Never knowing when or if she was coming home, and then she never did. The job requires so much and then when you come back you never fully return. He remembered what it was like coming home from the Army, and how difficult it was just the once, doing it over and over almost seemed to much to bare.
Although, he knew Lucy was different, ever since day one, and he knew how strong she is. Sometimes, even through he wouldnât admit it, stronger than he was. He worried because of the best parts about her would make the job the hardest, her empathy, passion, and persistence. They were all things he admired, but he worried it would keep her in the job and cause her to lose herself. Would she be able to come home and leave it all behind her and then move on? Then on top of it all, they already had little time together now that they were in different departments, then they would have even less.
He knew the love they shared wasnât dependent on the time they spent together, they had a bond that was strong enough to get them through. They had been through so much in the few years theyâve known one another and nothing could break the bond that had formed between them, and they had strengthened together, worrying now isnât going to help anything. They would just have to wait and see what the future held for them. Lucy isn't Isabel, and he won't let the woman he loves fall down that path again, and like he already told Isabel, Lucy is different. He quietly got dressed and ready for the long day ahead, he took one last look at Lucy and slipped out the door.
beep beep The alarm blared and disrupted Lucyâs dream, she felt for Tim, even though she knew he wasnât there. His shifts started much earlier than hers, but it didnât stop her from hoping that he would be there. She sat up in bed, wishing that last nights conversation had given her more reassurance. Instead she still felt conflicted, she loved UC work but she didnât want Tim go through it all again. It was never easy, knowing the people she was leaving behind when she was working a job; Jackson, Nyla, Nolan, Tamara, and the danger she was putting herself in. Now it was different cause it wasnât just leaving friends, it was leaving the man she, well, loved and now she had more of a reason to keep herself safe. It was like leaving home for the first time, but it was every job. When she left before it didnât feel like she was leaving a part of herself behind.
The Vegas job was easier, she had Tim, even if it was before they were together. She had felt their bond grow, it was a job but the first time they kissed, and it wasnât like anything she had felt before. Even if it was questionable because she was still with Chris, but it was a job, at least thatâs what she told herself. She winced at the memory of that day, finding Chris, it made her even more uneasy, it reminded her that she had to worry about Tim coming home at the end of the day. If sheâs working a job and something happens to him, it could be days, weeks, or even months before she finds out.
But he was strong, and resilient, he took a bullet on her first day and walked away a few days later like nothing happened. Plus, if anything happened she would leave, even if he wouldnât want her to, she would work it out with Nyla. If anything happens to Tim, she would need to be pulled out, somehow. The thought through her into a small tailspin, only interrupted byâŚ
knock knock âUh, come in!â she said slightly startled and somewhat grateful. âHey, you werenât up yet so I started coffee. You alright?â Tamara said standing in the doorway, she knew it wasnât like Lucy to still be in bed this late in the morning.
âYeah no Iâm fine. Just .. lost in thought.. I guess. Thank you, Iâll be out in just a minute.â she threw the blanket off her legs, along with those painful memories, and got ready for her day. She knew Tim wouldnât do anything to hold her back and she knew her calling, her purpose, and there was no use in going to worst case scenario before she had even moved rank. She should be worried about passing the detectives exam, especially with Parr out to get her.
The rest of the morning flew by, same old thing, and luckily there were no surprises while she was patrolling. When lunch came around, she was surprised to see Tim at their usual spot from their patrol days.
âHey, what are you doing here?â she said walking toward him, she put her hand on his cheek and sat down.
âI just thought this would be a nice surprise, I had to leave so early and I wanted to get you lunch.â he said with that loving smile. It was what Lucy loved most, he had so much love to give.
âWell itâs about time, after all those lunches as your boot, I deserve some pay back.â she laughed and took a sip of her drink. Tim couldnât help but smile, that smitten smile, Lucy knew how to push his buttons he couldnât help but fall for her tricks.
âI - look,â he stuttered trying to remember what he wanted to say âabout last night, I just - I donât want you to hold back for me. I want you to do what you were meant to do. Iâll - Weâll be okay.â he held her hand to reassure her. He knew it wasnât easy for Lucy to put herself first, but she deserved it, and if she held back because of him the guilt would eat him alive. It wasnât like him to dwell on things like this, but he knew she needed to hear it more than anything. She needed to know that he would be okay, so she could focus on herself, and that he would be here no matter what.
"Lucy, I lo-" "Hey, oh am I interrupting something or..?" Nyla interrupted him before he could go any further, maybe for the best, the two looked at each other, their relationship wasn't a secret but it wasn't exactly common knowledge. "Uh, no just lunch. What's up?" Tim said, hoping that Nyla wasn't listening in on their conversation.
"Great because Lucy we just got a hit on a illegal guns dealer and its your time to shine." Nyla said with a hint of pride for her young protege. Lucy and Tim sat stunned, caught off guard by the sudden job, wether they were ready for it or not it was happening. This was exactly what she wanted, but with her current hesitation and worry for Tim, the conflict was like a weight on her chest. She was wrapped up in herself until she felt Tim's hand on her knee.
"Well? What are you waiting for?" he said with that smile he always tried to hide, she looked in his eyes for any hesitation or regret, any reason for her to say no, but all there was was pride and love. "Yea-yeah. Of course I'm in!" she rushed, she couldn't help but stand, a successful takedown of a guns dealer right before her detectives exam was bound to set her apart, even with the threat of Parr. "Alright, well we need to get you briefed so lets go catch you up to speed with Grey and the CI." Nyla said, beginning to walk away. "Um, yeah. Yeah!" Lucy smiled, "thank you so much for lunch, I'll catch up with you later. Okay?" she looked to Tim, she knew she earned this but wouldn't be able to agree to the job without his support, and knowing he was okay. "Yeah of course, I'll see you later." he spoke, hiding the fear in his voice, and smiled.
Lucy and Nyla walked back toward the station, and began sharing details of the case, as well a backstory and other words of wisdom between UC's. Lucy took a glance back at Tim, he was just sitting there watching. When he was sure Lucy couldn't see him anymore, his body all but collapsed. He was happy for her, but now it was real, she was going on a job. She can take care of herself she's smart and strong and fully capable, she can do this. When she comes home, they'll go to dinner to that sushi restaurant she loves and all will be well, it has to be.
She will come home.
