People who say voting won't help are cowards of the highest degree. You can tell because of the rhetoric they use about why voting is useless. They always hit the same points: the idea that voting is all someone will do, that voting alone will not immediately solve the biggest problems, and everytime a moderate president or whatever gets voted in they get mad about how all the problems were not solved in the course of a single term.
These people are not looking to do effective ongoing activism. They want a magic bullet they can use to immediately and with relatively small effort solve all the problems forever. Voting is very obviously not a magic bullet. It will not solve all the problems, it's not inherently permanent, and it obviously is not sufficient on it's own.
Acknowledging that voting is helpful for activist efforts acknowledges that we are fighting a long term war. That we will need to use all methods of advancement that can reasonably be implemented. That if we are not constantly vigilant any gain we make can be reversed. And most of all, it requires acknowledging that solving the problems of society is a long term project that will take many, many years, that none of us are going to see the end of the struggle, if there can ever actually be an end.
A realistic view of how voting helps requires understanding that we will be fighting our entire lives and that it will not be an easy fight.
Which is why cowards reject voting. They can't imagine clawing their way towards a better world, fighting for every inch. They can't imagine shifting the foundations of society step by step, guarding against back slides, taking every advantage we can find, even if they are small or uncertain. And most of all, they can't imagine fighting for their entire life in the hope for a better world they might never see. They want their magic bullet. Because they are cowards looking for the easy way out.
Which is why they accuse people of thinking voting will be a magic bullet. Because they think everyone thinks like they do.
