Also TW for suicide, and abuse

Ok so, I wanted to yap about this because I saw it opening day and I LOVED IT. It was perfect, and awesome, and I cried super hard. But I’ve seen a lot of people talking about certain things and I wanna address them and my opinions about it. Also even through this is semi-structured I’m still yapping and ranting a bit so leave me alone.

First of all, the people saying that Jax’s abstraction was “underwhelming”, don’t seem to understand what abstraction is. Abstraction is an allegory for suicide, it just is. And since it is, depicting Jax’s abstraction offscreen is a very good way to drive home this symbolism. When someone is lost to suicide, it isn’t big, or dramatic, or this crazy ending, it just. Happens. Especially with Pomni saying “I wish I had pried a little more”, it is obviously representing the family members affected by the suicide of a loved one. Elaborating on people’s reaction to his abstraction, Gangle’s reaction was very well done and a very real reaction from a victim of abuse. “Why can’t I cry for him” was a perfect line and I have no notes on that. A major theme of TADC is suicide, and I will absolutely die on this hill, because I feel like it’s so incredibly weird to look at this show and think “hmmm this has nothing to do with suicide at all and that is the correct opinion”.

Second, Jax’s screen time. Yeah he admittedly did have a lot of screen time, and while I would have liked to see more of the other characters I do understand why GooseWorx did this from a writing standpoint. Jax is a main character, and I really like the first person perspective they chose for the majority of his backstory stuff. Just showing how actually awful he was to everyone, especially Ribbit. I also think it managed to get rid of a lot of Jax apologists because it’s not like this backstory sequence was trying to make him look “good”. Did 30 minutes need to be spent on him? Prolly not. Did I enjoy every second of it? Yeah.

Third (these are mostly about Jax but I feel like he’s the biggest controversy of the finale soooo). And also this one is a bit more of a vague interpretation. Jax’s extremely internalized homophobia/ transphobia. I don‘t have many notes on this besides the fact that this was a 10/10 representation of internalized homophobia. Him mocking Zooble as a way of expressing his own hatred for his own gender identity, the entire… everything with ribbit. Idk I just really liked how they managed to include that as well as heavily implied transfem Jax.

4th (Jax once again suck it). “Jax deserved everything he got” I don’t like this statement. Jax is an awful person yes, and he did cause most of his problems. But I wouldn’t say “yeah he deserved to commit suicide” Because that’s essentially what that statement is. He “deserved” to face the consequences of his actions towards the other people in the circus. But this is where it gets difficult because literally. How? How would he be able to make up for the years of constant abuse and torture he put these people through? He wouldn’t. There is no fixing those relationships. But He could have talked to them, and faced them, and took ownership of his actions and did literally anything to even attempt to change and grow and improve. But he let himself rot, and die. And I don’t think he deserved that, because that is inevitably what gave him an out to facing the consequences of his actions. And he deserved to suffer those consequences.

5th and final one, lemme know of I’m dumb or smth but what was the point of scratch being there at the end? Because we don’t see him at any point after Caine “summons” him again so if anyone can maybe give me their opinion or interpretation that’d be cool. I was also ugly crying at this point in the finale so I prolly did miss something.
