GROWING UP
Rolanda was born to an unknown woman in an unknown location, left on her muggle fatherâs doorstep with naught but the basket she was left in, and her birth certificate. To this day, she isnât sure if Garret Hooch is truly her father, or if he had fallen prey to a game or con of a magical being, leaving her a changeling in an unforgiving world. Her father did his best by her, working hard as a lighthouse tender in the South Stack lighthouse of Holyhead, thinking nothing of her parentage with her wild mop of fiery hair and golden eyes.Â
She often assisted him as best she could, feeling free with the sea air in her hair, and standing on the railing looking out over the ocean. His first hint as to what she was happened when her fiery red hair started bleaching out more and more until it grew in so brightly blonde it was no longer able to be passed off as simple bleaching of the sun. Â
Unfortunately for him, it was in a burst of accidental magic during a temper tantrum that saw him suffering a broken spine. While the doctors were able to give him most of his ability to walk, the pain would linger for the rest of his life. He self-medicated this pain with more and more whiskey as time went on, growing apathetic and leaving more of his work to young Rolanda. She learned after that unfortunate incident to contain her wild temper for more appropriate time and place, leaving many of the empty bottles of whiskey shattered under the force of thrown rocks in the small backyard of the ramshackle home she grew up in. Â
START OF THE WAR
Her Hogwarts letter answered many questions she didnât even know she had, and the magical world at first seemed just that: magical. She thought sheâd found a place where she actually belonged. But then she learned the darker portion of the wizarding world when she was 14, having run afoul of a member of the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures when he correctly identified her as harpy-blooded and she found faces that had previously been welcoming suddenly outright hostile. Â
But her escape was taking to the skies as if she was born there, often being found with wind-wild hair and a nearly feral look to her eyes. But sheâd found something she was good atâgreat even, and even those that hated her for what she was couldnât deny her talent nor skill. Though even as she began making a name for herself, she continued going home, picking up after her father, and working in the lighthouse every summer. Â
Just prior to graduation, she was offered an opportunity to try out for the Pride of Portree where she made starting chaser straight out of Hogwarts. She played for the Pride for three years before being offered a position with the Holyhead Harpies, and while the contract earned slightly less, she took it for the opportunity to live near her father to better be able to care for him. Â
She was a Quidditch player by day and a caretaker by night for five years before Garret succumbed to his age and his injuries. She went through a rough time then, drinking and womanizing her way through players and fans alike until the lifestyle ended with a pair of bludgers to the back while playing the Magpies, shattering her spine, shoulderblade, and tearing all of the connective tissue in her left shoulder and elbow. While St. Mungos could fix most of it, the nerve damage in her left arm was too great to continue competing at the professional level, so she found herself medically retired and unemployed. Â
PRESENT TIME
Dumbledore was her saving grace, offering her the newly open position of Flying Instructor with the understanding she would also fill the role of Quidditch officiant on game days. And while it wasnât her dream, she was still connected to the skies and given a home once again. Albeit, with the explicit understanding that the drinking and womanizing was to stop, for she was now a member of Hogwarts staff and would be expected to live up to everything that entailed.
