Naruto really will go off sometimes and make the most interesting and beautiful side characters in the world.
Do any of you know who this is?
This is Pakura of the Sand. She comes in one stand alone episode, brings with her an entire interesting history, lore and represents the themes of Naruto in a way that is so complex and interesting that she lives in my mind rent free.
Her story is that she was a powerful shibobi from the Land of Wind, known far and wide as The Hero of the Sand. She was born with a powerful kekkei genkai called scorch release. A combination of wind and fire nature that was so hot it MELTED THE FLESH OFF ONES BONES AND IMCERATED THE BODY INSTANTLY.
That is debatedly, stronger than the Uchiha's Amaterasu which although never stop burning, are not nearly as hot and you can survive after it touches you, so long as you destroy the limb that caught fire, or live ling enough to have the flames doused by the weilder, where Pakura's is a one shot kill.
Anyways she has been brought back to life during the forth shibobi war, in order to fight for Kabuto and like most people she has been allowed to keep her mind when she's first revived. And upon this happening, she is elated. Because can get revenge, not on enemy shinobi, not on a specific person, but on the Sand Village personally.
This is discovered when she runs into one of her students, and decides to catch up with her before she murders her. For you see, as mentioned Pakura was once hailed as a great hero of the Sand Village. A powerful ninja who was deeply respected, and one of their best weapons. However, during the 3rd shibobi war she went missing and was slain in battle. Eventually the village says she was ambushed by Stone shibobi, and therefore they had to attack them in turn.
But this was a lie, a cover up by the village elders. They had apparently asked her to go to the Village Hidden in the Mist as a peace envoy, but this was a trap. In truth they wanted to make a deal with the Mist to gain an alliance, but to do so, the Mist said they must sacrifice her to get their loyalty.
So when she arrives, she is stabbed in the back by the one who greets her, literally. And then she is told of the deceit and that even with the village sacrificing her, there will be no alliance, and her village turned her into fodder for nothing.
So upon returning to the world of the living, Pakura is not a fan of this and as such, has no problem with burning the shinobi world to the ground, literally. Her greatest attack becomes creating a GIANT spear of her scorch release, with her inside it, and burning everything within a mile's radius with her inside, leaving even the ground dead, covered in white ash.
A great metaphor for her own pain, and what she thinks of the shinobi system. That it should be destroyed for its crimes.
However, her student as mentioned earlier, was able to survive the bomb with her own technique. And after being congratulated for managing to not due by her former master, she is then assisted by members of the Shibobi allience. Together, they work together to barely evade her attacks, while trying talk her down. Acknowledging her pain, but also showing that the world can change. That yes she was betrayed and it was covered up and nothing will ever make that right... but the world is changing. Alliances are being made, they now have a Kazekage who would sacrifice his life to save the village, even at the expense of himself. That the old guard was dead and its its place they were fighting for connection and peace. Her student teams up with shinobi from Iwa, the mist, and the leaf, and together though they can not defeat her at all, they are showcasing with both words and actions, that the world is indeed changing. And it can be better...
However, during this talk no jutsu, another undead shinobi shows up, and wants to team up and kill her student and her teammates, and Pakura...chooses to save them by burning that ninja alive, and starts to burn up herself and the shinobi, hiving her student time to escape.
In the end, Kabuto turns off her mind, like he does to all shibobi who disobey his commands. But before he manages to suceed, Pakura is smiling. Choosing to trust her student and the next generation, and is at peace as she can be before her sentience is gone.
THIS I think, is top tier in Naruto writing, character designs, and themes of the story. That the new generation inherited a mess from the previous ones, and how calloused and short sighted previous leaders were when regarding their shinobi. Pakura was a queen, but they sacrificed her like a pawn. Her story is so tragic and had she survived, she probably would have easily become a high ranking Akatsuki member. But sadly she died and in her vengeance sought to destroy the world.
But then she meets a student, someone she loves who can remind her who she was, how she still sees her, and even after all the things she did she is validated and still loved. She dies again a hero...
Also she's the most beautiful woman I have EVER SEEN!
Me: *starting Castlevania again* Wow, it's a shame this series is only 4 minutes and 43 seconds long. I would have loved to see the adventures of Lisa and her spooky room mate Dracula.
After his secret is revealed to his family, Dai's life gets harder. Unlike last time, he's bigger, older, and far stronger than he used to be. When his father tried to physically discipline him, Dai just grabs the hand in mid air, showing the absolute difference between their strength, and the fruits of his labour. He doesn't hurt him. He would never strike his father, he loves his family. But he refuses to let him hurt him wither, and Dai refuses to back down on his dream like last time.
Now that his secrets are out in the open, Dai starts actively training in broad daylight. He doesn't stop working in the family business, but he no longer hides his weights and strength. He starts leaving early, or when the job is done, where before he would almost always stay over time. He starts running laps around the village and sometimes does challenges, like doing laps on one foot, or doing bunny hops instead of running. He stops helping out at home, since his parents keep starting fights over his choices, and instead hangs out in his favourite training ground, only returning home to eat and sleep.
His sibling bonds change too. Dai's brother receives his father's full attention for the first time, and when his pride is being stoked, his admiration turns to anger at Dai for potentially ruining their family's name. He can't fathom why Dai is acting out over a fruitless dream and criticizes his older brother like his parents, practically paroting their speaches. With his brother working less, he has to work more and he feels emboldened to say cruel things to his brother. He had always been jelous of Dai and his talent as a carpenter, and now he can tell him the cruel things in his heart and not get any blow back from his parents.
His oldest sister grows further distant, but she always looks at Dai with pity. She knows how stubborn Dai is and how losing Gou devestated him most of all, but she can't help but think he's going to get himself hurt or killed if he keeps trying to be a ninja. She doesn't understand why he would try something so futile. Real ninjas have powers, and he's just a guy who can punch stuff really well. They're not a noble family, heck they're not even from Konoha and he's bringing so much negative attention to himself. She wishes he could just swallow his pride and give up on such things, if only for his own benefit.
His youngest sister's reaction hurt Dai the most. When it was just she who knew his secret, she had been so supportive and happy for him. But when the family turned on him, and kept saying such cruel words, her perceptive started changing. If something could make their family so mad and angry, if their mommy kept crying every night and her daddy kept either yelling or stewering in silence, than maybe Dai's dream wasn't as noble as she thought. When it came out she knew, her parents yelled at her for keeping secrets, and she put a lot of distance between herself and Dai, in order to avoid fighting. She even asked Dai to stop, so their family could be happy again. Yes his training saved her once, but if it was hurting them all now, than it was better he stop.
After hearing that, Dai ran off to blow off steam in the training grounds. He punched a log until it split in two! Finally accessing the gate's powers again after all this time, and collapsing on his back, taking deep breaths as he caught his breath on the grass.
It was then he heard a slow clap. And turning around, he saw an old man, praising his efforts.
It was the Professor, also known as Hiruzen Sarutobi. The third Hokage...
Dai wasn't born in the Hidden Leaf Village. His features are so unique to Konoha, the thick hair, prominent nose, thicker/ taller stature, higher amounts of facial and body hair, that I think he was born closer to the Land of Earth, instead of the Land of Fire. Maybe born somewhere along the border.
However he's a man who lived through two of the great shinobi wars. I think his village was destroyed near the end of the first great shinobi war, and due to needing more citizens/tradesmen after all the death from the world war, his family/ other conquered villages were recruited and moved to Konoha, in order to regain the numbers they lost.
It was here Dai learned about ninjutsu, ninjas, and the school they had in place to train young people. And this is when he started his path to trying to enter the academy...and was quickly ignored and ridiculed for his attempts, as they found out quickly that he could not use ninjutsu and/or genjutsu.
However, Dai is no quitter. And he started his journey to become a taijutsu master on his own at the ripe age of 10.

So, last we left off, Dai met Fugaku and was brought in for questioning. Especially after accidentally starting a fight with the police.
Dai's nervous throughout the questioning, but more due to the fact he accidentally hurt some officers then anything he did. After the books and his history at the library is brought up however, he is quick to bring up why he is doing all this, that he wishes to become a ninja and protect the village, just like Fugaku himself and the rest of the village. He wants to do more then just carpentry, he wants to follow his dreams, with or without the use of ninjutsu!
Fugaku is taken aback by this and thrown off by Dai's earnestness, but after some more probing and seeing the evidence pair up with Dai's story, he agrees to let him go after the day and is willing to even sweep the scuffel with police under the mat, so long as Dai tells no one and doesn't do so again, something Gai is quick to agree to. The reason he tells Dai, is to not ignite violence and unrest against the village. As someone wanting to be a ninja for noble reasons, of course he wouldn't want to create trouble in Konoha.
But the REAL reason, is Dai gave some members of the Uchiha clan real trouble fighting him. To maintain their image of a powerful clan, he doesn't want it known that a mere civilian without any access to his chakra network, caused an actual struggle to the clan. The Uchiha's are having enough trouble with their image in Konoha, they can't have incidents like this making them seem like a joke.
Still, word does get out about Dai's stint in jail, and his efforts to become a ninja are revealed not just to the village, but to his family. His father and mother become furious at him for lying, and for damaging their family name by being arrested. They are once again going to be laughed at and the mother, father, and brother all admonished Dai for what he did. But unlike last time, Dai is older now, and he fights back. Saying they can not stop him from his dream and their is nothing shameful about pursuing ones passions.
While all this is happening, Hiruzen, the Third Hokage, gets handed a report by Fugaku. And upon reading over the report and asking his opinions about Dai, gets an idea...

Which makes me think about Hero Kakashi meeting hot worker Gai in the village, and while he has countless people swooning over him his eyes are set on Gai
Gai is the only one he wants and he’s throwing everything he can think of into wooing him
which ends up being easier than he thought.
Gifts, flirting, playing around. None of it means much to Gai
But working his butt off at the blacksmith surrounded by heat and dripping in sweat? One look at THAT Kakashi, and Gai’s heart is done for
Would Gai maybe be a miller? Making grain all day and his window faces the blacksmith stall so he can enjoy the view as he grinds the wheat and packs the flour. He's often seen covered in powder so when he washes off at the end of the day, Kakashi also gets a view~
I've seen a post for a while now, claiming Gai is suicidal. That he romanticizes his death at the hands of his own technique, and he's been looking for a chance to finally activate them.
And something feels... wrong about that statement.
On the one hand, I feel like there was a time that WAS correct. After his father's death, there is a time Gai seems reckless. Where he's both trying to prove himself and live up to his father's sacrifice. During this time, I think Gai was dealing with grief.
But that was curved by Kakashi's involvement. A reminder that he doesn't have to give up his life for it to be meaningful. And to respect his father's sacrifice. That his life has meaning, and so does his youth. It takes some time and another demonstration of Kakashi risking it all to save him, but eventually Gai's will to live is revitalized and he and Kakashi move forward together.
The next time we see clues of Gai being suicidal, is after he hears about Lee's legs diagnosis. After this, he is there for each of Lee's healing steps. Helping him to find ways to train, heal and keep his hopes up.
When Tsunade comes to town, Lee becomes the third person she sees, and Gai is so excited for her to tell him there's a way...only for both Lee and Gai to get the most devastating news. That Lee's life of a ninja is over. The only surgery she could do, has a 50% mortality rate, and that it might not work even after. This is Lee's darkest moment, and he's scared to face it alone... and so, Gai decides to do the one of tge most controversial things he could have...
He says he'll die if with Lee if the surgery fails.
On the one hand, this showcases how much he believes in Lee and Tsunade. That he will put his life on the line to push Lee to get him to do the one thing that will help him fullfill his dreams. Without it, Lee could live a civilian life without being a ninja...but he would be miserable until the end of time, and Gai knows this.
But more importantly to Gai's character, this does show that if anything more happened to Lee, Gai would not see this world worth living in.
To Gai, Lee is everything he has put his faith and future into. Lee represents many things to him. A connection with his father, the future of Taijutsu, the son he never had, the entire philosophy of "The Springtime of Youth," and if Lee gives up or dies, Gai's whole purpose is over. His techniques can not pass on without Lee.
And more than that... he loves Lee more than anyone. And being one of if not the most emotional character in Naruto, Gai feels far deeply then he thinks. And if he feels that he can not live without Lee, especially since it was his fault that Lee got into that situation in the first place... then he would be suicidal at this time.
Finally the last topic, when Gai finally opens the eight gates.
This is three years later after his and Lee's talks, and Gai is in a completely different place. Throughout all of Naruto Shippuden, we get to see Gai use the gates more frequently, but every gate Gai opened, was calculated. Never once pushing himself past a gate he thought he needed, even though he started to use them back to back. In the war Neji is killed, and even then Gai keeps his head and stays focused in battle.
However there comes a point where there is no other option. Naruto and Sasuke are down and as is a vast amount of the army. Their opponent is immune to ninjutsu and genjutsu, their team work has failed and most of the revived Hokages are now broken and almost obsolete.
And here... under these conditions, Gai suggests the last thing they have... him, and the eight gates
At this point, Gai has tried everything else. Up to the 7th gate just moments earlier. There is no other option and if he does not do this... then everyone else he knows and loves, will die. All the things and people and villages, will be destroyed. And in its place a mad god and a tree will be all that remains.
In this moment... Gai is not suicidal. He did exhausted all other options. One could even argue that had he not waited and done this earlier, they would not be in such dire straights, and he could have killed Madara earlier when he was less powerful.
But Gai did wait. He fought, and he collaborated with everyone in order to see tomorrow. He wanted to live and stay beside Kakashi to help him after seeing Obito. He wanted to be there for Lee and Tenten to celebrate the victory and mourn with them when they buried Neji. He wanted to see the world grow and bloom into another springtime...
But sometimes things are out of our control...and threats are too strong to hold back... and in order to defeat a self proclaimed god, you must face them down with the power of a man.
This moment here, was not suicide. It was a sacrifice. Gai had stopped looking for death and wanted to live out his youth, his life with passion. But he chose to end it all, in order for the world to live on.
I think Gai learned in time to have a healthier view on his life. From viewing the gates as an honorable death and romanticizing his end, to understanding it as a true sacrifice, and waiting until every possible outcome was used first. To respect his own youth and life, and to keep this as a last result.
Gai wanted to keep living...and I am forever glad, that he got his wish.
In conclusion, I don't think Gai was suicidal, but he was sacrificial. He lived his life knowing the sacrifices it took to be a ninja, and chose to live them with as much zeal as he could. If anything, he may have romanticized life itself, knowing one day... he might be forced to give it up.

I had a question about something. You often say that things probably would have been better if Gai replaced Obito in team Minato, So Kakashi, Rin, and Gai were on the same team. And I whole heartedly agree.
But I was wondering how that would effect the Kannabi bridge mission, specifically when Rin is kidnapped.
Because Rin is not kidnapped because of any one of their flaws. 2 stealthy and powerful ninjas are able to get the jump on the group with camouflage jutsu, and nab Rin. That feels like something that could happen no matter who the third person on the team was.
With that in mind, how would the next part play out. Because like Obito, I feel like Gai would demand they save Rin, where Kakashi was stuck in his "follow rules" phase, and want to finish the mission.
So, how would you think this would play out? Would Gai be able to convince Kakashi to go back with him and together save Rin, or would they still end up seperating? Would Gai be more stealthy than Obito and actually get farther saving Rin, and how would Gai and Kakashi handle the camouflage jutsu without a sharingan?
It's a really cool part because unlike Obito I can't see Gai doing the separating bit. I feel like he would convince Kakashi to go back with him and if they do so together, there's a good chance Kakashi will even keep his eye since he's not protecting Obito. (He can lose it another day.)
So I genuinely think Gai would be more understanding to, and listen to Kakashi.
Because Kakashi never said they weren’t going to save Rin. He just wanted to conplete their mission FIRST. And of course there’s Risks that come with that, but I think Gai would be more likely to go with that plan because Rin isn’t his entire world
She’s his friend and he wants her safe, but he also has confidence in Kakashi that when he says they will save her after, they will
Abd where Obito and Kakashi clashed and fought and never truly worked together, Kakashi and Gai do. Because that’s how they are as friends.
They compliment each other’s fighting style and work almost flawlessly together. Separate they’re pretty strong for their ages, but together they’re even better.
Gai and Kakashi would come up with a plan together

And (I think) succeed together. There could still be issues ofc and I still love the idea of Kakashi losing his eye protecting Gai or Rin (just like in Cannon) but I think they’d succeed
And i think if the IWA shinobi still tried to take them all out by caving the place in, Gai Kakashi AND Rin would work together to get out safe. And actually that cave in moment, i thi k, would be when Minato would be called upon
Not by Kakashi (pride too strong) but by Guy who’s probably realize what the Kunai their sensei gave Kakashi was and snatch it up at that terrifying moment and throw it
Thus Minato can still save his team (who’s all together and trapped when he gets there) but he’s not the only reason anything gets truly done on the mission
...wait, I'm sorry I just thought of something. If they go for the bridge, they may never get back to her. Sacrificing Rin for the mission.
Rin had a lot of information, and she wouldn't be able to fight the man trying to interrogate her forever. She has a strong will but there was only so long she could fight them, and she was already struggling. Eventually, he would get inside her head. And they were still 1 days worth of travel away before they could get to the bridge (because they do have to rest that night before they get to the bridge.)
So... if they leave her for the bridge, she may break/ run out of chakra, and then Iwa could send all their troops that were in the area to the bridge, stopping the mission. And if they do make it to the bridge before Rin gives up, then she will not be in that temporary shelter those two Iwa made by the time they get back. And with how smart that one guy was when he was fighting Kakashi, they wouldn't leave a scent trail behind, so Kakashi wouldn't be able to find her.
So in both cases, they will lose Rin. And there is no way of knowing what the Iwa forces will do to her. She may have a higher chance of survival being a medical ninja... but... she is also the student of Minato. The Yellow Flash who killed either dozens or 1000+ of their shinobi, including all those people at the front lines. This means they may take their fury out on her as revenge.
I think Obito although was wrong in his execution (to a point) he was right in to save Rin. Where Kakashi if he is not pushed to go back to save her, will no longer be Kakashi anymore. If he sacrifices Rin for the mission, or she dies/ gets lost, then I think the kindness in Kakashi who believes whole heartedly in not abandoning his friends, will die. He'll push down any feelings even harder if he succeeds at the mission and become a cog in the machine.
So if Gai does not push back and agrees to complete the mission first, then their team will be forever broken. I think Rin, even if she somehow survived and returned to Konoha, even if she understood why Kakashi did it, would never want to be on their team again.
This could also kill the kindness in Gai, who protects his teammates and special people too, and make him a pure cold hearted ninja..
So, i don’t think it’s correct that the kindness in Kakashi or Gai would die if they failed to save Rin.
Kakashi’s kindness survived a lot. His father’s death, Obito’s, Rin using him as a weapon to kill herself, and more.
Yes he would hurt, and it would be a trauma for him if Rin still died and it’s something he would blane himself for (like he does with Obito’s death) but it wouldn’t kill his kindness.
It would cement it
Show him WHY he has to sometimes put his friends before the mission. Because if he doesn’t, he could lose those friends, and while he can pretend he doesn’t care it’s not true
He DOES care. Deeply, and it would be a shift toward wanting to protect them again the way his father did. Understanding why his father made the choice he made.
Same goes for Gai. It would take a LOT to kill that man’s kindness. He’d be upset and blame himself in part for Rin’s death, or loss, but it wouldn’t cement his determination not to make that mistake again and push back against Kakashi or others even harder.
That all being said, neither Obito or Kakashi were completely right or wrong. Obito was justified in his feelings and views, and so was Kakashi.
This is one of many scenarios where nothing done can go right, and you have to make one of two really shitty choices that can (and probably will) end badly
Very true, Kakashi's kindness would probably not change... but I fear his view on missions would be the thing to cement.
Kakashi is used to death at this time. If he succeeds in the mission, but Rin died/ was gone forever, I think there's a part of him that would fully commit to the belief that...he's a tool, that shinobi are not human and must obey to succeed. I worry that Rin dying would make him not WANT to reflect on the matter, and to stop himself from feeling the pain, he'll focus on the positive. "I won. We beat the mission. We can't afford to feel things for our comrades, incase this happens. There was nothing I could have done different in order to succeed."
Obito was right in saving Rin, but was wrong how he approached it...but he did need to find the thing that would change Kakashi's mind. Otherwise, he would not have grown. Would have buried his feelings even deeper and not face his pain.
That's the reason this mission, Obito, and the sharingan meant so much to Kakashi. It's not the act of losing a friend that changed him. It was turning his back on a philosophy, breaking his rules and beliefs out of a strict mindset. A knowledge that if he wasn't pushed to do this, if he wern't so stubborn... that he would still be that 12 old. Rule driven, unempathetic, strict and unreachable. That is how adult Kakashi would see his younger self, and Obito's words and actions breaking through that hard shell.
So if Rin dies here...there is nothing to break the shell. It creates another wall, another layer of pain to hide behind. It closes him off even further from creating meaningful relationships, and seeing his teammates as tools, not people. Not people to get close to lest he lose them again.
Gai would probably be ashamed. Either that he did not fight harder to save her, that he was not fast enough to do both, or even that he listened to Kakashi and believed him when he said "we can do both." After this... I could see it fundamentally changing his faith in Kakashi. Because if it was he who got captured instead of Rin...then he'd be dead. And Kakashi would not come for him...
It's a very harrowing thought that could change the nature of their relationship.
‘What if he learns the importance of teamwork and valuing his friends before or after’
This is a different world. One were Kakashi’s not constantly fighting with one of his teammates and getting singled out as the bad guy for his beliefs right up until kannabi bridge
One where Gai actually learns about Kakashi before, and pays attention to him as a person rather than an obstacle, and tries to be both understanding while getting Kakashi to understand that his father was right
What if Rin and Gai support Kakashi enough for HIM to open up about his father’s death and why he holds his beliefs, instead of Minato having to tell them? And in doing so he opens his heart just enough for Rin and Gai to know why he is the way he is, and to work from there.
Kanabi bridge was a turning point for Kakashi in cannon. It doesn’t HAVE to be in an au. Many different things could happen
Rin could learn that this is a fear of Kakashi’s and decide to break Tsunade’s rules and learn to fight, so when they’re attacked she’s not left behind defenseless and is actually helping Kakashi and Gai, and protecting herself.
Gai could have YEARS to try and push closer to Kakashi and cement the belief that Sakumo was right. That protecting your teammates and friends is important, and shouldn’t be set to the side because some shitty people decided he was wrong.
Kakashi could originally still keep his plan, but as he turns away remmember all the times Gai and Rin had his back and defended him, laughed with him, supported him, and come to his OWN conclusion that he cannot walk away when Rin needs him.
There are hundreds of ways Kakashi could still find his path. Obito is the cannon way he did, but it is not the ONLY way possible.
Yeah that would work. If Kakashi becoming softer and a better person was a gradual process caused by Gai's, Rin's and Minato's combined effort, and the switch with Gai for Obito being more beneficial to Kakashi's mental health and letting him see the faults in his logic easier, then I'm all for it.
There is more than one way to get through to Kakashi. In canon, that had become the only way/ last chance of rescuing himself from the path he was on. But with Gai constantly beside him early on, maybe a newer, better path could have been forged, and Kakashi's views would be challenged on the daily, but in a more fun and healthy way that would cause less strife among the team.
I don't think Gai has a big dick, nor do I think he SHOULD have a big dick.
If anything, his dick should be slightly smaller, 5.0 to 5.4 inches, max.
That said... I still think Gai should be, if not is, one of the best and most explorative lovers in Konoha.
This gay man has NEVER had anything given to him, and it's in his character that he must work hard for everything he does! He's not gifted with natural talent or endowment, but he works hard to deliver every stroke with maximum precision and passion. All to ensure that his lover is pleasured beyond all measure of comprehension!
People with big dicks tend to be lazy! They think just because they have a big Richard, that they can swing it around or stuff it in, and 90% of the work is done! Taijutsu let him do things that would have been impossible otherwise. Graduate early, join a team with Ebisu and Genma, fight as equals or better than almost all his peers. Taijutsu became his passion and life blood, something he would sacrifice anything for.
When he was a young teen it became his dearest eternal rival, Kakashi Hatake. The boy he had chased before his feelings truly bloomed and who was always just out of reach, falling further into darkness each and every day. Gai made it his mission to chase him harder than ever before, to reach out and stop him from sinking too far. But it was so hard to stop the darkness from enveloping his dearest rival fully. And if this bright soul was snuffed out before his time, then Gai saw no point in continuing himself. That was how deep his love ran for this boy.
Life carried on, until he was 29/30. And he died.

In his final battle against a completely forgettable foe, his embers would keep all that he loved well lit and warm ... there was no more regrets to have, except one... he never was able to say what he wanted to, to his third love... but it was too late now..

I think Nattie may become either the BBEG later on, or is raising it in Giggi. "That's right. At the stroke of midnight, I came into this world!" Gai said with a grin and a thumbs up.
"Wow, never met someone who was actually born on January first." Tenten said, hopping over to them. "I guess you never have to worry about having a party."
"That's right. Every year I go through the streets, play games with the festival with my Eternal Rival, and watch the fireworks at the end of the night. It's our honored tradition."
"So amazing!" Lee shouted excitedly. "Gai-sensei! Can we perhaps join you this year?"
"We?" Neji asked, turning back to look at them.
"YES WE! THIS IS OUR FIRST NEW YEARS CELEBRATION WITH GAI SENSEI! WE MUST GO CELEBRATE IT TOGETHER! WHAT COULD BE MORE YOUTHFUL THEN CELEBRATING THE DAY OUR GREAT SENSEI CAME TO BE."

Neji stared at his white kimono and black sash. It was simple, elegant...and reminded him of funeral wear. In the main hall the rest of the branch family and servants were making preparations for tonight's festivities. It would be a grand occasion...
Neji stared at the silk headband in his lap. A formal one that he he could wear instead of his hachimaki for the night. He could already imagine what tonight would look like. He would be surrounded by the hypocrites who killed his father. His uncle, the man who shared his father's face, would stare back at them and use his father's voice to spread his propaganda and vile speeches. His daughters stared foreword, either ignoring Neji or looking at him with their pitiful, weak, eyes.
His hand clenched and the thought of his smiling sensei came to mind. Maito Gai...when he heard he would be their squad captain, he had only negative thoughts about him. He heard of a fool who fought without ninjutsu or genjutsu. Who preached hard work and effort, and who challenged a man with whose bloodline and talents far outranked his. A man with like Gai was someone destined to die, never to accomplish anything or be remembered. It was simply fate...
But then he had met the man, and since then his ideals were... challenged. Gai not only was far stronger than he appeared, but clever too. It had been almost a year since he met the man, and although he was an overly emotional fool... he was also insightful, he taught them all in ways that were both tailored to their specializations, but he also attempted to teach them his secret techniques. Lee had gone from a handicap on their team, to someone who could move faster than Neji could almost block. From a fly he could swat away to a rival that....almost... was a challenged him. (He refused to acknowledge the broken arm he had almost gotten defending the boy's kick.)
Gai sensei was many things. Loud, annoying, obnoxious, kind, encouraging, a little selfish, very egotistical, and always pushing his body to extremes, and all these things Neji was slowly starting to appreciate more than he ever thought he would... although he never voiced it aloud, when Neji looked at Gai sometimes he genuinely questioned...if destiny could be changed.
His hands swept over the silk fabric one more time, clenching it hard briefly...before setting it aside on the mantle. With his head held high, he left his room and started to leave the compound.
"Neji, where are you going?" A servant asked, making him still for a moment.
"My sensie has requested my presence for tonight. I need to leave immediately." He announced. The servant bowed low, saying something about informing the Head, before Neji just continued on his way.

"NEJI! YOU MADE IT!!!" Lee shouted upon seeing him. The boy hadn't even changed his outfit for the occasion.
"You're looking good Neji!" Tenten said with a grin. Her usual space buns were covered by white and pink fabric, and she wore a simularpibk flowery kimono. It was nice that one of his teammates knew how to properly dress themselves.
"Looking for his Rival." Tenten Sighed deeply. "Apparently that Kakashi guy is always late to everything. He's probably going to infect our sensei with his tardy ass."
"NONSENSE!" Lee shouted. "Gai sensei will definitely drag Mr. Kakashi here with all his might! He'll make sure the both of them show up on time, OR EVEN EARLY. NEJI! CAN YOU SEE HIM."
"I'm not wasting my Byakugon on that." Neji sighed. Crossing his arms in front of him... still, of their Sensei truly did end up late, he'd be checking in on the man to make sure he was at least coming.
They didn't have to wait long after all however, as Gai came in, holding hands with his grey haired rival.
"OH THERE'S MY KIDS! COME ON KAKASHI!!!"
"Right right." The other sighed.
"Really Sensei? Hand holding, at your age?" Tenten asked, looking their sensei up and down unamused.
"OF COURSE!!!" Lee shouted. "HOW ELSE WAS HE EXPECTED TO ENSURE HIS FRIEND MADE IT ON TIME."
"Oi..." Kakashi muttered tiredly.
"Lee. That is not the true reason." Gais said gravely, before thrusting their hands in the air. "THE TRUTH IS, ONE IS NEVER TOO OLD TO HOLD THE HAND OF THEIR BELOVED RIVAL!!!"
"Gai..." Kakashi just covered his face with his hand briefly, before noticing Neji. "Oh. Looks like all three made it after all."
"Hmm?" Gai finally looked right at Neji. At first he looked surprised, before an open grin spread across his entire face. "Neji! It's good to see you!"
Neji nodded at the strange man in front of them. He would probably never understand this man... but he did appreciate him. And celebrating his birthday with his team and the weirdo with a hidden face, sounded better then spending a second celebrating new years with his disgusting clan.
Instead of saying any of that however, Neji just asked:
"So, what games kind of games do two grown ass men play at these things?"
Gai grinned, ruffling his hair before pointing ahead. "WE'LL START HOW WE ALWAYS DO. RIVAL, TO THE GOLD FISH SCOOP!!!"
"Fine fine." Kakashi said, before being dragged off into the night. Behind them, Neji and his team ran after them.

It was a few hours later that the four had made their way to the roof tops as they waited for the fireworks. Lee was eating a curry bun while Tenten ate some dragon's beard candy. Kakashi, was sitting a bit away from them, covered in giant stuffed animals and holding a goldfish that Gai had won for him.
"Neji," Gai said, coming to sit beside him briefly. "I want you to know, that I know going against your clan's wishes to be here tonight, was big of you. And I'll never forget it. Thank you for being here Neji."
Neji was quiet for a moment, looking up at his sensei. It wasn't easy, being here... but it did feel right.
"Don't worry. If they bring it up, I already blamed the whole thing on you."
"Hah! I'll happily take responsibility then." Gai laughed, patting him on the shoulder. "If you ever need a reason to leave your clan's activities, just tell me and I'll ensure you have a reason to miss it."
Neji blinked at that in surprise, but his sensei just gave him another grin with a thumbs up, before walking over to sit beside his "eternal rival" again, placing his hand on top of the other's man as they talked about the upcoming fireworks.
His sensie truly was a polarizing man... however, as the crowd started the countdown, and fireworks started to light the sky with flames, Neji couldn't help but appreciate the man, and look forward to his time being under his sensei's wing.
Hopefully, he thought, this would be only the first of many birthdays he'd get to celebrate with his team...
