I have this headcanon that Grace knows how to use a gun, but hates it.
Maybe his dather took him to hunt, maybe in one of the AU Court or Colt taught him. However, the point is that he knows.
The scene that has been playing in my mind is that maybe the scientists on the Project Hail Mary were took hostage, or have been attack for people against the project, or people than do not believe in climate change or that the sun is dying. Stratt it is there too, maybe caught as a hostage too, or just was involved will trying solve the problem (and if you are a movie universe beliver then Carl can be there too).
Someone points a gun to her, or at one of the scientists and then she hears a shot and she has to take a moment to understand that she hasn't been shot, but the attacker is bleeding from a no vital part (maybe their hand that was carrying the gun, maybe an arm or a leg, a disarming point). Then Stratt turns in the direction of the shot and finds Grace, who somehow was able to steal a gun from another of the assailants.
He has a strong grip in the gun, a coldness and seriousness in his face and stand that he had never got before, and a glare of such focus that is intimidating. However, that version of him dissapears quickly, his eyes fill with tears and he has to run to one of the trash cans to throw everything he had in his stomach.
Grace knowing how to use a gun, and even having a good aim, but crying every time he shots.
When Rocky and Grace exchange info about each other worlds, in some point they mention wars and weapons that had marked their cultures, and while Rocky explains sonic weapons designed to disorient other Eridians, Grace goes for Yáo's gun and explains Rocky how to disassemble it, assamble it and use it.
When Grace gets to meet a bloody man that seems to have gone to hell and back, he wcould have bring the gun with him, just in case, because you never know, and in a very bad first meeting, Grace could have meet Simon by threating him with a gun, or when Simon had jumped over Grace to attacked him Grace could have put a bullet in his shoulder.
