The same thing happens with Choal and Aelin in Queen of Shadows. When she comes back from Wendlyn, he finds out that while he was knowingly committing treason against the country and his friend, while he was investigating magic, which is literally illegal, and had to watch Sorscha beheaded, Aedion imprisoned, and Dorian exposing his magic in front of his father and then had been forced to run, Aelin had been off playing magic school with a faerie prince. Obviously, you, the reader, know that this is completely untrue and unfair, but Choal doesn't since he can't see inside Aelin's head. He is doing what he believes is best and he does act like an asshole, but only because he can't see the full picture, which is a product of him being a character in the story and not a reader who can see everyone's perspective and knows the full truth. Once he does realize how wrong he was, he apologizes to Aelin and he helps her, because he can now see that she was right.
