"Now then..." Chris started, as he opened the door leading into a large dining room. He bowed slightly, and brought his hand out in front of the door as a gentle gesture to direct his guest.
"Would you care to join me for tea?" he asked excitedly.

"I said it seemed nice. Youâre the one who went in."
"You...!" Chris stopped, correcting himself. "I... thought it might've been warm."
"You were the one that jumped in!"
Chris paused, trying to think of something to respond with. He couldn't really argue, as she hadn't said anything exactly incorrect. "...Yes, I did."Â
"Testing your common sense, I guess."
"Even when someone says itâs warm, you donât jump right off of the dock. You test the waters."
Chris furrowed his brow at the statement, but before he could respond, he thought that perhaps it would be better to try and take his advice to heart, rather than to brush it off. Even if it had been a rather rude way of advising.
"...Yes, that-Â that is an excellent point. Thank you."
"Itâs that cold and yet youâre going back in? Are you trying to catch your death?â
"But of course! So as long as I have someone to join me."
Chris smiled and held offered his hand. "Come on then, it wasn't so incredibly bad."

"Hey calm down. Itâs just cold water, itâs nothing to get angry about."
"You need a sense of humor."
Chris caught himself, suddenly worried that he'd overstepped his bounds and had been rude.Â
"You're right, I am sorry. I'm not angry, just..." Chris paused to wipe some water from his face "...cold."
"N-not necessarily, no," replied Doyle warily. He shrunk backwards eyeing him carefully, scared but mostly resigned. Even if he hadnât meant to, what heâd done hadnât been nice.
Chris moved forward, about to throw water all over Doyle, before stopping, smiling, and setting the glass down.Â
"Ah but it wouldn't do to sink to your level, now would it?" Chris asked in a very joking tone.
It seemed warm to me, your highness.
Chris smiled a bit.Â
"Perhaps you might like to jump in and check for yourself?"Â
"I canât believe you fell for it."
There was a sense of defeat and sadness in Chris' voice. "What purpose did this serve?"Â
"Guess I was wrong."
Chris stared at Pete for a moment before shouting a very sarcastic and mocking "OOPS!"Â

"Youâd said it would be warm!"Â
"I thought maybe it would be⌠Um. SorryâŚ"
"Perhaps now it would be best to even the tides, then?" Chris asked rhetorically, preparing himself to dump a glass of water onto Doyle.Â
"Youâd said it would be warm!"Â
"No I didnât. You asked if it was cold and I said see for yourself. I fail to see how this is my fault.â
Chris climbed out of the small freezing river, wiping his face clean from ice-water. "At the very least you could have..."Â
...
"No, you are correct, this is my fault entirely." Chris said as he silently crept backwards towards the river.Â
"I did not!"
"Well you certainly did not warn that my entire person would be covered in ice-water!"
Elena found his standoffish behavior worrisome. She was amazed at how quickly he put up his facade. She set down her laundry basket and took a seat. âLet me know if Iâm speaking out of turn, but Iâm used to dealing with worried royalty, and I can recognize someone hiding their troubles from a mile away.â
She took a deep breath and took a strand of her hair and twirled it between her fingers out of habit. He is going to be my brother in lawâŚin a way. I should be able to talk to him. âIâm just a maid but I have a killer set of ears, if you want to put them to use.â
Chris chuckled nervously at her offer, still refusing to even look up at her if he could help it. He directed his comments to the nearest wall instead. After all, he couldn't look at the floor, could he? Kings did not look at floors. But then, they weren't afraid to look their own subjects in the eyes, either.Â
This only made Chris more anxious.Â
He tried to stand up straight and put on an air of self-confidence, despite his nagging nervousness. "And what, pray, would I use them for?"Â
"Well, Iâve been forced to do things that I didnât want to doâŚbut it wasnât for everyone around me. I still donât think  that it shouldâve happened, but there was nothing I could do about it." She sighed. "Frankly, Iâm terrible at it, but I get by." Anna paused. "Why?"
Ignoring her second question, Chris continued and asked another of his own. "So, if there was nothing you could do about it, do you think it would be alright to still be very nervous about it?"Â
Chris paused, looking down into his hands again, as if they actually held something. "I apologize, I know these are rather odd questions. You've no need to actually answer them, but thank you for speaking with me either way."

Izzy seemed a little amused as she watched him get nervous, but waved it off. âDonât worry about it.â She said, hoping itâd calm him. âItâs not that big of a deal.â She pondered over his words, her lips pursing as she thought of what to say.
"Donât get offended." She started. "I think that familial bonds are very important yes, but when youâre of royalty and in such a high position of powerâŚ.itâs really difficult to pick between your family and yourâŚsubjects." She shrugged, casting her eyes to the ground. "Family ties are just as important as your relationship with your subjects. You canât really choose between one or the other. A king does whatâs best for his people, a man does whatâs best for his family." She looked at him and offered a small smile to him. "I think a good king would see his subjects as family. Heâd want the best for his people because his family are part of the people."
Chris' entire expression rose, and he cracked a small smile. He was surprised by Izzy's advice, and by how much she actually seemed to care. He wasn't sure about Izzy's point of view on the matter, but Chris felt as though their relationship had just advanced significantly. Truly, it warmed Chris' heart. And her words were right, as well.Â
Suddenly, it was as if Chris' nervousness about being king, though still very much existent, seemed to lighten a little. He looked up at her, no longer afraid to make eye contact. He had very little to say, but he hoped that it would get his message, that he felt both gratitude and a new spark of platonic love, across.Â
"Thank you, Izzy."Â He even managed to laugh a little bit through his growing smile.Â
"You'd said it would be warm!"Â
