Charleston as a Classroom

The cathedral and the archives were an interesting trip. Being Catholic, it was exciting because I got to see places I normally wouldn’t get to see when I attend mass. Like where they get ready for mass and where the bishops are buried. It is a beautiful cathedral with many stained glass windows and high ceilings.  

35 Chapel street was like going back in time. It was a beautifully restored home with a rich history. The lady who lived there first was a free woman of color. Given the land by a plantation owner who lived behind the property. It is thought he fathered one of her children. She was a true entrepreneur and ran a laundry business from her home. she even owned slaves. 

The cemetery was my favorite place so far. I learned a lot about Jewish life and the history if the people in the cemetery. I found the really interesting how they use pebbles instead of flowers. it was really beautiful how all the graves were so different and how they displayed. The stone work and iron work was really intricate and interesting. My favorite part was the ghost stories that came along with the tour.

The Huguenots moved here from France to escape religious persecution. Charleston was the gateway for the Huguenots into the US and while a lot moved away, there is a big community that stayed in Charleston. Most lived by king and queen st. off Broad. The pink church is the only French protestant church that never converted into Anglican, which a lot did because they would have their expenses paid for.

Grimke House and Old City Jail

This photo was taken at the Old Exchange and it really stood out to me because he was from London. This interested me because I studied abroad in London my first semester.  

The most interesting part about the Old Slave Mart trip was being able to see and hold original paperwork from buying and selling slaves. Looking at the range of ages, it amazes me there are newborn babies that have no idea what is coming for them in the future. This was a great experience and I highly recommend this is something everyone needs to learn about.
