He desires freedom, action, choice, feeling suffocated in his uncompromising role with his overbearing parents. besides, there's something dark, too, at work deep in his soul, something he fears. he has it, he believes, from his father ā perhaps it is madness, perhaps it is something else, but whatever it is, it stalks his every motion unless, indeed, he can outrun it long enough that, even for a moment, he half-forgets to feel its clawing fingers beneath his skinā¦
VIRTUES : charles is cheerful, brilliant, open-minded. were he able to sit still long enough, his mother often tells him, he might make something wonderful of himself. boasting an artist's talent and a poet's soul, he can see the beauty in most everything, often pausing to bask in a sunset, or consider the quality of mercy. there's a sorrow, deep in him, but its no less beautiful than it is melancholy, and the prince, in his way, savors it as the best part of himself. yet, a true adventurer at heart, he longs for nothing so much as the sea, and a great voyage of exploratio ā to see all that lies beyond the next shore, and bask in the hope of finding new ways of thinking and kinds of art. he lives, often in the realm of ideas, meditating frequently on better ways to appreciate this beautiful world in which we live, and make better the lives of those who live upon it. if he could ever sit still long enoughā¦

Biographical Information
the firstborn son of the king and queen, charles was blessed with a healthy constitution from the start
wide-eyed and intelligent, he quickly proved himself intellectually quite capable to his rigorous tutors
he was described from his earliest days as quick-witted, charming, witty, and talented, and received a stellar education as well as showing an aptitude for the arts and languages, and love of culture
life was always a touch stringent, however
eager to avoid the royal excesses that had let to the revolution in france, his parents insisted on a strict, well-regulated life
despite being a prince, charles ate gruel as often as not, because it was considered healthy, and slept in a drafty room on a slender cot, because it was thought good for him, and rarely allowed outside the high palace walls, for his own safety, like a lion in a cage
his father enforced a rigorous educational routine under tutors, which included classical studies, religion, law, and politics, but the king believed in using corporal punishment for academic failings, creating a strained relationship
as he entered his late teens and early twenties, charles rebelled against his restrictive upbringing by leading an extravagant, costly, and scandalous lifestyle, characterized by gambling, sex, horseracing, and drinking, which created severe friction with his parents
at eighteen, charles was given his own establishment at carlton house, (which he soon began rennovating to meet his own standards,) to begin learning the trade of all leaders, by running something himself
immediately, in dramatic contrast to his prosaic, scandal-free father, threw himself with zest into a life of dissipation and extravagance of heavy drinking, numerous mistresses, and wild escapades
as he grew into adulthood, he became a patron of new and innovative styles of leisure and excitement, as well as those of style and taste, commissioning art and having buildings put up to suit his tastes as oposed to those of his parents which he considered stodgy and restrictive
charles is a bit of a larsonist, at 21, convinced parliament to grant him moneys well exceeding the income he already drew from both is father and his own estates and titles, making him a staggeringly wealthy gentleman, in his own right, yet he still often found himself outpacing his income
as he first began to show himself in society, charles gained a great deal of popularity for his innovations, his charm, and his cultured mindset, giving voice to a new generation
nonetheless, he would ultimately face criticism and a decline in popularity for his penchant for scandal and excess, going from being hailed as an advocate and visionary, to being decried as selfish and unreliable
as his profligate lifestyle and radical political views became harder to conceal, out and out animosity began to overtake his relationship with his famously conservative father
hoping to steady him in his indulgences, his parents attempted many restrictive plans, but ultimately opted for the stabilizing influence of a wife, particularly after his affair with a woman who was deemed wildly unsuitable, came to light
the prince wished to marry her and, utterly refused by his father, in a fit of passionate rebellion, charles illegally wed her in a church ceremony, despite the fact that legally no prince or princess could wed without the monarch's consent, making the marriage illegitimate legally, though solid religiously
the entire thing was kept secret while his father and the church rattled away at one another, privately, till, at last, it was leaked to the public, nearly causing immense scandal
acting swiftly, charles' allies in parliament condemned this rumored marriage as a vile calumny to protect charles, and prevent further friction between the faith and the law, but also forcing charles' hand in separating from her as his wife, leading to a public outcry on the prince's behalf, abouthow terribly his reputation had been maligned
charles received money, then, from the king, to pay off his debts, and more to further refurbish carlton house
defeated, charles turned his focus to other pursuits, such as horseracing, particularly focusing on the hopes of his favorite horse, escape, and drinking, beginning to return to his old scandalous lifestyle
believing, still, with is wife that a true wife could forestall his extravagances, the king leveraged the prince's debts, forcing him to agree to a new marriage, this time of the queen's arranging
the lady was to be caroline alderidge, the daughter of the marquess of elingwood, a woman of even temperament which, the queen hoped, would soften the prince's jagged edges
unable to put up another fight on the matter, charles relented and agreed to wed her
at first, their marriage proceeded well, the two managing to balance one another's personalities quite well, and soon the new princess of wales conceived
tragically, however, she miscarried
the loss shattered the newlywed couple and, according to rumor, the prince is slowly returning to his profligate ways
whispers suggest that he has taken a new mistress, and even that the queen, herself, once caught the two scandalous lovers abed together
the prince's reputation is now blacker than ever ā will he ever be able to recover it? or his peace of mind?
