didn't pay much attention to the background because I'm incredibly lazy, and I wasn't sure about the colors, so I hope it doesn't look out of place. I wanted a summery feel, so I changed Michael's clothes.
While working on this comic, I realized that hide-and-seek is played differently in different places, and I assumed everyone played it the same way 😅, so I had to add an explanation based on how I usually played it. Anyway, I hope you like my work and enjoy the story of Michael trying to kiss firefly. That's all :3

Hello fireflies!!!
First of all, I'd like to say to everyone thank you so so much for continuing to support me despite the absence of any updates recently. I know it's been slow going for a few months now and I truly apologize for the lack of posts.
To put it briefly, I'm currently down to my last written prompt I need to finish before implementing them into Ren'Py to consider these commissions done. It'll be a good time to get used to coding in my scripts again! 🎮
But, more importantly, afterwards I'll be able to start working on the game once more after such a long break! I'm looking forward to writing again after stepping away and getting even more ideas so the story unfolds more organically in a way I hope feels better than my drafts!
Alongside dev work, I'll also be opening VGen commissions and an ACGoods Store to hopefully continue supporting myself as I keep going! I'll be limiting myself to one commission at a time moving forward, realizing my limitations and abilities now since opening Deer tier sketches for my Patreon two years ago hahaha. I plan to add more commission types and merch designs in the future, but that will be second priority!

I drew a little comic ! Yay! I was too lazy to deal with backgrounds, so I pretended to be doing it by framing the scenes in tree colors.
Anyway, for those interested, the type of bird that appears in the comic is a woodpecker. It's a very cute bird. It's introverted and reserved, and it's also quiet and territorial. Does that remind you of anyone? But I've also heard that when a male tries to get close to a female, he follows her among the trees, makes soft calls, offers food, or shows her nesting places in tree cavities. Once they mate, they become a quiet team that might forage near each other, defend their territory together, and raise their young cooperatively. They live a peaceful life in the forest. It was fun using it to expose Michael's ideas, hehehe. Anyway, I hope you like it.

mychael always preferred the solitude of the forest.
nobody ever really came in, and if they did, they rarely go that deep into where he lives.
it’s better that way. better to not interact with people that would definitely judge him.
some people would rather not have the ability to read minds, wanting to stay blissfully unaware of what people actually think.
but to mychael, it was a blessing to have. that way, he wouldn’t have to worry about spending too much time with useless interactions with a stranger while their mind ran a million miles a minute with every insult to his appearance.
not that it had ever happened. but it’s better to be on guard for when it does.
….he just didn’t expect his first human interaction to be her.
she was the sweetest thing he’s ever met. poor girl was looking for her cat, crying and sniffling when they first met.
he expected the first thoughts in her mind to be something about his skin, his four eyes, his tail.
but he only heard the same words over and over.
‘please let him know where lulu went.’
‘please let my cat be safe.’
‘I hope I find him before it gets dark.’
it was like she didn’t even acknowledge how he looked like, babbling on about her lost pet and not the fact that he was definitely not human.
he just stared at her, assessing her with his eyes. mychael liked to think he’s good at reading people, knowing that subtle tick when someone is ready to pounce.
but her, she was as harmless as a shaking puppy.
he didn’t want to tell her that he did see her cat, just not in the way she wanted to see him.
but he bit his tongue.
the last thing mychael wanted was to have this girl absolutely lose it and breakdown while he awkwardly stared at her.
so, he lied. no, he didn’t see her cat anywhere, he must still be out there somewhere.
he watched her deflate sadly, gripping the backpack strap she wore.
she nodded her head, wiping her wet cheeks and sniffling.
and then, she spoke, “thank you anyway.”
….thank you.
mychael has never been told anything nice. never been told anything that showed gratitude towards him.
his heart squeezes in his chest, watching her turn around and begin walking away.
the voice in her head gets further away, and even then, it wasn’t filled with anything malicious.
‘maybe I should try this way?’
‘or did I already….check that way?’
….okay, she was going to get lost like this.
he didn’t know why he did it, but he calls out to her, beckoning her to follow him back to his cabin so she could rest a bit.
she was the first human he ever let in his life.
it’s been a few days since then, a few days since he has gotten used to her.
her thoughts never changed, mostly filled with worries of her cat.
but there was newer thoughts. about him.
‘he’s so nice, letting me rest here.’
‘I wish I could repay him back.’
‘he’s really cute too.’
he had to come up with a good lie to explain why his face suddenly warmed with blue when he heard that last one.
the way she thought about him, that she didn’t think he was a freak, a monster. how she talked to him like he was the average person.
she had crawled under his skin, breaking barrier after barrier he had put up if a human ever came into contact with him.
mychael didn’t want to lose her. didn’t want the only person who’s ever treated him kindly to leave him.
she had to stay.
she had to.
she was laying down on the grass, listening to the wind blow through the leaves and feeling the sun shine down on her face.
mychael had brought her to a beautiful spot, surrounded by flowers and trees. this was one of his favorite spots, he told her, and she could see why.
he was right next to her, sitting criss cross as he fiddled with a few flowers in his lap, concentrating on the weaving.
it was a comfortable silence they were sitting in, neither of them feeling the need to speak or start a conversation.
it felt….nice.
she takes a deep breath in, exhaling and shutting her eyes.
she’s been here for a few days, with no luck in finding her cat. she feels that sickening feeling in her stomach, knowing that she might never see lulu again.
‘it’s been days’ her inner voice echos in mychael’s head, making him pause his movements next to her.
he didn’t realize that his hands grew increasingly tighter around the stems of the flowers he was holding.
mychael was losing her. she wanted to leave.
he can’t lose her. he can’t. he can’t. he can’t.
he won’t.
“…firefly.” his voice makes her open her eyes, blinking them to adjust back to the brightness of the sun and glancing at him, “hm?” she hummed.
mychael knew this was wrong. he knew he shouldn’t try and convince her to stay when she do obviously wanted to go home.
but her home was away from him.
“I….I just wanted to…thank you.” his voice was a bit awkward at first, glancing downward at the nearly crumpled up flowers in his hands.
he took a deep breath, thinking how to word his next sentence.
she moves to sit, tilting her head a bit, “for what?”
hook.
mychael’s ear twitches, “for….staying this long.” as he talked, he weaved the flowers together, to ease the shaking in his hands.
“I’ve never had anyone who stays this long, usually they’re more focused on, you know-“ he motioned to himself with one hand, “this situation.”
she lets out a soft scoff, a hand going to his shoulder in comfort, “mycheal-“
“it’s true, though.” he continues, his voice ever so even as he speaks, “nobody wants to know how your day has been. not when you don’t look like them,” his tail curls in on itself, “when you look like me.”
he feels the subtle squeeze of his shoulder as he said that, meaning the words are getting to her.
his ear twitches again, a tiny flicker in his eyes when he hears the echos of her mind.
‘poor mychael.’
‘it’s those horrible thoughts again.’
‘I wish he could see that he isn’t a monster.’
mychael ties one last note into the flower stems, “that was, until I met you, firefly.” he said, turning to look at her, the voices stopping as she blinked in surprise.
“you’re the first human who’s ever treated me so kindly.” his fingers awkwardly brush against the petals of the flowers, his heart beating loudly in his ear, “the only one who hasn’t thought of me being a freak, a monster.”
she shook her head, “because you’re not.” she stated, tenderly rubbing his shoulder, “you helped me the first day we met, people who think that don’t know the real you.”
mychael could snort at that. ironic, really, even she didn’t know the real him.
he shook his head, eyes crinkling a bit as dull smile spread to his lips, “what makes you think you know the real me?”
line.
the question catches her off guard a bit, chewing her lip as she tilted her head to think.
he didn’t need to listen in to her thoughts, her eyes told the whole story.
there was no doubt in them, no suggestion that she was ever thought of him as anything other than what she knew he was.
or, rather, what he made sure she did when she thinks of him.
after a moment, a soft smile crosses her lips, “true, but, you’ve been nothing but kind to me since we met.” she pulls her arm back from his shoulder, “nobody would waste their time doing something like that, if they didn’t care.”
mychael doesn’t say anything for a moment, just staring at her with that same unknown look.
‘maybe now’s not the best time to leave.’
‘I’ll stay a little longer, if he lets me.’
‘I don’t want to leave him like this.’
sinker.
the smile on his face softens, a soft chuckle escaping his lips, “you’re so sweet, firefly.” he whispered, holding up the flower crown he had finished making and placing it on top of her head.
he watched her eyes light up, hands reaching up to gently caress the flowers on top of her head.
mychael listens to her talk, a deep sigh leaving his lips as his eyes trace the features of her face. the sunlight highlighted everything, making her look glowing, radiant.
a firefly.
his firefly.
he’s glad she was so sweet.
so nice.
