The trouble with letting people see you at your worst isn’t that they’ll remember; it’s that you’ll remember.

how to properly write an indian character (racebent or not):
INDIA IS DIVERSE. what this should mean to you is that the culture in one state may be very different from the culture in a neighboring state. there are always similarities, but the differences are VERY important.
FOOD. like i said, india is very diverse. the food’s going to be made differently, and the popular foods will vary from state to state and even from town to town, village to village. there’s like 347454578 types of biryani, and not all parts of india like to use a lot of spice or a lot of oil. it all depends, and you need to do your research before you decide what your muse’s favorite indian dish. (the indian restraunts you see in western countries are usually,,, not all that accurate. we don’t eat butter chicken and naans everyday, but god i know some of us wish we did).
LANGUAGE. again, india is very diverse and it has a lot of languages. one of the main problems is that because of how many languages each part of india speaks, it’s hard to connect the country’s people as a whole. that means not everyone speaks hindi. in most cases, a person will speak the common language found in their particular area, and that’ll be their mother tongue. this is especially true in the more southern areas. this means you need to know where your muse’s hometown is or where their parents’ hometown is, or whatever the case may be. (let me clarify: most ppl that went through indian schooling will learn the common language in the area, hindi, and english. but if you’re a first immigrant like myself, sometimes you’ll only focus on one main language rather than two. like i know telugu, but not hindi. it all depends, but make a conscious decision when thinking about this).
RELIGION. not all indians are hindu and muslim. buddhism and jainism have a great following there, and it’s important to choose wisely here. of course, i cannot speak accurately about the latter three religions, but if you choose to have your muse be hindu, please understand that there are sects within hinduism. not everyone practices the same thing. not everyone celebrates the same holidays. do your research.
SOUTH INDIANS VS. NORTH INDIANS. this is VERY, VERY, VERY important topic. south indians and north indians can trace their ancestry to two different groups, so we have very different physical features. the most apparent one is our skin tones. south indians are generally darker. we generally celebrate holidays a little differently, but that can also be due to that person’s religion and their specific sect. marriages are different, foods are made differently. you need to look into the specifics for each particular state.
DO NOT USE LIGHT SKIN INDIAN AESTHETICS FOR SOUTH INDIANS. it is VERY disrespectful, especially taking into account how colorism is very overbearing in india and desi communities. yes there are light skin south indians and dark skin north indians, but please don’t act like you can use light skin aesthetics for a dark skinned indian. the whole problem is that we’re pressured into lightening our skin, and if we don’t, then we’re not desirable/beautiful. it’s takes a toll on all of us, so if you’re not indian, please be wary with the way you go about this. (of course there are exceptions like maybe you see a light skin indian model wearing a traditional outfit that you feel like your muse would wear, then that’s fine! bc the main focus is the clothing, not the model themselves).
DO NOT USE A NORTH INDIAN FACECLAIM FOR YOUR SOUTH INDIAN MUSE. and vice versa. it’s more problematic if you use a north indian fc for your south indian muse because south indians are seen as lower than north indians. the Ideal Indian is what people usually attribute to north indians, (we’re all told to be more like the north indians) so you’re completely supporting the erasure (when you think of india, you usually picture north indian cultures, south indians are grossly underrepresented in western media) and hate of south indians when you choose a north indian fc over a south indian fc for your south indian character.
ESTRANGED FROM THEIR CULTURE. if your muse is more estranged from indian culture, then you need to explain why and what aspects they are separated from. desi communities in western countries will be different from indians actually living in india (as with most immigrant vs native communities). take some time to find some first hand accounts from indians living in the same country your muse is. it’s okay for your muse to be estranged from their culture, it happens to many people of color, not just indians. you just have to take into account how that can affect their confidence in their own heritage and things like that.
CASTE SYSTEM. yes, i understand that it’s literally illegal for discrimination to occur based on caste, but it still happens. it’s like how discrimination based on race still happens in western countries even though it’s usually illegal in that country. frankly, not many young indians take caste into account when they make their friends (but realize that there’s still a lot of discrimination within schools, workplaces, and social areas). the caste system still holds strong when it comes to arranged marriages, but more and more young people are choosing to have inter-caste marriages, something the older generations are wary of.
STEREOTYPES. if you are not indian then it is not your place to reclaim any stereotypes. so stay away from customer service jobs and convenience store owners. of course, if your muse is smart, that’s not necessarily something that always negatively impacts indians, but be careful with the way you word certain things.
it’s very obvious when someone doesn’t do their research, so please, take your time. use multiple sources. take notes. don’t just look on wikipedia for fifteen minutes and say that’s all the info you need. india has many cultures, and many of them overlap. it’s up to you to do the research and understand how all of this affects your muse. (also, this isn’t a comprehensive list, so take that into account when you’re researching).
hi , another local east indian here ! rose hit all the highlights , and i can think of no way to improve them. one thing i’ve noticed with the rpc and indian characters is that people see an indian character wearing beautiful traditional clothing , and it’s usually the reason why they pick that faceclaim. ( examples : aishwariya rai in jodha akbar , priyanka chopra & deepika padukone in bajirao mastani , deepika padukone in padmavaat ). don’t pick a faceclaim just to take those pretty aesthetics and just not say anything about their culture?? don’t pick any faceclaim for the sake of their culture’s aesthetic alone first off…those actresses are playing prominent hindu women. hinduism is already thrown in the gutter by western religions because of the whole christian-centric world view. it’s seen as ridiculous, primitive, and i cannot name an indian who was not called a ‘ monkey worshipper’ or ‘ cow lover ’ or other things said with the intent to insult. you want to use those fancy aesthetics? first you need to understand many of those clothing styles are marriage wear. aka religious wear. those bindis? they’re symbolic. those henna designs? an indian bride of many religions will get that on her wedding day. hell, indians do henna year round for holidays. designers like sabyasachi and manish malhotra who design most of the popular indian clothing you see? yeah most indians don’t get to wear that on a daily basis trust me i wish i could wear that every day but you know money…point is: do not pick up an indian muse because you think the culture is ~* aesthetic *~ AND choose not to do any further commentation on their background. this goes for any faceclaim i mean obviously
we need to talk about jews
howdy people. so in light of nazis being terrible as usual i decided to put together a comprehensive list of things you should not do when using a jewish faceclaim and/or writing a jewish character. bc hey, education is key and really do you want us coming for your ass? (no, you do not. we bite.)
what not to do when using a jewish faceclaim and/or writing a jewish character when you are not jewish:
writing a witch character with a jewish fc is a messy path to go down. jews were often depicted in propaganda as having grassy complexions, and the 1215 fourth council of the lateran required all jews to identify themselves by wearing the judenhat (“jewish hat” or “horned skullcap”).
in 1431, hungarian legal codes required first-time sorcery offenders to walk among their peers in “peaked jews’ caps.” aka the pointy hat we’ve come to associate the stereotypical witch with. if you’re writing a witch character with a jewish faceclaim do not under any circumstances depict them with these stereotypical witch traits.
another thing to avoid is using demonic imagery (horns, cloven hooves, tails, honestly this one is obvious) when using a jewish faceclaim. depicting jews as deformed and satanic has always been a method of oppression for my people.
another obvious one, don’t use a jewish faceclaim to depict a money-hungry/greedy character, especially if your character is also jewish.
nagging jewish mother stereotype. don’t do it.
jewish-american-princess stereotype. don’t do that either.
nice jewish boy is no a lot of the time. think about your portrayal. is his niceness a comment on his masculinity? is he nonthreatening because he is nice or because he is jewish and nice?
jewish lawyer stereotypes. listen i’m all for you writing jewish lawyers but keep in mind we are often portrayed as lawyers in media and writing bc of the association that lawyers are manipulative, greedy, and liars.
the self-hating jew. this concept originated during the mid-nineteenth century when a lot of orthodox jews and reformed jews accused either side of betraying jewish identity. nowadays it’s often used as a tactic to silence jews from commenting or criticizing israel’s actions.
the nice jewish girl. see nice jewish boy except she is a domestic, darkhaired woman who dreams of marrying a nice jewish boy and one day becoming the nagging jewish mother.
a few extra tidbits that don’t involve antisemitism:
not all jews have mothers that are jewish. many of us were raised jewish with jewish fathers and secular mothers. many of our mothers converted (my grandma did)
many jews are not regular practicers, many of us were raised in a culturally jewish environment but were given a choice or not made to go to hebrew school or mitzvah’d. these people still have every right to lay claim to their jewishness. don’t even start.
jewish ≠ zionist. not all jews are zionists and not all zionists are jews. for a lot of us this is a very conflicting, very sensitive subject. so really don’t bring it up if you’re looking to start a fight. we’ll shut your ass down so quick you’ll get whiplash.
not all jews speak yiddish. very rarely do we speak fluent yiddish especially in america. most of the time we simply use phrases and sayings.
if you’re not jewish, don’t use the term jew. we’ve reclaimed that term and for a lot of us it makes us upset bc it’s a method of dehumanizing us.
not all jews are white! many of us are poc. don’t just write white jews.
aaaaand that about covers everything i can remember. i honestly don’t like bringing these hurtful stereotypes up bc i just know some asshole is gonna use it as inspiration. but if anyone has anything to add (preferably if you are also jewish) please feel free to reblog and write them up yourself or im me so i can do it!
the only other icky stereotype i can think of: the loser nerd jewish boy who’s no good at sports or with women / always getting picked on by Alpha Males bc yikes ( while this stereotype is Super Prevalent now / not necessarily jewish-centric anymore it certainly originated as nasty commentary / an addendum to the Nice Jewish Boy TM trope & honestly y’all like enough )
other tidbits:
Not All Ethnic Jews are Ashkenazim, in fact Ashkenazim are like way, way over-represented in media generally ( I say this as Ashkenazi, myself ) so PARTICULARLY if you are writing a Jewish person of color, look into our other ethnicities / be certain that you’re representing your character’s ethnicity / heritage / ancestry in a realistic way
Not All Jewish People Have Been to Israel / Not All Jewish People Want To Visit Israel / Stop Asking Jewish Characters About Israel In General like y’all do know there is more to Jewishness / Judaism right
Keeping Kosher is an Orthodox practice, generally speaking about 20% of American Jews keep Kosher so unless your character was raised very devout Orthodox / chooses later in life to practice that way, it’s not likely that they have / do
My #1 pet peeve finally is Hanukkah Is Not Jewish Christmas, if you plan to write a Jewish character of any kind please, please, please I’m literally legit begging you to skim an article or two about our holidays / holy days because there are A Lot & it kills me to see Jewish characters who are only visibly Jewish for like a week in December
JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE A WRITING A JEWISH MUSE DOES NOT MEAN THAT JEWISH EXPERIENCES BELONG TO YOU, so be respectful of our holy days, of our community / our culture, of our sadnesses & our struggles. Don’t comment on political things that you aren’t educated about Just Because Your Muse is Jewish / don’t feel obligated to reblog positivity posts meant for Jewish bloggers or muns if you yourself aren’t Jewish, etc. Having representation in this community is invaluable to us, but not at the expense of our own safe places, & sometimes the line between being an ally / feeling appropriative is super, super fine. Truly, just be open to receiving constructive criticism !!!!
just to add, because these are Very Big Subjects and a person who is unfamiliar with judaism may feel very at sea… here are some websites, completely free, where you can learn more about judaism and jewish culture.

Never say yes when you mean no, and mean no all of the time.

KAVEH AKBAR POETRY STARTERS.
I can’t pretend I’m not afraid to see you again.
I keep waking up at the bottom of swimming pools.
You’ve always been so charmed by my weaknesses.
Time will break what doesn’t bend — even time. Even you.
Human bones are so full of gravity.
I imagine the sea’s made of actual tears .
Who mourns a rat king?
Always the biter, never the bitten.
The same paradise where dead lab rats go.
I don’t know anyone who would kill anyone for me.
The algorithms for living have always been delicious and hollow.
Like a beetle husk in a spider’s paw.
I wish I was only as cruel as the first time I noticed I was cruel.
Today I’m trying to scowl more.
Watching your beloved sink to the bottom of a lake.
My diseases can become your diseases.
But secretly I will want that very much.
It wasn’t long ago I was brainless lazily pulling fireflies into my teeth.
Nothing was on fire, but fire was on everything.
I never aimed at eloquence.
You grow to love the creatures you create.
His fists were white as gold.
Some men actually love their enemies.
I’ll recognize you by your heartbeat.
Woke the sleeping spider, resting his fangs against my hand.

ain’t that just peachy?
i would follow that girl to the ends of the earth until my feet bled and my lungs burned, and when she turned back to ask if i was tired, i would tell her that all it takes is the sound of her voice to keep me alive
