It was, however, the only thing you cold afford on the limited "generosity" of the university dean. Rook insisted that this was the only thing he wanted from you as a present. It was Vil's idea to dress you up for it, regardless of your protesting. As the pair of you began the journey through the campus, it was only natural that Deuce and Ace spotted you on the way out. Deuce had the sense to keep his mouth shut, not so much on Ace's part, who snickered like a school kid. You craned your neck to turn to glare at him.

"Not a damn word," you seethed before turning your head back to look ahead of you.

Twisted Wonderland was different than your home world in a lot of ways, and yet Christmas, or its equivalent, somehow made its way to this world like an ivy plant sprawling across dimensions. Holly wreaths and big, bright red bows decorated the street lamps. Pine trees festooned with strings of popcorn, glass ornaments, and lights were placed in over a dozen storefront windows. Faint music to lift the spirit and get people in a shopping mood played on public speakers. For a moment, you forget you're not on Earth. That is until you see someone using magic to place a glowing star on top of a tree.

Rook paid for dinner at a cozy bistro that played classical music but didn't feel like an upscale restaurant. The waiter seated you at a booth with a window-view of the street. You listened to Rook talk and ramble as you watched the shoppers go to and fro in the cold. Everything felt nostalgic and otherworldly at the same time. The meal was paired with a cup of warm apple cider for the both of you. The cinnamon made a little tingle in the back of your throat, but it fought the chill running through your core.

Rook rested his hand on his cheek as he just...looked at you. It wasn't an unnerving stare of a hunter, but something more. The look in his eyes was inquisitive. Like he was trying to solve a puzzle. You could hear the gears turning in his head. He took sip of his own cup of cider. The look in his eyes softened and smiled before looking back at you. This new look left more questions than answers. Before the meal even ended, you couldn't help but overhear other customers when Rook paused long enough to actually eat. A couple of women sitting at a table gossiped in hushed tones, but they were close enough for you to hear them.

Rook paid the tab. You tried not to think about those gossipy patrons. You wanted to go home. You weren't talking about Nightraven. You wanted to return to your home world where magic didn't exist. "Would you like to try a bite?" Rook offered a small helping of his tiramisu on his fork.

Lost in your own thoughts, you'd forgotten for a moment where you were and who you were with. One second you weighed the pros and cons of returning home, and the next you were being fed tiramisu by the hot blonde guy with sharp green eyes. At first, Rook's gaze was unnerving. He was perceptive, and annoyingly so. It was like being watched by a hunter. The more time you wound up spending time together, the softer his look became. If there were people in his life outside of family that Rook was obsessed with it would Vil, Niege, and now you, in that order. However, it seemed that slowly you were growing more popular in the ranks. Some nights, you found yourself hosting sleepover and study parties with him. He repaired the Ramshackle dorm, put up new curtains, and even offered better furniture. He bought some clothes with his own money so you wouldn't be stuck with whatever that happened to fit you from the lost and found. Leaving would be like cutting off a piece of you. Could you bring yourself to return to your old world and live with the memory of him and knowing you'd never see his face again. Never meet someone like him. Never hearing his voice for as long as you live.

You could barely touch your own dessert unless Rook fed it to you. His once-unnerving gaze held a peculiar light when he passed the cake from the plate to your mouth, a single bite at a time. Rook paid special attention to your lips when you took the food proffered as if to memorize the shape, color, and how they moved. Something about the look in his eyes started a fire in your lower belly.

You must have been imagining things.

Rook purchased a box of chocolates. You wondered if he meant to buy it for himself or for you, considering how generous he had been towards you on his own birthday. The cab was a silent ride back to campus. Light snow started to fall as you exited the cab and started walking back to Ramshackle. Thankfully, nobody was around to see you walking arm in arm with Rook. You stopped at the gate.

"Well, this is me. I...I hope you had a good time. Sorry that I couldn't get you anything for your birthday," you mumbled.

"Get me anything?" Rook cocked his head to the side. "Sweet little trickster, you're all the present I need. You even dressed to match!"

"It...It wasn't my idea!"

"Oh? Was this also not your doing?"
