The fact that all the identified remains except for one are from Erebus, and the only Terror crewman (Peglar) was 130 km from everyone else is really interesting. Was Crozier doing something? Did the two crews split up? Some sort of disagreement between their captains? Makes you wonder...

The marble sculpture shows three nude male figures aboard a ship in rough waters.One figure is in the water next to the ship, while another sea creature is visible beneath the waves.

The ship depicted is an ancient Roman trading vessel, notable for its use of a spritsail (a square sail supported by a diagonal spar). This depiction is one of the earliest and clearest visual evidences of the use of the spritsail in antiquity.

Have to add that this is not from Denmark, even though it is in the collections of the NCG, but was likely found in Ostia, Italy, in the area around the ancient port of Rome. The name being given as the "Copenhagen Sarcophagus" is a little misleading, as the Romans never made it this far north, and it isn't called that in the collections database.

Hi Official Raccoon Scientist!

Having been nicknamed "The Raccoon" in High School (for eating the leftovers of everyone's lunches bc I was ravenous and a developing girl headed for almost 6 ft tall), I have adopted the little critters as official cousins. This leads me to ask:

Are there any non-profits that specifically target raccoons, either rehab, conservation, rescue, or research, that you can recommend donating to? I live in Scandinavia, and we do not have any local organisations like that (due to a sad general state of not having raccoons), but I really want to find a way to give a little hand to my masked brethren.

Absolutely. I would really recommend donating to Exotic Pet Wonderland Animal Sanctuary. While they also work with animals like foxes, bobcats, coyotes, etc, they specialize in raccoons. All of the animals at the sanctuary were at one point pets and can never go back to the wild. I used to be the assistant director, but resigned to focus on my research. But I highly recommend them! Additionally, there is also the Nature Conscious Tourism Initiative. That is my own nonprofit and all of the funds there go directly to pygmy raccoon conservation in the form of paying for medical care of rescued raccoons and stuff like food until they can be released. Also, it's gonna pay for raccoon/coati crossing signs in locations where they are frequently found as roadkill.

Having previously worked with Very Old Machines, when I saw the pastry, I immediately went "ah yes, the sacrifice. the sacrifice to make the gears go whirrrrr. the sacrifice chosen especially by the machine after many attempts with other foodstuffs."

It being a pillow just makes me think that the music machine needs a comfort blanky in order to play, which, yeah, I've seen that before, too 😂
