part one.

magdalena da costa—the quintessential socialite rich kid. born into old money, the da costa’s have had their hands in far too many industries to count, making them one of the most prestigious families in new york. maggie had only ever known a life surrounded by fellow one-percenters with nothing being too good—or too expensive—for the only child of the da costas. where kids had silvers spoons, maggie had the entire cabinet all to herself.

and, fine, maybe the influence got to her head but could anyone blame her? disaffected, neglectful parents and a free reign to a limitless bank account would do that to a girl. besides, what are penthouses for if not to throw parties in?

her parents had other ideas, though. when it came time for maggie to step into the family business(es), their last name and a hefty donation to the school landed her a spot in columbia. it all went according to plan with the degree practically printed the day she was born.

what nobody counted on was maggie failing just about every class to blow her parent’s money and spending her time partying into the early hours. being forced to drop out in good standing was a surprising, yet inevitable decision.

locked away in in fifty-story skyscrapers only made the fall that much harder.

part two.

magdalena da costa was screwed. as hard as she tried to hide it, the news spread across new york and eventually reached her parents. it didn’t look good for the family image to have their heir fuck up as badly as she had.

their course of action? cut off her funds and write off the inheritance. a kid like her couldn’t be tied to a family as important as them.

with what little she had left, maggie tried desperately to maintain the lifestyle and her reputation as if nothing changed. nights out to michelin restaurants, vacations in europe, vintage shoes—it all came at a cost and maggie soon found her bank account fall into the negatives.

her friends entertained her for a time, but when she stopped being able to pay back the money she had “borrowed” and outfits mysteriously went missing when she was around, they stopped returning her calls. to add insult to injury, her always devoted boyfriend had ghosted her altogether.

with nowhere else to turn, maggie mustered up what little she had and left her penthouse high-rise with her tail tucked in between her legs.

part three.

magdalena da costa—ironic that the only thing she has left to her name is, well, just that.

desperate to keep up appearances, maggie has taken to scraping by on little to nothing and mooching off unsuspecting victims "friends". the few that don't know better, at least. the hotel she's been staying at is slowly draining her savings and she's been quietly selling off the wardrobe she'd spent her life building.

but, maggie is nothing if not an optimist. even if she might not have a plan to get back into her parents' good graces, she's convinced that they'll eventually write her back into the inheritance.

until then, she'll gladly settle for ramen dinners and dollar store toothpaste if it means that she'll get back sunday brunches in fifth ave with her old friends. and, what's a bit of sucking up to the right people? maggie's flown coach before—she’s been through so much worse.
