Cormac McCarthy Tells Dad Jokes
âStop me if youâve heard this one,â
says Cormac McCarthy to his son.
âWe burn to ash when the sun explodes,
we blow like pollen across the cosmos
âwait, just kidding, thatâs not how it goes.â
âKnock knock, whoâs there,
    itâs the end of man,
and womanâs there too, with a frying pan.
She hits the man with that pan of hers
and stokes his bones among the embers.â
âNo no, Iâm yanking your chain.
What I meant wasâlimitless pain.
    in a sharp rain.â
âGotcher nose,â McCarthy goes,
his breath a host of blackened rose.
âWhy did the chicken cross the road?
Why did it peck a poison toad?
And how did it get beheaded like that,
a sacrifice to the boldest rat?â Â Â
âRiddle me this,â McCarthy says now,
âand see if you can tell me how
we each hope to direct the prow
of fate when itâs just a big mistake,
misfortune, misapprehension?
Tomorrow doesnât mean much to you,
but it canât mean anything anyway.
And you look at me with surprise?â
âNone,â replies McCarthyâs boy.
âBut is it OK if I play outside?â
