A GRIMACE CROSSED his features as subtle as the moon’s travel, a sight that resided in memory only. though he’d heard the prince’s call, in the heat of battle it was formidable yet to decipher its origin location. the whispers of magic in the air, the clashing of blades upon armor and all the voices mingling with each other created nothing but a cacophony of sound in the dark prison of his mind. his new found talent was seeking the sound of his target and focusing upon it, he’d far from mastered this technique, for it hadn’t long since dusk turned to night forever.

QUICK BUT CAUTIOUS steps led him toward what he believed to be noctis’ voice. the energy gathered in the palms of his hands was burning already, though quickly sputtered out as he stumbled on some loose rubble underfoot. little more than a hiss fell from his lips in reaction to the stinging as he fell to his knees.

GLADIO’S BELLOW SOUNDED so far off, but clear as day with the magnitude of his distress. another strangled cry could be heard following, but originated from a point high above. a crackle of energy that incited such a vivid image of bright blue lightning in ignis’ mind all but made his heart stop. he’d made a grave miscalculation, exacerbated by the delay caused by his unexpected fall. his whole body froze with tension despite the screaming instinct to run.

OR PERHAPS IT was the collision, the force of a blade piercing his chest that left him excruciatingly immobile. paralyzed by pain upon impact, hardly did he feel anything else as he hit the ground again. all that could be heard now through the ringing in his ears was the pitch of noctis’ anguished sobs. oh no, no no no no NOOOOOO !! IGNIS NO !! i’m … sorry … i’m so sorry !!

A QUIVERING HAND raised, searching for the arms that now held him so delicately. as tightly as his waning strength would allow, ignis clung to that arm with a feeble smile ever present upon his pale features.

❛ IT WOULD seem i’ve … made a rather critical error. i b — beg you not … to take the blame for this, for it is no one’s but my own. this is … unexpected to say the least, but you must keep going, as i know you will. ❜

the heartless on this world were many, along with other monsters native to it, but, luckily, she hadn’t had to fight alone. kairi couldn’t stop her grin as she turned towards him, nodding a few times. ❛ nice moves! ❜ not that she was any kind of expert.

despite most of his focus being on the creatures, he does have a moment to note she’s got a skill of her own, and swinging that blade seemed almost second nature. noctis spares her a nod of both approval and acknowledgement, chuckling a response.

all night long, outlines of faces concur like visions. faces, familiar or not, that merge to one and, before it calls, noctis awakes. the wind leans this way and that, and he concludes you don’t get through a bad dream by sleeping again. and he must’ve been too loud when scrambling on his feet, out of the tent and into a wilderness he most surely doesn’t recognize. if the dark didn’t scare him, prompto’s voice almost did.
