Thinking about the first time we see Billy get out of the Camaro in S2 versus the last time we see Billy get out of the Camaro in S3.
In S2, Billy's stepping out of his Camaro, literally. His foot lands with the toe of his boot pointed forward in the direction he's about to go. Even with his foot firmly planted, there's the suggestion of movement, which follows through when his other leg swings out fully to step out of the car. He stands on his own, and once he closes the car door, keeps himself squared up next to his car as he takes in Hawkins before walking away. The imagery here revolves around Billy still being able-bodied, standing on his own two feet, and with the ability to walk out. In this moment, Billy is only projecting an image that he has agency over his body and himself, even when this is not the case. For now, his loud persona is in tact, and he gives off the impression that he's in control as he arrives, foot forward. In S3, Billy is possessed by the Mind Flayer. His body is now fully taken over to the point where his actions are all that of the Mind Flayer and against Billy's will. This is exemplified in the way he gets out of the car. He's not landing on his feet to stand. He's literally falling onto the pavement with his hand bracing himself as he crawls out. There's no more projected loud image. There's no more pretending that he's got control over his life. There's just Billy, with body and mind broken, possessed by the Mind Flayer. And the Mind Flayer has been using Billy's body past the breaking point. We see it in the way Billy is fighting through pain to get up, stand on his two feet, and move his body as the Mind Flayer directs it. He's not walking out of this. He's crawling out. And it's forced by the Mind Flayer.
We also see these same ideas in the presentation of the Camaro. The Camaro is always strongly associated with Billy. It's his car, and his car is his ticket out of Hawkins and away from the abuse he faces from Neil (read more here). In that previously linked post, I talk about how the Mind Flayer initially attacks Billy's Camaro in the first episode of S3 so he crashes his car. Once he crashes the car, it's not functional. The car accident left Billy stranded to a fate (a possession that parallels with Karen's predatory intent onto Billy, read more here) that made certain he could never leave. Thus, the dream of ever escaping died when his Camaro could no longer run.
The same is true in this instance. In S2, both Billy and the Camaro are still in motion. Billy can still drive his Camaro, albeit only in Hawkins. But he can still find temporary escape from Neil with his car. In S3, Billy's body is broken and so, too, is the Camaro. But the Camaro isn't just unable to run. It is totaled to the point where Billy is trapped inside the car and cannot get out by using the interior car handle. Instead, Billy has to reach his arm out and use the exterior handle of the car door to get it open so he can crawl out. The implications there being that Billy is trapped from the inside, with the Mind Flayer having taken over his body.
The other aspect of this that I think is important to note is that these visuals of Billy are visuals of his body parts, not himself. The very, very first image of Billy is a body part, not the person. The very last image of Billy getting out of the Camaro is a body part, not the person. I talk regularly about how Billy is constantly sexualized by others, and there's implications of that when Billy emerges from the Camaro in S2 (read more here). The narrative agenda of that scene (and subsequent scenes throughout the series) sets up Billy as an object, not a person. And objectification/sexualization is the dismantling of humanity and personhood. It's easier to do when the visuals and implications only focus on body parts. It's visually ripping away Billy's agency and personhood and making it easier to sexualize him.
But when Billy crawls out of the Camaro for the last time in S3, there's another implication of removing agency and personhood going on. The camera still only shows us Billy's hand crawling out of the Camaro. But this moment isn't about sexualizing Billy. This moment is about Billy, who is possessed/assaulted, still just being viewed as a body part. He's not being presented as a person; he's just a body part, and that visual scene sent up intentionally disconnects the brutally of possession/assault. His agency has already been gone for a long time. But visually, this point continues to remove Billy/his agency/personhood on top of the possession/assault.
