He glared at her, fully expecting her to accept his deal. But she didn't, and when that realization hit him, his triumphant expression fell in total shock.
Had she actually just said all that…? After everything, was she still actually refusing to tell him anything?? She actually managed to stun him silent. For a few unnaturally-long seconds, there was a pause where he just… stared at her. The words replaying in his head. And then--
"WHAT!?!!?
Are you serious!??!"
Ratchet barely thought about him!?! Ridiculous!! As if that wretched rat wasn't kept up at night worrying about his next scheme! His hands clenched, eyes widening in absolute offense. And even now… after all this, she STILL wasn't going to tell him anything either!? She was content to just rot in that cage?!
And wait a minute— did she just call him pathetic!?!!
The gears began spinning rapidly in his head. And if one looked closely they may have seen a few sparks. Somewhere down the hall, Lawrence felt the closest he ever got to happiness, because judging by how long the shrieks had been echoing, he knew Nefarious must have been dangerously close to glitching.
"PATHETIC!?!?!!?!?"
"OKAY! YOU KNOW WHAT!? FINE! If you're not going to tell me anything, then your stay here is about to get a LOT more uncomfortable!!" It's not like he could kill her, of course. Not if he wanted to use her as bait when Ratchet finally arrived, but at this point, he was far too irritated to do anything but spite her.
"YOU JUST LOST PILLOW PRIVELEGES!!! AND HEY, I MIGHT AS WELL LOWER THE TEMPERATURE IN HERE WHILE I'M AT IT!! IT'S NOT LIKE ANYONE BUT YOU WILL CARE! OH, AND I AM SO TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF WHEN I LEAVE!!-- UGH!!! I go through all the trouble of kidnapping and interrogating you, AND THIS IS WHAT I GET!? YOU ARE THE WORST!!!!!"
Nefarious's shriek had her immediately clasped her hands over her ears protectively. She might have regretted her words had they not brought Meredith the immense satisfaction of successfully taking a stab at the robot's ego.
"If I have to trade a pillow, light, and warmth in exchange of your absence that's an upgrade in my book!" she cried back.
*** She shivered in her cell. Of course, pushing her captor's buttons would yield such results. He'd made good on his final threats: lights off, temperature lowered, and indeed, no pillow or semblance of comforts. Only steel and laser grids surrounded her. Still, there was a blissful silence to it all.
And silence, granted her time to think on an escape... when the worry of Ratchet yelling at her once again for landing herself into a new dangerous situation didn't distract her. Elders, grant her grace.
Okay, ship, ship, ship... an escape pod would logically be her best way out. The only question was where and how. Robots patrolled her area in a 15 minute cycle. Another two were stationned permanently in front of her cell. Any movement drew their attention, Meredith concluded they likely used heat sensors to monitor her. After days of analyzing and reassessing, she knew an escape from within this cell was impossible. She needed to find a way to scout the area without drawing suspicion.
The idea came to mind instantly.
It wouldn't be a pleasant one.
But, it was her only way.
Meredith inwardly groaned, she was going to have to make Nefarious believe he'd successfully withered her defenses down.
"Hey!" she called to one of the guards. She sighed, knowing a humiliation ritual was awaiting, "Take me to your leader, I... I'm ready to talk."
The Captain was grateful he got a reaction like that out of her, at least someone around here thought he was funny. Finding himself in charge of anyone was still strange and he found people acting like her did help keep him grounded, it felt good to be around her.
"Do you remember when we talked about someone flooding everybody's inboxes when you first met Sasha a few days back?"
Ratchet would take a moment to stop his own chuckling before he continued on.
"I was going to try to slip away to handle that and hopefully get back before anybody noticed I was gone. Since I'm heading to a museum I thought you might like to come, get you more up to speed on history in this dimension since you've been gone, correct anything wrong they say about me in the exhibits."
"If you believe it to be important, then, sure, I'll accompany you," Meredith shrugged, feeling neutral over the proposition. In her mind, she already had everything she needed to know: Tachyon was still alive, he was a threat, he needed to die. Simple as. The rest wasn't her business as far as she was concerned.
"Though I am curious as to why you feel the need to correct any possible misinformation along the way. Are you concerned about my impressions of your reputation and person?"
Ratchet appeared sheepish as he avoided eye contact with an uneasy smile on his face. "Uh- I'm sorry we broke into your home... and tried to rob you... and threatened your friends," he began to apologize. At his side, Clank nudges him with a glower (clearly, they had discussed this beforehand...) Arms would cross as Ratchet finishes, "And for all of the damage to your defenses." Clank seemed appeased by this, then adding, "We will endeavor to help you in the repairs." However, Ratchet (trying to impress the girl, after all) would add in one more little comment as he feigns confidence. "But, you have to admit... we did a pretty good job, right?" A joke to ease any possible tension, but also for an attempt to note the efforts the duo had done to even manage such a task. / to talwyn for during tod! i was inspired by that ooc post of yours hehe
@veldinstar
When Clank (and Ratchet) had pulled Talwyn aside just as she was about to board her ship to leave Ardolis, the stern look on the little robot's features towards his companion amusingly perplexed the Markazian. By all accounts, their mission here had been successful. It was only when the Lombax spoke that it clicked for her.
Now, this--this was good.
She didn't even bother trying to hide the smirk on her face when she crossed her arms and listened silently.
But, instead of addressing Ratchet directly, Talwyn lowered herself to Clank's level, deciding to ignore that final cocky little addition of his, and solely address the robot:
"I accept your apology Clank. By the look of things, you two seemed to have valid motives behind your actions, but I'll gladly accept the help fix up the place all the same. In a way, it kinda showed that my father's defenses needed some upgrading, so, it's not all bad."
"As for you though," her tone shifted when her attention turned back to Ratchet. Not that she was angry with him, but she remembered a thing or two of her father's writings--even separated from his race, Ratchet sported that infamous Lombax arrogance. It was amusing to say the least, but she knew she had to stomp it just a bit before it got too unbearable.
"Next time you want to invite yourself into a girl's house, try knocking first."
She gave him a playful wink and smiled before joining the antsy warbots that were waiting on her for lift off.
That Lombax was lucky he was cute.

It’s funny how Kaden wanted a lot of kids while Meredith was only open to a modest amount. Well, it’s only funny when you take into account what they thought "a lot of kids" meant for them.
Meredith, who’s the 5th child of 14: "I only want 4-5 kids, I hope you’re not disappointed 😔"
Kaden, who’s a single child, praying she’d agree to 3 at best: 😀
The way Ratchet+Clank met Talwyn is so wild, like, I hope Tal never let's them off the hook for breaking into her house to rob her (take the Lombax artifact they thought she had), threaten to blow up Cronk and Zephyr, destroy her defenses and carve holes into her walls.
And, after all of that, those two bozos make 3 new friends and she trusts them to lock up after her.
This woman is insane, how could you not simply fall in love?
[OPEN to Ratchet(s)] -- I guess? because I had no outlet and I kind of realized this might be too much for an inbox. So, like, this is open for responses/one-shots, but it's its own drabble in a way too.
"Here, I made this for you," Meredith slided what appeared to be a handmade brochure across the table. There was a light twinkle in her eyes as she looked at her son expectantly like she was proud of herself. "Now, before you say anything, I'm asking you to hear me out."
"I know you're... averse to having these kinds of discussions with me--to which I understand, no worries, but I don't trust outworlders, or, or even I.R.I.S. for that matter, to provide actual, reliable information--I'm sorry, I'm rambling," Meredith caught herself, and took a breath, dialing her own motherly instincts down and presenting a more objective and 'professional' front... As much as a slightly concerned mother could anyway.
"My point is: what reliable sources there are were probably either destroyed or written in standard Fastonian. I want you to understand your own body, because, well, you're a Lombax. Not a Cazar, a Fongoid, Markazian, or what not, and sure, some things across the galaxies might share similarities, but you can't rely on that for explanations on behaviours that might seem strange to you, especially if they're completely mundane. Understanding the signals your body sends you will make you go the distance that instinct alone can't." She moved in closer then, sifting through the pages of the brochure in her on-going demonstration.
"Things like: why do your ears feel so hot at this time of the month? Why is your tail behaving like this, or what's up when you suddenly feel like your sense of smell is in overdrive? So, because that kind of info isn't readily out there, and because I know you won't ask me yourself, well, I figured this could you out," she said, pointing back to the brochure.
"Of course, each Lombax is unique, so I focused it on more common occurences, though I did make sure to include specificities related to what kind of Lombax you are, and what kind me and your father are because that's relevant, you are mixed after all, as well as exceptions and uncommon behaviours that are actually completely fine, and some little red or yellow flags to look out for, so there!"
"Give it a glance, ok?"
I don't have a mother's day drabble in me, so here's a little headcanon instead:
Meredith didn't go on leave until much later in her pregnancy. That means she spent a lot of her time active in air fields, shipyards--anything that had to do with her work in the praetorian airforce. As a result, the little Ratchet growing inside her very often had the ambient sounds of ships buzzing around him. Therefore, before he was even born, those were sounds he subconsciously absorbed in association to familiarity and safety. Ie: it's no wonder he felt naturally drawn to them.
His hands gripped his chair tightly, squirming, a hitch in his uneven breath: "I swear, you're gonna be the death of me."
(warning: 18+ drabble ; smut ahead)

I’ve been quiet lately… that’s mostly because of my latest contract (working on N/inja T/urtles omg) and I’m in the process of moving out to my forever home!
It’s gonna take some time for me to settle and unpack, but I lurk occasionally and I’m excited for my things still! I’ve just been too busy to focus on RP lately.
For that quick moment, Alister grieved her hands that pulled away from him — only for her arms to wrap around him in an unexpected embrace. There was very little hesitation to hold her back just as tightly, yet was tender as to not hurt her. Never did he wish to let her go.
Living in exile for so many years had left him in regrettable solitude with guilt consuming his every thought. He was certainly not proud of what he had done in his attempts to fix things, making his once prideful self now lost to his shame. It had made him all the more lonelier. She doesn't have to say it — he can tell she had been lonely, too.
❝I'm here,❞ he whispers delicately against her, his face nestled against her hair. ❝For as long as you wish, I am here. I have missed you more than you could ever know.❞ This could very well be the wrong thing to say, but his heart overwhelmed him.
Emotions were already fragile, but something in her cracked at his soft words. Meredith found herself leaning further into their tight embrace as her vision blurred with tears she could no longer hold back. Whatever strength had kept her composure all this time had been stripped away, piece by piece, by a tenderness that absence had made foreign. And in that moment, she mourned this feeling that had been stolen from her.
Perhaps that was why she didn't bother stifling the sobs that followed. How badly she had suppressed her deep longing to be held, caressed, to bask in the loving warmth of another.
Don't let go.
Please, don't let me go.
For a half second he wondered how the other Lombax even knew about his cybernetic eye since, while his voice modulation was now completely shut off, he had kept his helmet on and his visor completely opaque. Then remembering that before being captured and dragged not only from Polaris but out of the dimension entirely he did not exactly keep a low profile.
That was not even considering the factors unique to their situation or rather their relationship. Time for all of that would have to wait for later. The thought of the three of them coming together for a talk about all of that filled him with something that he could not put into words, a big unknown which made him feel completely hollow.
Filling himself by focusing on the task at hand he switched through his various high powered vision modes. Swiftly Ratchet put one of his hands up and over the other's mouth to prevent them from making any more noise. A large weapon forming within the grip of his free hand he hoped the message loud and clear.
Receive the message he did. Kaden nodded sternly while a hand hovered over his holster. They'd have to fight their way through: for two battled-trained Lombaxes, the old Keeper didn't doubt their chances.
He signalled a simple plan to Ratchet with a hand. He'd charge in first, and the younger would follow. Kaden readied a cryo-mine in his grip and moved forward. Before Tachyon's forces could register his presence, the mine Kaden had thrown exploded, briefly freezing everyone that was caught in its large radius.
Pulling out a combustor, he started shooting.
Placing his hands behind his back he silently walked alongside the other Lombax. He was still thinking about various things that related to this operation in their own way, along with how they connected to and influenced each other. Which caused there to be long moment before he finally answered back to her.
"Thinking about what to get on next actually, I have a few options, but what I go with could depend on if you're willing to take a short little leave or not."
Giving her a quick look over he tried to piece together if she was working on anything out of the ordinary at the moment but from what little he had to work with could not make a concrete guess. So he decided to nudge things just a little bit.
"If you're worried about skipping work I do know the guy in charge, he can be kinda stubborn, but I think I could convince them to give you some leeway."
Meredith snorted at the insuation of the overseer giving her a hard time over 'skipping work'. As if she recognized him as her superior. Laughable. He was useful to the Lombax only in giving her tasks.
"I'm not worried at all actually," she merely said.
"What did you have in mind?"
I’m realizing slowly just how unhinged Meredith can get under the right conditions haha

Woah. Okay. Well, that's certainly not the reaction he expected.
"... you have serious problems. Have you ever thought about anger management?"
Meredith couldn't help the smile that was held on her lips, pleased with herself that she managed to unnerve her captor.
"When Ratchet gets here, mark my words, he's the one that'll be saving you from me. You'll see what 'serious problems' you'll have invited onto yourself."
The Doctor watched with increasing irritation as Meredith stood with her back facing him, his glare only deepening as she turned and their eyes met. She was far too composed for his liking. As far as he could see, there was hardly a hint of fear in her. Ugh. How irritating.
What was it with these Lombaxes and their utter refusal to cower?!
For a prolonged moment, neither of them spoke. It was his own stubborn pride that kept him locked into place. Though at her words, their one-sided staring contest was almost immediately forgotten. She actually wanted to know what Ratchet had done to earn his hatred? It was so rare that someone actually asked! And a captive audience too? There was no way he was passing this up.
"OH, WHERE TO BEGIN!?!"
"That miserable little furball has only DESTROYED EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WORKED TOWARDS!! LIKE… MULTIPLE TIMES NOW!!!" He seethed. "I'm surprised you didn't know! The rest of the galaxy NEVER SHUTS UP ABOUT IT!!!" His hands clenched into tight fists, frustration running away with him before his gaze snapped back onto her. "But since you apparently need to be caught up… I can tell you all about the time he COMPLETELY BLEW UP MY SPACE STATION—and home, by the way!—AND LEFT ME TO DIE THERE!! PRETTY RUDE, IF YOU ASK ME!!!"
He would just conveniently leave out the part where he kidnapped Clank, attempted to hack into his mind, and tried to re-write the very fabric of Time itself to suit his own whims.
"Or maybe you'd like to hear about the time he ABSOLUTELY DECIMATED MY LIFE'S WORK!! An invention that would have improved the ENTIRE GALAXY!!!" By turning everyone into robots against their will... "—AND FORCED ME TO DRIFT THROUGH SPACE ON AN ASTEROID!! FOR YEARS, APPARENTLY!!… It's a bit tough to keep track of time when you're floating aimlessly through a dark void… Oh! And how could I forget the time he threw a bomb straight at my face!? I DON'T RECOMMEND IT! IT REALLY RUINED MY DAY!! Take your pick! I can go into detail! I REMEMBER IT ALL!!"
He took a moment to brood, quickly pacing back and forth in front of her cell before his eyes flicked back towards her. He paused, watching Meredith from the corner of his eye.
"...But you know what's really weird? A lombax, of all things, working at the same garage of the only other lombax known to exist in this dimension! And one that didn't even recognize me!" He leaned in closer to her cell, watching her like she was a bird trapped in a cage. His eyes narrowed, no longer trying to hide his suspicion. "Falling for that whole 'nice guy' act was one thing, but when that radio broadcast went off, I thought for sure my cover was blown… and yet you didn't even notice!! You turned it off yourself!!" He laughed harshly. "So I was thinking! Seeing as I'm telling you all about me, how about we get to know each other a little more?! You ask a question, I ask a question... Anything you want to know! That's fair, right? I mean, it's not like you're going anywhere!"
As Nefarious babbled on, barely coherently, all Meredith could do was stare uncomfortably. Of course, she didn’t take his framing of things at face value, but the way he recounted their history was believable enough for her to accept that a version of these events did happen.
It did make her heart sink… not for the robot of course, he should have expired on that space station of his (if what he said was even true), but for her son. Did he ever know a moment of peace in his young life?
When Nefarious shifted his focus back to her, Meredith realized she did an upper hand here. Despite it all, she was still something of a mystery to him. She’d work to keep it that way.
"You’ll have to forgive him. I suppose you don’t occupy Ratchet’s thoughts that same he does yours," she shrugged.
"But, you're right. It was an embarrassing mistake to not greet you with suspicion." That much, she was willing to admit, because: "When I imagined a… big bad 'Doctor Nefarious'… I didn’t expect him to be this, well," she gestured at him with a grimace on her face, "…pathetic?"
"You’ve just told me everything I needed to know about you; I don’t need more answers to conclude you are a deranged maniac who should have been dismantled years ago. I’m just not very keen on sharing personal details about myself to something like you."
