i have a socio-historical theory that the extreme prevalence of assistive garments prior to modernity that was basically wiped out in the american and european midcentury is related to the rise of neoliberal ideas of how your body should “just work” and if it doesnt its because you arent taking responsibility for your own functional physicality, ie, physical exercise and conditioning, orthorexia, “strengthening exercises “ etc. the number of times i have heard people tell me assistive garments and braces and crutches would create “dependency” ie addiction, which is a failure state. one of the best things i did for my relationship to doctors was to get a large dog who has to be walked twice a day. it has been the ONLY thing i have ever said to a doctor that convinced them i wasnt just lying to them for fun about my level of activity. and you know what else? the increased routine exercise DID NOT improve my health. not at all!

when i checked in to the hotel they gave me a free cookie, as is customary at this chain, and she let me know “you can ask for as many as you want” (didn’t tell me this last time) — “but, ehh, we wouldn’t want you to have a tummy full of cookies, would we? tsk tsk”
