Nothing seems more satisfying as a gay man that having tons of fuel for a romantic fantasy with a straight man that will never be true IRL
I think there are several reasons for this. I think fantasies are shaped by our desires, often without mediation of what’s plausible or likely. I think given the fact that in order to maintain ties to the person, a gay person will exercise restraint with signals. This makes this one of the easier crushes to be disciplined with, because the temptation to test the waters with a plausibly deniable, indirect, or even explicit confession of romantic interest is minimised by the predictable outcome that your friendship will be affected.
