Breakdown / Accent / Arc
To thank for the support for our film so far, we are posting some notes on animating originally made for our animation assistants. Breakdown is a very crucial technique of animating. It is a guideline of how every action should be acted out. It involves a thinking process of âhmm, I want my character to move in this way particularly, because of the context/situation/emotion/thought⌠etcâÂ
Last but not least, breakdowns are the playground for animators. If you find these notes useful, also check out our film We Have Plenty. Itâs a 2D animated film created by the students of SCAD and RISD. Please support us on Kickstarter and help usspread the word! We will be back for more notes on animation!Â
Tutorials in the name of our film. Please support us on Kickstarter! I really really believe in our film and our team. Super excited to see it finished!Â

Art Resources!
Hey all you digital artists and art enthusiasts! This is a list of free art resources/tools that might just help you out!
Programs:
Paint Tool SAIÂ - SAI is probably the most popular tool to use for digital art (aside from stuff like Adobe Photoshop). It has a really simple interface and a lot of different features. You can download brushes for this program like water colours and patterned brushes for free from deviantart. It also has the option for layers and lineart/colouring layers! I use this for lineart mainly, but itâs good for colouring as well.
Krita - Krita is another popular tool. Itâs a little like SAI, although I prefer this program for colouring (unless you have a drawing pad, I would recommend doing lineart in SAI and then colouring in Krita). Itâs really simple to use and has a nice interface and a LOT of brushes and effects! This will take a moment to start up though, so give it about 2 - 3 minutes. It also has a palette option so you donât have to go searching for colours!
MyPaint - I havenât personally used MyPaint before, but from what Iâve seen, it has a similar interface as Sai and Krita and is updated regularly, unlike the other two (although they donât need updating really, theyâre great tools!). It has a simple interface and different brush and layer options.
Pyxel Edit - This program is for pixel art and what I use to do my pixel sprites and tilesets. Itâs VERY easy to use and a great program! I highly recommend it for pixel art. Note: the free version is just as good as the premium, so donât worry about that - and no, it does not expire.
Communities:
PaintBerri - PaintBerri is a cute little site made for digital artists in late 2015! Itâs so adorable! This site also allows you to create art online with a tool similar to Sai but not as advanced (last time I had used it anyway). I highly recommend this site!
DeviantArt - Chances are youâve heard of DeviantArt. This is a community not just for digital art but also for games, photography, traditional art, fanfiction and so forth. This has got to be one of the biggest creative community online and is a great way to share art!
Here is a pretty great place to share it too, though a warning: you should always have a claim on your work so that others canât steal it.
Resources:
DesignDoll - WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW THIS PROGRAM HAS HELPED ME. Itâs a program where you can pose a doll for reference and body proportion. ITâS AMAZING AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. You can also download different models and poses for this program!
DragoArt - This is a great resource for beginners or those who arenât feeling confident. It has a bunch of easy tutorials on how to draw pretty much anything. And itâs updated almost every 10 seconds! Even if youâre confident, this is still a good resource to check out.
And thatâs it! Thank you for reading this incredibly long post. Please reblog for your arty followers and feel free to add on anything I missed!
Have a great day (ďžâăŽâ)ďž*:シďžâ§
someone asked me to do an updated coloring tutorial thing so here! Sorry I donât rly have a special way of doing things I kinda just wing it a lot and if u ask me in another week Iâll probably be doing it in a different way.. THIS IS JUST HOW I COLOR it is by no means the right way to do things!!
and also bc ppl ask abt how I lineart alot idk why; I donât actually do lineart, I paint and then I define details with lines which is a kinda lazy way to do things HAHA

Heads up PayPal is changing ToS again
And they are getting even more strict when it comes to not using invoices for charging for Digital Goods.
Whatever Invoices make you uncomfortable or not, you gotta start using them if you want to keep your PayPal and your money. Changes starting this October 19th.
Honestly I donât get why so many artists are so overwhelmed by invoices, takes just a few clicks to set up.Â
And is not only âoh you have to use invoices because PayPal says soâ if you donât use invoices youâre putting yourself at risk of being scammed by an user abusing the buyerâs protection.Â
Since PayPal ainât got no idea of what those $50 you received were for, but the buyer is saying they didnât got anything for the money, PayPal will just side with the buyer.
Iâm seriously begging ppl, start using invoices. Iâm tired of seeing ppl complain their paypal was banned, or is under investigation, or worse, the $100 they got for a very complicated commission, 3 months later get a refund issue.Â
just
start
using
invoices
for your own sake.Â
Here is how you use invoices because I canât keep playing devilâd advocate, yes I would love to help you get your PayPal restored but just this last month I had to help three persons, and they were MORE than aware of this issues.Â
Just protect yourself.Â
Step 1. You login and click here
Step 2. You click create new Invoice. YOU NEVER CLICK REQUEST MONEY, unless you want to risk yourself to get scamer by buyerâs protection exploit and not only lose your money but your paypal account, and any future paypal linked to your irl name.Â
Step 3 You follow this steps
1. Invoice for amount only
2. Ask your client for their PayPal email and put in that field
3. Add a vague description of what youâre doing, something like âCharacter Coloured with Backgroundâ is good enough, and if you need more than 1 character you can type in â2âł where it says amount, or just say â2 charactersâ.
Warning: donât type in âNaruto rawing Sasukeâ. That will get you banned.Â
4. Click send.Â
Optional steps. Create a template, doesnât take more than 10 minutes and it will save you a lot of time for future invoices, you can even click on âitemsâ right next to âcreate invoiceâ and add a list of services you offer such as âcharacter sketchâ âcharacter flatsâ along with a price, so next time you invoice you just add to the invoice from your list of items and you saved yourself some more time.Â
More importantly, you protect yourself from buyerâs protection exploit because if PayPal knows youâre doing digital goods, then you will be allowed that you did in fact created a digital good.Â
Keep PayPal happy, as for right now there are no alternatives to this service, and this is the only source of income for many freelancers.Â
Stay safe.Â
Heads up, all commissioning artists
Trying to draw buildings
yo hereâs a useful tip from your fellow art ho cynellis⌠use google sketchup to create a model of the room/building/town youâre trying to draw⌠then take a screenshot & use it as a reference! Itâs simple & fun!
Sketchup is incredibly helpful. I canât recommend it enough.
Thereâs a 3D model warehouse where you can download all kinds of stuff so you donât have to build everything from scratch.
reblog to save a life
This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.
We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldnât even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.
Hereâs the missing part of this tutorial:
How do you populate your backgrounds?
Well, hereâs the answer:
If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.
The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of âplopsâ the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the personâs relation to their environment.
How do you fix this?
Well, hereâs the simplest solution:
This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when theyâre quickly planning compositions. Itâs simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.
From Blacksad (artist: Juanjo Guarnido)
From Hellboy (Mike Mignola)
Even if your draftsmanship isnât that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside â not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.
Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.
