“Snap there, the freezer is full of leftovers from my kitchen sessions.” 

‘I wondered where all that tupperware came from.’

“I am! Couldn’t stay away for to long, she is absolutely wonderful, even when she’s sicking up on me.”

‘I remember those days. Just wait until she starts pulling hair too.’

“…it doesn’t. I said I’m fine… thank you.” 

‘ ——— Are we ever going to talk about this?’

“It’s not so dreadful when you come to realise that baking soda on my shopping list will most likely not be used for baking. —— Just joking, of course. I’ve left those days behind a long time ago. It already smells amazing, I can’t wait to try them. Please… just Angie is fine.”

‘Just Angie. — Y’know. I’ve had a lot of surreal moments during my career, but Lara Croft telling me to call her ‘just Angie’ might be one of the craziest so far.’ 

“Am I being a dumbass by asking what tamales are?”

‘Not at all. They’re a little like Chilean Humitas, but I didn’t have the ingredients for those. — It’s masa steamed in a banana leaf, then stuffed with different fillings. I’ve gone for bacon in one, cheese and jalapeno in the other. You don’t eat the leaf. It’s mostly used as a plate. Makes them delicious and convenient.’

“Yes please man, that sounds great. Is it gluten free though?”

‘Yes! It’s all banana leaf and masa. Gluten-free corn flour. That’s the beauty of tamales. They’re suitable for all, with the right filling.’

“I’d love that, don’t let me forget that I owe you a breakfast.”

‘That’s not necessary. I always overcook. If anything, you’re doing me a favour by joining.’

“Well high school’s kinda a battleground innit? It’s just plain brutal. Though - did you offer food back then?” 

‘I didn’t offer my lunch as much as it was stolen. — Thankfully, I didn’t have to stay there long. We moved around a lot and eventually, my father opted to homeschool us.’

“Well of course you would say that. You’re incredibly polite. I suppose you’re right though… It’s always better with company” 

‘Is that what I’m most known for? Being incredibly polite? — How underwhelming. It is. Please, join me. Take a tamale. Tell me about your morning so far.’

“Holy shit, those smell amazing, how many am I allowed?” 

‘As many as you like. The first two plates have bacon in, and the third is vegetarian.’

“Sounds yummy, I’ll take some.”

‘They are! Or so I’ve been told. My son never complains at least.’

“Yes please,”

‘Emma! You’re back. How’s the little one?’

“I could never say no to food.”
