“Well, I’ll be damned. I’ll be wondering how long have you been hiding under the beds from me. — Maybe I was simply waiting a hug from you first?”

Jason relaxed back against the sun lounger, taking a long draw from his joint, before he exhaled. Eyes skirted the landscape as he noticed someone walk up behind him. “Say what you want, big has a hell of a eye for views.” 

“Tell me about it,“ Angelina spoke softly, a smile on her face as she wistfully glanced over the horizon. “You don’t see something like that every day. One of the better things about living here.” She approached the lounger, giving Jason a smile, eyes twinkling for a quick second. “Pass it to the left?“

She has never had a filter, she’s got my ass and quick whit. It’s like it’s the universal karma where I get exactly what I gave growing up. I’ve thought about it but I think pretty much fucked myself over in the eyes of the court. I was 22 and an alcoholic when I had Lucy. I put her up for adoption and my brother adopted her. A few years later, I got clean and had to get lawyers and legal teams to help me get her back. I’m not sure any adoption agency would pick me as a suitable parent when made such a mess of my first borns first couple of years. The only people who can find ways around that are the ones with enough money to get people to turn a blind eye and I’m not quite there yet. 

“You know, I see a lot of myself in you, especially now that you’ve told me about the troubles with the court. When Maddox came into my life, I was not ready to be a mother, not by a long shot. I was drunk almost every other night, more often than not complimenting alcohol with other substances. I am not proud of that part of my life, but it’s there and I have learned to accept it. However, children can change the way you look at yourself and your life in an instant. I’ve met him, and he stole my heart. I cleaned up my act, got myself back on my own two feet... and, well, the rest is history. — If you’d ever consider it and need a referral, I’d be glad to help. I always believe that we should try to focus on the present and future instead of putting too much attention on the past. You are not the person you were when you were twenty-two. Just like I’m not the person I was when I was that age. People change, they grow... and any adoption agencies should either accept that fact or be introduced to one angry mother of six.“

My kid turned nine this week and it’s going me all kind of fucked up. I feel so old! I even told her I was feeling old and she had the audacity to say, “You’re not getting any younger mom, you promised me a brother or sister one day and you’re running out of time.” Okay Lucy, thank you for making feel sooo much better about this whole aging thing. I truly feel so much better after that chat. Not. Anyone know of any good sperm banks I can check out? I should probably stick to quality candidates and not the college guys who sell sperm to get beer money for the weekend. “Sometimes... if not most of the time, children don’t have any filter and say what’s on their mind. It can be the greatest or the most hurtful thing, depending on the situation. I can completely relate to you getting old, however. I was twenty-seven when I adopted Maddox. At that point, I have already prepared myself to be a childless and broken girl who never came out of her ‘bad girl’ stage, but... yeah, time changes everything. Children change everything, too. It’s never too late to be a mother again. Have you ever considered adopting? If not, fostering is also an option.”

‘Always a good thing to avoid, especially in a house as expensive as this. I dread to think how much it would cost to clean the carpets. Breakfast tamales for one Angelina Jolie coming right up.’

“It’s not so dreadful when you come to realise that baking soda on my shopping list will most likely not be used for baking. —— Just joking, of course. I’ve left those days behind a long time ago. It already smells amazing, I can’t wait to try them. Please... just Angie is fine.”

‘Morning.           I’m making breakfast tamales. Want some?’

“Not even joking here — I think I could kill somebody for home made breakfast tamales right now. If you have some to spare, we’ll all avoid a whole lot of bloodshed.“

‘Can’t stop, won’t stop. The praise is nothing if not deserved. Your head is just gonna have to get used to it.’ Grin widened and Zoe shrugged. Facts were facts. Angelina was, in her opinion, Hollywood royalty. No one else would convince the woman otherwise. ‘Maddox has a crush on me?’ Eyes widened slightly at the statement. ‘That’s adorable. I love him. I don’t agree with him. Clearly his mom is the coolest and most ‘dope’ human person in the world, but I still love him nonetheless. Make sure ya tell him.’ 

“I guess I’ll have to start buying bigger hats then,“ Angelina let out a burst of laugher before fondly shaking her head. “You should see his old bedroom walls, daring. He has posters with your face on them all over the place. It’s kind of adorable, actually. Don’t think he ever had a celebrity crush that big. I will tell him that I’ve actually met you and he’s gonna be begging me to not say a word about it, but... it’s kind of too late now. Will let him know that you love him back and I think he might end up forgetting to study. I might have to ask you to send him a video message, encouraging him to get ready for the exams.“

‘Oh, shit. Someone better catch me because I’m about to pass the fuck out.           Did Angelina Jolie, queen of everything, really just refer to me as royalty? Best day ever.’

“Queen of everything? Careful, Zoe, darling, you’re gonna blow my head up and I won’t fit through the doors anymore,“ Angelina let out a gentle laugh, before shaking her head in a fond manner. “But you’d be correct, yes. I did say that. Not only does Maddox have a massive crush on you, I agree with him one hundred percent when he says that you might as well be the coolest and the most ‘dope’ human person in the world.“
