It was my first Valentine’s Day since arriving in Kogyoku, and, as per usual, I headed toward Prince Kagari as I carried a batch of dorayaki.

Kagari:  “It’s delicious.”

Emma: “Thank you

In one of the guest rooms of the Ruby Castle, Prince Kagari sat quietly, munching away at the dorayaki without a care in the world.

(Watching him eat like that is oddly satisfying.)

Kagari:  “But… it’s sweeter than usual.”

Emma: “That’s because I mixed chocolate into the batter today—it’s a chocolate dorayaki.”

Kagari: “You made it yourself, Princess?”

Emma: “Yes. I put a lot of effort into it.”

Kagari: “……”

Prince Kagari paused for a moment and began staring intently at the chocolate dorayaki.

He looked at it from all angles—front, back, and the corners—his emerald eyes scanning every part of the dorayaki.

Emma: “Is something wrong?”

Kagari: “I can see how much thought you put into it, Princess. Is today some kind of special day?”

Emma: “It’s Valentine’s Day.”

Kagari: “…Valentine’s Day?”

(Wait, that reaction…)

Emma: “Does Kogyoku not have a Valentine’s Day tradition?”

Kagari: “I’ve heard of it, but it’s not a big event here.”

Kagari: “At most, people might exchange sweets among their family— but nothing grand.”

(So it’s not a major event here like it is in Rhodolite…)

Emma: “In my country, it’s a day to share sweets with not just family, but close friends and loved ones to express your affection.”

It’s a day to share all forms of love—not just romantic love, but also familial and platonic love.

So the thought of not giving Prince Kagari sweets, after all he’s done for me, never even crossed my mind.

Kagari: “Do you love me?”

Emma: “It’s a bit embarrassing when you put it like that, but I do appreciate everything you’ve done for me.”

Emma: “The dorayaki is my way of saying thank you for everything.”

Kagari: “……I see.”

Kagari: “This is my first time receiving sweets on Valentine’s Day.”

Without changing his expression, Prince Kagari stared at the dorayaki, then resumed munching on it.

His bites were smaller than before—maybe as a sign that he was savoring it.

(If he’s pleased, then I’m happy.)

Munch, munch… the dorayaki steadily disappeared until only one remained in the basket.

Prince Kagari reached for it—but suddenly pulled his hand back and stood up.

Kagari: “Princess, what are your plans for today?”

Emma: “I have the day off.”

Kagari: “I see. Feel free to wander the castle as you like.”

Emma: “Prince Kagari, where are you…?”

Kagari: “I have business to take care of.”

Like a whimsical cat, Prince Kagari casually left the room.

(…I was surprised by how suddenly he left, but I guess that’s just like him.)

What remained in the guest room was the last chocolate dorayaki—and me.

Cat: “Meow…”

Emma: “Huh? Mike No. 1? Hello there.”

Coming in just as Prince Kagari left was a cat he was particularly fond of.

It ambled over to the basket and started scratching at it with its claws.

(Was he drawn in by the smell?)

Emma: “Sorry, this is for Prince Kagari.”

I picked up the basket and placed it inside a cupboard with a door.

(From what Prince Kagari said earlier, I guess it would be okay to spend some free time in the castle.)

Emma: “Mike No.1, since you’re here, want to play with me?”

Cat: “...Meow.”

Emma: “Really? Thank you.”

I petted Mike No.1 as he rubbed against my feet, and he began purring contentedly.

(It would feel lonely to just head home, so maybe I’ll take him up on his offer and stay a little longer.)

While fluffing up Mike No. 1, I lost track of time. Before I knew it, the sun was beginning to set.

(I should probably head back soon.)

Mike No. 1, seemingly satisfied, trotted off, and I returned the basket from the cupboard to the table.

(I should probably leave a note for Prince Kagari before heading back. I wonder if there’s something to write with...)

???: “Leaving already, Princess?”

Emma: “…!?”

I jumped at the sudden breath against my ear.

Prince Kagari, who had silently snuck up behind me, walked to the table as if nothing had happened.

Kagari: “That was a nice reaction; though, it would have been even better if you’d noticed me three steps earlier.”

Emma: “W-Welcome back, Prince Kagari. Um… what’s all that?”

Though he had left empty-handed, Prince Kagari arms were now full of paper bags.

As he set them on the table, they lost balance and spilled open.

Emma: “...Sweets?”

Manju, rakugan, nerikiri, sugar candies, mooncakes, sakuramochi—

All kinds of lovely, sakura-shaped treats instantly filled the table with color and charm.

(But no dorayaki? That’s rare…)

Kagari: “They’re all for you, Princess.”

Emma: “Huh?”

Kagari: “…Hm?”

Emma: “You’re giving me sweets…?”

Kagari: “You said that Valentine’s is a day to exchange affection.”

Kagari: “A day for mutual expressions of love… Was I wrong?”

(Wait, could it be… that his “business” earlier was getting me sweets in return?)

Kagari: “I bought everything I thought you’d like.”

Kagari: “Eat as much as you want. Don’t hold back.”

Still stunned, I was guided to the sofa by Prince Kagari.

He sat so close our shoulders brushed, then picked up a sakura-shaped sugar candy with his fingers.

He pressed it gently to my lips, and as I let it touch my tongue, the sweetness spread across my mouth.

Chew.

As I nervously chewed, his long fingers slid across my lips..

Kagari: “How is it?”

Emma: “It’s… delicious.”

Kagari: “Good to hear.”

(…Maybe these sweets are also his way of saying “thank you for everything.”)

All the treats spread across the table felt like they were visibly expressing Prince Kagari’s feelings.

A mix of happiness and a bittersweet emotion I couldn’t quite name began to swell inside me.

Emma: “Thank you.”

Kagari: “Yeah.”

Prince Kagari let go of my lips and reached for the last chocolate dorayaki in the basket.

Then, for some reason, he held it out to me—and waited, mouth slightly open.

(…Is he waiting for me to feed him?)

I tore off a bite-sized piece of the dorayaki and brought it to Prince Kagari’s mouth.

He began to chew—looking even more satisfied than he had been earlier.

Kagari: “Still sweet.”

(The sweets Prince Kagari gave me were sweet too.)

(…Not just the sweets, but everything, even the air, feels sweet somehow…)

His emerald eyes stayed fixed on me. The lingering taste of sugar on my tongue seemed to spread warmth throughout my body.

I averted my gaze and reached for another sakura treat—but the sound of my heartbeat lingered in my ears for a long while after.

Apparently, when I told Darius of Gloria, he, too, was going there for work,

so I found myself excited when he said he would take me.

The moment we stepped foot inside, however, for some reason I was led to the back,

wherein I realized I was not going to be a guest, but rather an assistant at the casino, running the floor.

(Sure, I did say I wanted to see what was inside, but still!)

And the very person who had invited me was apparently working as a dealer in the VIP section.

(Ugh, I can’t rest easy if I don’t voice a complaint now.)

Frustrated, I headed toward the VIP area to do just that, when——

Darius: Victory goes to the banker.

Man in stylish clothes: Drats, I lost again!

Tall man: What’s going on with this table anyway, this is the tenth loss in a row!

I saw the men, pale in the face, leaving, as though they were running away...

which left Darius, an affable smile playing on his lips——

Kate: ...How did you end up with so many chips?

Stacked on the table was an immense amount of chips.

Darius: Here already I see. Did floor duty leave you so bored?

Darius asked without looking my way, but that was beside the point.

(It’s only been an hour, so how did he accumulate so many chips...)

I recalled the conversation between the men from just moments ago, and suspecting that may have something to do with it, I questioned him.

Kate: Don’t tell me you cheated...

When I did so, he giggled in turn——

Darius: There’s a game you can exclusively play here in the VIP area, you see. Any guesses as to what that is?

Kate: What is it?

Darius: ——Baccarat.

(Wait, baccarat, as in that game that became illegal!?)

His smile widened at my reaction as he continued.

Darius: Two cards, each drawn by an imaginary player and the banker, are added together, and the ones digit of the sum closest to nine wins.

D: It’s exactly because of how simple it is that cheating is so frequent. And that goes for both the player and the dealer...

Perhaps unable to hold it in any longer, Darius started laughing, holding his stomach.

Darius: Seeing all those foolish humans at their wit’s end, not even knowing they’ve all but fallen into the palm of my hand,

D: is truly as humiliating as it is funny.

Kate: ...So is this the so-called ‘work’ you were talking about?

Darius: Nope, this is just for fun.

Kate: Then that’s even more reason to stop this. Exploiting when you don’t need to isn’t right.

But Darius didn’t lend a listening ear.

(At this rate someone else will become a victim to this! ...Well, since it’s come to this!)

I put my hand against the table with a bam, meeting his eyes.

Kate: Have a match with me.

He raised his brows at that.

Kate: And if I win, you will stop racking up all this money and return home with me!

After some thought, Darius’ expression seemed to say he thought of something good.

Darius: Okay, count me in.

D: Then if I win then maybe I’ll have you become my exclusive servant for a while?

D: One who acts as a maid to one to let off steam to——and eeeverything in between.

His gentle smile contrasted with his words as he handed the cards over.

Darius: If that’s fine with you, then I’ll have a match with you. I’ll also bet all the chips I’ve earned too.

D: You can be the dealer as well. So it’ll be a match of pure luck, without an ounce of dirty play.

(If I win then I can stop Darius and he will give up his chips. And if I lose I will have to be his servant for a while...)

I set two cards for each of us face-down beside each other, then turned to him.

(But, if there’s no cheating, that means my chance of winning is 50 percent!)

Kate: I will bet on the player.

Darius: Then I the banker.

I slowly turned the cards over.

And the results were——

Darius: Aww, looks like it’s your loss, Kate.

The player’s sum was 18, and the banker 9——Darius’ win.

In contrast to my despair, the man before me had a full smile on his face.

Darius: Which would make you my servant.

He lifted my chin with his finger, making me face up.

Darius: But you have nothing to worry about. Because I’m not such a fool to go and break down Crown’s favorite.

D: That said, I’ll make sure you fulfill every demand of mine. No matter what it is.

Kate: !

He grasped my cheeks, and his face filled my entire vision.

Darius: Having you do things that push your comfort might be fun too.

The hands that were on my cheeks trailed downwards, so his fingers touched the crook of my neck.

Darius: You were the one who challenged me, and agreed to pay the price.

D: So don’t think about running away now, Kate.

Silvio: I've played with all of them so much that I know all their strategies already. Silvio: And anyway... nobody ever plays against me seriously. Silvio: You're a prince. So you won't just be a pushover to try and appease me. Silvio: You'll play for real, right?

Nokto: I'll try.

Silvio: ...Hold on, you never told me you were this good!

Nokto: Well I didn't think you'd be this bad...

Silvio: Shut up!

Nokto: I can give you a free round?

Silvio: No way, that'd be even worse.

Nokto: ...Are you crying?

Silvio: You're seeing things, stupid! Silvio: One more game.

Nokto: Sorry, but it's time for me to go now... Nokto: Why don't you invite your other friends to play with you?

Silvio: ......

Nokto: Don't tell me you don't have any-

Silvio: So what!?

Nokto: ...Nothing.

Silvio: ......

Nokto: I- I guess you can only learn more about games like this through experience. Nokto: If you're ok with it, then I could play with you more while I'm in Benitoite.

Silvio: ...! If you want to play that much, then I guess I'll play with you again.
