Supermarket, Smoking and Relationships
The working world can be a challenging place to be. There are so many opportunities for you to learn, but perhaps not all workplaces are easy. Maybe your job involves a client/ customer, and your boss is eagle-eyed on you to GET IT RIGHT.
After that 9 to 5, you just want to go home and unwind. Maybe you catch up on your hobbies, do some activities, or just do something for that pick-me-up. That is the study for today, and how it changed two people's lives.
<Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You> by Jinushi follows Sasaki, a 40-something-year-old Salaryman who worked in a toxic working environment in Japan. His job involves him dealing with reports and sales with clients. After a long day at work, Sasaki would take the train ride home and stop by his local supermarket to buy some essentials. He would specifically check out at Isle 2, where the cherry and beautiful cashier, Yamada, resides.
On one particular night, Sasaki was doing his routine shopping, but Yamada was nowhere to be seen. Dejected, Sasaki tried to look for a smoking spot where he could smoke safely without disturbing the public.
As he makes his way to the back of the supermarket, he runs into a mysterious woman. Tayama asking Sasaki to join her and smoke together. As they lit up a cigarette, Tayama inquires about Sasaki. Saying that he looks familiar. Thus, a friendship was formed.
As the series carries on, Sasaki and Tayama get to know each other better. Engaging in small talk, discussing their daily work experiences, and enjoying each other's company.
Otsukaresama! (Good job today!)
< Smoking with You > is a series about vibes. Where two characters take a break behind a supermarket during their off hours and get to know each other better. Surviving in the world with the little forms of happiness they can find.
Our main character, Sasaki, is a simple man who found his one slice of happiness through Yamada as his pick-me-up. On that fateful night, he interacted with Tayama for the first time. Sasaki gets to unwind and resolve his many issues. Overcoming his past regrets and gaining a new understanding with Tayama. In return, Yamada feels seen by Sasaki with her set of complexities, having her own form of release through Sasaki.
By these interactions, they find mutual understanding with one another, even though they are generations apart.
The hook of this series is the "secret" that Yamada is Tayama, with little explanation as to why and how the dense Sasaki never caught on. We also get to see that, outside of work. Our characters have little to no social lives. Living on their own with not much to do. For both of them, this interaction they have is the only form of socialising they get.
Their conversations are deeply insightful or silly nothings. Making us, the audience, pry into their private meeting, getting to know them while they get to know each other. As the meetings become more frequent, the bond between Sasaki and Yamada develops. A simple slice of life about two people finding and enjoying each other's presence.
We also get to uncover their inner thoughts and how they wrestle with their own problems. Sasaki is an overly kind man who puts the needs of others above his own, while Yamada puts on facades to hide her true feelings.
It's Not The End of The World
Here are my stray thoughts. < Smoking with You > is about working adults overcoming the mediocrity of daily life. The working world is a boring place. You wake up, go to work, have a lunch break, go home, maybe do some errands, sleep and repeat.
Adding the mundane habit of Sasaki and Yamada meeting in an unflattering place for a smoke break may feel like nothing, but their meeting brings out the best in each other. That certainly says something.
When life is but a routine, the little interactions you make with the people around you might add a little flavour, and it might open the doors to a better relationship with your mutuals. What's so attractive about this series to me and to the newfound fans since the anime brought a resurgence, is how normal it feels.
No special powers, no supernatural elements, no raunchy stuff. Just two ordinary people indulging in a recreational activity and chatting about life. Which may lead to a potential romance. It's so simple, and yet. 62 chapters in. We're not even scratching the surface yet.
The endgame of the series seems to be clear, but it might not be the conclusion we see in typical teen dramas. Because this isn't a teen drama. Sasaki and Yamada are adults, and romance doesn't seem to be their priority yet. Or maybe the author, Jinushi, is going to mess with us.
What I hope < Smoking with You > can testify to is the fact that anime/manga doesn't need some otherworldly hook, nor does it need to be reminiscing about one's teenage years. It can be as simple as smoking behind a supermarket with a total stranger and getting to know each other.
