Ok, so bare with me here cuz this might get a little long as I try to make my point:

I was doing some vanitas body studies, right? and it suddenly occured to me how thick his suit looks. Like, I don’t mean muscle-wise, I mean material wise. It almost looks like some kind of leather. Everyone always sort of figures and assumes it’s his “second skin” and I don’t think that’s “wrong”, but I don’t think it’s entirely “accurate” either.

Take a close look at his outlines. See the second inner line? that’s where I think his actual “skin” is. I think the suit is more his “armor” than anything, and it’s much thicker than we first assumed.

“ok, so what’s your point?” you ask. “he’s still ripped.”

You see the bottom right corner? I super imposed Sora’s atlantica model onto Vanitas’s body as close as I could get it, roughly to scale. He seems pretty scrawny in comparison, right?

But look at that compared to the actual body I drew for vanitas.

suddenly he doesn’t seem as skinny in comparison, does he?

long story short, I don’t think vanitas is actually that much bigger in comparison to the other boys. I think the suit was purposely designed like his helmet and boots: something to make him look bigger and more intimidating.

think about it: 

vanitas is supposed to be darkness incarnate. he’s been abused and brainwashed into a powerful killing machine from the outset, and he’s supposed to be scary and intimidating. So he forms a helmet with a sharp edge to make his face look longer and angular, and shoes to make him just a little bit taller. And what would be the best final touch to complete the look? A form-fitting suit with just enough padding to make his already powerful muscles even bigger. (And don’t mention that he was just “born with those”, because we have to think of the design team and production cost and time for this. Of course they wouldn’t bother creating a whole other model for vanitas for a three second appearance- just look at what they did with Aqua and Terra for the flashbacks, even though that was supposed to be four years prior.)

Now this isn’t to knock on his strength, we all know what a powerful force Vanitas is. What I’m saying is that if he was completely stripped of all those little things used to build him up, he would actually look like the 15 year old boy he’s supposed be. He would fit in almost perfectly with Roxas, and Ven and Sora- bad attitude and all.

“Too bright." 

"Oh. Is that bad?”

“…not this time.”

Braig was more than a little surprised to discover Vanitas… Still around, really. He had definitely expected him to disappear along with Ventus. Then again, Braig had no idea what happened to Ventus anyway. He had his guesses about what happened to Aqua, but for sure the only member of the Keyblader trio that Braig knew the exact fate of was Terra. 

“Didn’t think I’d be seeing you again.” He whispered as he helped Dilan escort Vanitas to the dungeon for temporary holding.

Master Xehanort was right; Vanitas was useless. Inferior to Ven in every way. When he came to, the sight that greeted the raven from beyond his dark visor was bars, which were attached to a door, and the only source of light was shining between them. Not that he cared, it anything the light was bothersome. It only made him hurt. Not knowing what else to do, and with failure fresh in his mind, the knowledge of his Master not being dead, only changed was why Vanitas came to Radiant Garden in the first place. One of the guards, he knew he and his Master had some kind of plan. That Xehanort had taken residence in Terra's body. His Master...despite harboring excessive hatred for the old bastard, the sad truth was Vanitas had no idea what to do with his existence without order or direction.

He was like a helpless animal, and didn't act any better than a violent one.

"Where...the hell is this."

Vanitas seemed calmer, so that was a good sign. 

“Doesn’t mean you have to stay here.” He remarked softly as he finally sat down near Vanitas, but there was still space between the both of them. He looked out at the desolate view, it was so empty here. There was nothing good in this place. 

But Sora would stay in the Graveyard as long as he had to, in order to convince Vanitas to leave this place and come somewhere better, maybe even the islands. 

Sora didn’t even like this place so he could only imagine how Vanitas felt about it, but he wouldn’t bring that up, not yet. He looked over at him as he crossed his legs to get comfortable. “Vanitas….wouldn’t you rather be somewhere else?” 

How many times did Vanitas have to tell the brunette to go away, and leave him alone, before Sora actually listened--.....no, the raven was knee deep in shit when it came to this meddling idiot.

Sora didn’t know how to leave people alone.

It didn’t matter where Vanitas went, those Keyblader Wielders of Light would sense his Unversed the moment any of them began to spawn and would come to any world to take them out.

And he did not want to experience that pain. Not right now. Not the kind he didn’t know when to expect it.

The brunette just wanted Vanitas to have what everyone else had, to have something beyond what he had been created for. The war was over, he could have his own life now. Discover who he was outside of Xehanort’s goals. That was all Sora wanted for him.

He’d even bring the raven back to Destiny Islands, but first he had to get Vanitas to agree. This place….wasn’t a place for anyone to live.

Sora wasn’t leaving the Keyblade Graveyard without Vanitas, so he persisted in searching for him. When he discovered he wasn’t anywhere on the lower ground, Sora opted to search the higher ground, mainly the cliffs. He soon tracked him down overlooking the crossroads where him and his friends had met with the Thirteen Darknesses. That seemed like a lifetime ago and yet it had all happened so recently.

As if he’d ever had good control over his emotions.

“I was born here, idiot.” Though putting aside all of the things Xehanort had done to him in this place...his birth was by far the worst atrocity ever committed against him. If it hadn’t been for his sudden existence. He wasn’t about to disclose that to Sora though, he already wanted to ‘help’ the raven, meddling with things he had no idea about.

He wasn’t about to make the brunette’s ‘Hero Complex’ worse, especially when it was being directed at him.

Despite hating the Keyblade Graveyard though, he couldn’t deny it held significant meaning to him, even if it was bad. He loathed this place, yet felt drawn to it. Vanitas had no explanation for it.

“That outfit looks good on you. But, you’d also look good without the outfit.”

“Wha–is that a banana in your pocket?”

“My keys are in my pocket. Can you get them for me?”

“Help me find the D? I mean, the variable–i-it’s math…”
