This is a post from my old blog, @the-daily-diviner
Scrying is a very fun and accurate way to tap into your divinatory skills. It may seem hard at first, but with practice it becomes something you can do at anytime. For the sake of this post, this will be about scrying with your eyes, and may include a few references to other senses.
There are more ways to scry of course, including seashell scrying, where you hold a conch to your ear and listen for words, but this is more for visual divination. (Expect more on hearing-based divination in the future)
The first step in learning to scry is choosing your medium.
And there are countless things you can use! :)
Here are some popular choices:
I personally enjoy water and black mirror scrying the most, but fire scrying is right up there as well. After some skill development, you will be able to scry in random places, like a public restroom. You can learn to use all sorts of surfaces to scry.
So once youâve got whatever medium you plan to use, find somewhere quiet to sit. I like to dim the lights and get into a darker, more somber atmosphere. Closing your blinds, shutting your door, or sitting in a makeshift tent are all good ways to do this. It also helps you separate this activity from everyday life, which is quite helpful.
If you are familiar with meditation, it is a similar process. You relax your mind, get into a calmer state, and you alter your consciousness slightly. I suggest taking a few deep breathes and then begin scrying, as it makes everything less jumpy.
One thing I find hinders my own ability to see clearly is being anxious or frustrated. So know that you can do this, and that youâre a wonderful diviner. :)
Give yourself a reason for doing this.
Do you want to find something out about the past/present/future? Do you need advice? Are you trying to communicate with someone/something? Make a good sentence describing what youâre looking for and focus on it.
It will make this a lot easier on you if you know what on Earth youâre trying to accomplish ^_^ Writing it out isnât a bad idea either.
Gaze into the surface of your choice and look for symbols or images within it. Allow them to form and try not to create them on your own. They might start blurry, or sharp and vivid. for me, theyâre a bit dream-like images. Hazy.
Sometimes youâll see simple shapes, other times entire events. Some images move, some wonât. It depends on the scryer, and also the medium from what I have gathered.
Once in a while you can taste things, smell things, feel things, and hear things as well. I have also noticed that words dates, etc. also pop into my head when I scry for certain things. Write these down as well as the images you see for your interpretation :)
Youâll go into a trance-like state, so be prepared for that.
I wasnât really expecting it and spent more time scrying than I thought I was going to.
Some other tips I have would be:
Donât panic if you see something that appears to be negative. Sometimes it represents the situation in your life, or another personâs problem. Take this into consideration, and just keep scrying :)
Allow your intuition to guide and direct you. You may not like that a certain thing appears, but your intuition may tell you that it is right. Go with your gut.
If the image changes, you can take the first, or both of them as answers. Sometimes I get alternate answers to questions, most of the time though, the first is correct :)
I say a protective chant right before I actually begin scrying just in case, Something like âI am safe from all harmâ will work just fine as long as you pack some intent behind it ^_^
Donât ask flimsy or uncertain questions. Be confident in what youâre searching for to receive the best answer.
Good questions are direct and to the point.
I like saying things like
âWhat will happen if I do  _____?â
âWhat should I expect from this situation?â
âHow does this situation affect my ability to growâ
Try to avoid wording your questions so that they can be answered with yes or no, since youâll mainly see symbols and the like. It gives deeper answers to more direct and demanding questions in my experience. Â
Write down whatever you see and try to interpret it. Every image is different and personal to you.
Iâve had images make absolutely no sense to me, but be completely clear for the person I was scrying for. Let each symbol resonate with you, and find out what they mean :) Some have spiritual meaning, while some are more sentimentally connected to the problem youâre facing.
After youâre done, you can cleanse whatever you were using as your medium or extinguish any flames etc.
I like to do something mundane to ground myself, since scrying can sometimes take a lot out of me. Drink tea, eat food. Feel normal and non magical for a while.
I like to store my tools with crystals and herbs inside of a black bag. I keep clear quartz, sodalite, and amethyst with my mirrors, cards, and other divinatory supplies, and place fresh herbs like rosemary, mugwort, and lavender in with them :)
I hope this scrying article helps some of you learn more about it, and potentially how to do it! :D
