well, well, well, if it isnât the feelings iâve been trying to avoidÂ
rileymcdanielsâ.
@cathedralofdust
âDickie Bennett is an asshole, and he had it cominâ,â Riley mutters, dabbing at her nose and split lip with her sleeve.
â --câmere,â he swats gently at her hand, propping up her chin with his forefinger. Raylan does little to hide his annoyance, but it isnât directed at her. âThis is where I remind you how yâ harped on at me âbout Dickie--âÂ
likethestoryâ.
@cathedralofdustâ liked the starter call and gets Sam (for Raylan)!Â
Itâs almost cliche. Side of the road, standing beside a broken down car with a steaming engine, and then a stranger approaches.Â
Sam looks up from the open hood, offering an apprehensive smile.Â
âThis must look like some kinda damsel in distress thing, eh?âÂ
Heâs seen stranger than a woman with a broken down car on the side of the road. Running late to the office, his first instinct is to keep going and yet, somehow, he ends up pulling his Towncar in just behind her. His hazards come on and he steps out.
âNow, Iâm sure youâre capable of handlinâ things yourself, but figured you could use an extra set of eyes. People on this road ainât always the kindest about people parked on the side.â Raylan gazes at her from under the shade of his hat brim. âYou all right?âÂ
we closed our eyes and took on the world together -- do you remember?
rileymcdanielsâ.
âSo, between the two of us, Iâm the Southern cliche?âÂ
âA bold statement coming from the man in a cowboy hat, but okay.â
Some of the desiccated corners of her heart are not so brittle anymore. Itâs a realization that she is not ready to touch yet because just the sight of him after all these years has seemingly readjusted every known in her universe. Nothing has changed, but everything is different.
He wears a hat now.
âI like the hat,â she says, and she means it. She wouldnât have said it if she didnât mean it. She used to say and do a lot of things that she didnât mean or even like for politenessâ sake. Sheâs working on it.
She breathes out a laugh. âGuess so, but itâs Lexington.âÂ
Itâs Lexington, because last weekend, a woman flirted with her at a bar and no one thought much of it. Itâs Lexington, and maybe it took a few weeks after moving back, but she can sleep through the night again. Itâs Lexington, because she is forty goddamn years old and she is still haunted by a town that she hasnât seen in half a lifetime.
âDo you want to get some coffee?â she asks. âI was just heading out for some.â
A coffeeshopâs not private, but itâs more private than a courthouse hallway. She already feels flayed alive from exchanging a few words with him. Thereâs a lot of loss between them. And she has never felt particularly inclined to share any part of Raylan that might be vulnerable in any way with anyone. Even if she is now just somebody that he used to know â she doesnât want to share.
Thereâs places he needs to be. People he should be reaching out for contact with: Ava. Aunt Helen. Hell, even Winona. The list is long and he knows why heâs been stationed here in Lexington. Artâs voice already rings in his ear and heâs got FBI breathing down his neck because heâs too good at gunning down the bad guys and maybe thatâs a problem. Thereâs plenty to be done, but Riley likes his hat and he hates it here. Even if itâs just Lexington.Â
She says it in that way that makes him feel like maybe they never got out as far as they wanted.Â
He nods. If nothing else, he gets it. Lexington ainât Harlan. Itâs just too damn close for comfort.
Everything else can take a seat and wait a few.
Raylanâs not going anywhere. Life made sure of that.
âCoffee sounds great.â Casting a long glance down the hallway, he focuses back on her, pivoting on the heel of his boot to reroute the way heâd come from. âI can drive.âÂ
A beat passes, the air heavier and yet somehow he feels like it might just be a little easier to breathe, too.
âYou look good. For beinâ ancient and all.â Itâs a gentle tease, a tiny light looking something like mischief flickering in the hazel of his eyes. âItâs good to see you.âÂ

rileymcdanielsâ.
Itâs not the promise she wants, but itâs good enough. Maybe thereâs a way that weâll get out ends up meaning weâll run away together. But getting out is more than enough. They live in a world where they have to fight and bleed to get anything, but he gives her the promise for free.
But then he asks, and she lets out a garbled laugh.
âI ainât gonna make you ask anything,â she mumbles even as a grin stretches her cheeks. âExcept it seems to me like youâre already askinâ.â
Itâs not like there was a singular moment where everything shifted and suddenly, she wanted to kiss him. It just grew over time, watered by proximity but nurtured by closeness. But its roots go deep enough that the world wouldnât make sense without it.Â
âA while, I guess,â she admits, and her reluctant tone is undermined by how sheâs still half-smiling with a blush creeping up the back of her neck and onto her ears. âWhen we, uh, when we went driving in March, really late that one night. It was a school night. I wanted â I was gonna â but then some people walked by where we were parked, and it was two in the morning, and I⌠you know, didnât.â
She fumbles all over her words like a puppy with ears too big trying to run. Itâs endearing. Itâs something good to hold on to and Raylan makes notes to make Riley McDaniels blush even more and often. He doesnât laugh ( hell, sometimes he ainât sure he knows how ) but he smiles.Â
Thereâs no denying the heavy weight of fates yet undetermined.Â
Maybe theyâll spend forever chasing it.
Raylan prefers to focus on the now. So thatâs what he does. He moves his hand, sliding it along her back, and up so he can cup her cheek. She feels small, but her heart is huge. Gently, his thumb brushes just along the height of her cheekbone and then he tilts her head up, just so. And kisses her.
This time, he lets it linger. This time, he doesnât make it about his anger.Â
âShouldâve just done it. Damn what people wouldâve thought.â He smiles against her lips before drawing back to take in the look on her face. âWe both know I already got somethinâ of a reputation.âÂ
His wink is deliberate and laced with that Devil blessed charm of his.
Sometimes, I think about making this just a Raylan blog. But I love Winona so much and sheâs seen poorly in general fandom eyes.
So, at very least -- Iâll continue to be a Raylan and Winona multimuse. XDÂ
we closed our eyes and took on the world together -- do you remember?
rileymcdanielsâ:
Rileyâs been busy, thatâs why she doesnât know, why she hadnât heard, why she hasnât heard until she hears him. And when she does, her world scatters off of its axis. All of a sudden sheâs seventeen again, and he is the quiet, solid focus in a monsoon of chaos and violence. And all of a sudden again, she is forty years old, and she would swear to it in front of any judge in the courthouse that she heard Raylan Givensâ voice.
There is a very old pain that is gnarled and scarred in the middle of her chest as she slowly turns. And maybe in this hallway thereâs only a handful of people, but she would know him even in a crowded amphitheater. Her mind startles at the signs that he had gotten older, just like she had. The tilt of his shoulders is the same.Â
He stands taller than he used to.
Heâs by himself. And she walks over. Itâs somehow very simple.
âRaylan Givens, as I live and breathe.â
âItâs a mighty small world.â
@cathedralofdust
He can feel her breathing down his neck. Harlanâs always there. Even when he was thousands of miles away and traveling the world looking for crooks to take out, she was there. Sheâs here now, three hours away from Lexington. Setting foot into Kentucky has everything in him twisted up in ways he canât explain. Winona. Harlan. The life he shouldâve left behind ; almost did. Arlo. That hillside gravestone. Boyd Crowder. The mines. Imminent death.
But then thereâs her.
He didnât know sheâd be here. And how could he? She turned into a ghost of his past that he swore some nights mustâve all been a figment of his imagination.Â
He didnât know sheâd be here, but sheâs walking up to him and heâs not running.
âCareful, Riley,â he says all bourbon warm, expression erring on the side of a smile. ( but with that distinct lack of a last name to address her with because did she find someone deserving enough for her? ) Thereâs a thudding in his chest he ignores. In this light, the stark clinical courtroom light, he can see some of those shadows he would see when they were younger. Still; thereâs something about her that brings light into a room. âYouâre soundinâ more like Scarlett OâHara now than you ever did when you were young.â
Raylan doesnât reach out to touch her, thought he instinct is there. Old habits die hard. Instead, he cocks his head, dipping his hat in respect to her. He remembers, distinctly, what her chapstick tasted like all those years ago and what it felt like for her to press her body into his. He remembers how soft she was despite all the hard around her. He remembers where the freckles are on her shoulders, hidden like some far off forgotten stars. He remembers, but he wonât touch her. Not today, not with all this lost life between them.
âReckon Kentucky found a way to rope you back in, too, hn?â

Tag Drop;
Amber Heard in Drive Angry (2011).
rileymcdanielsâ.
She curls as close as she can get to him, so close she can feel his body as he breathes. Itâs trust, and itâs safety, and some of the tension that never releases in her body, not even when she sleeps, eases out of her bones. She shuffles even closer. Her arms are secure around his waist, fingers laced together so itâs not so easy to let go.
She doesnât touch people, but she touches him, and it comes easily to her.Â
âThe only promise I care about,â she says, her voice muffled because her mouth is half-smushed against his shoulder, âis if you promise to leave, too. I will not abandon you.â
Riley thinks about Arlo Givens, and she thinks about the haunted, hunted look in Raylanâs eyes, and the rage flares again. She could kill that old man. Unlike her, Raylanâs never done a damn thing in his life to deserve what he gets.
âWeâre gonna get out of here,â she decides quietly. âI donât know how, but I donât want to die here.â
She says she doesnât wanna die here and he doesnât have the heart to tell her heâs already dead. His daddy picked out a plot of land meant for him and everything. Heâs gonna be buried in these Harlan hills and thatâll be the end of him. Born here, die here. Is there anything else for a man like him?Â
âYou wonât,â he settles with instead. His arms remain around her and itâs a cold shock to a system that always runs hot that she fits right nicely against him. Not puzzle pieces, but two broken bits that happen to merge just right.
Itâs dangerous.
âWeâll get out, Ri.â Raylan draws back without breaking the band of their arms and the press of their bodies. He draws back, drops a kiss on her forehead, and then sighs. âNow, you gonna make me ask how long youâve wanted to kiss me?âÂ
He wants to know because he wants to know. But he wants to keep her thoughts on something outside of Harlanâs grasp. Maybe it canât touch them here.

Thing is, Winonaâs all heart. Always has been. heâs never seen a woman like her; she doesnât just wear her heart on her sleeve, itâs also in her eyes and the way her fingers pass over his jaw. Itâs in the way she teases, teases like theyâre a couple of school kids. winona is all heart, and it makes his own heart squeeze and shrink in his chest.
âOld? Old?â He repeats, eyes widening as though he is hurt and shocked by that. But heâs grinning down at her. his voice drops into that tone that is all for her, intimate and warm and daring. âWhat made yâso mean, Iâd like tâknow. âCause youâre mean as a snake.â But he canât help it, his arms go around her and he pulls her close for a kiss. âMean as the day is long.â
Raylanâs good - no, great - about knowing how to soothe those aches and worries. The monster in the dark lurks at the edges, but itâs nothing compared to the shadows she sees etched across his handsome features. And when he kisses her, when he draws her close and steals her breath like itâs what he was put on this earth to do, she canât help but smile.
âAre we talkinâ about the length of my days or your days? âCause I feel the need to point out your days seem to never end.â She looks up at him, all squinty and sincere, but the truth is the scrutiny sheâd use to nail him with is soft and quiet in the tenderness of this moment.
âLetâs run away, Raylan.â Winona kisses him again, eyes closed like she doesnât wanna see the look in his eyes of turmoil, because she doesnât. âFar, far away. We can have a liâl house and three kids. A dog, too, though I reckon a cat would be easier to handle --â Itâs a dying wish the second she breathes it into existence. And for that, she curls her fingers into his shirt a little tighter.Â
